NEWPORT COAST, CA - Over 50 Nova Masters & Multisports OC members participated in the 2006 Pacific Coast Triathlon. Once again the team had phenominal results both from the veteran triathletes and the newbies. The teams had a total of 14 podium finishes (Top 3). Once again Ian Pyott was the team's top finisher despite being a bit fatigued from racing at the Pacific Grove Triathlon in Monterey the day before and driving back the night before the race. He also continued his reputation as the "Transition Houdini" with a COMBINED transitions time of 2:23 (1:48 + :35). Next closest was Coach Mike with 2:47 (2:02 + :45), and Coach Carl with 3:02 (2:24 + :38). Brandy Bounds was the top female finisher placing 3rd overall and taking the 25-29 age division title. Kristen Thorkelson was the female "Transition Queen" with a 3:12 total (2:19.5 + 52.5). Triathlon rookies to have great races included Andrew Jensen (1:14:15) & Randy Kallick (1:14:33). Those of you who were "Transition Slugs" (taking more than 4:00 total time) should not miss the next transition practice or clinic! OCEANSIDE, CA - Scott Spence and Holly Pack were the top male and female Multisports OC finishers at this first year event which took place at a new location on Camp Pendleton. It was an open ocean swim from ACU-5 - home the "Swift Intruders" Hovercrafts. The surf was BIG and there was a significant northerly current to add to the challenge. Scott Spence, who normally speciallizes in longer distance races, rallied from his traditionally weaker swim to move up to 4th in the 30-34 age group. Holly was the top female age group finisher for the team placing 2nd in 30-34 despite battling a hip issue "a la Floyd Landis", but hopefully without the drugs. Steven Owen placed 3rd in 55-59 and had the fastest swim and run split in his age group. Special congratulations to 1st time triathlon finishers Rob Anthony & Shelby Stanger. Coach Michael Collins took home the "Bonehead Maneuver Award" at the race for locking his keys in the car and sitting in the parking lot for 2-1/2 hours waiting for AAA to arrive. It was a personal record of 6 hours to complete a sprint distance tri that he didn't even start. See photos from the race HERE.
