AVALON, CA – Multisports OC athlete and coach Ian Pyott won the Catalina Island Sprint Triathlon for the fourth consecutive year to become the first 4-time winner of the race. He seems to be on his way to being the next “Buffalo” Bill McDermott who won the Catalina Marathon seven times in a row and an amazing 13 times total.
Although there were significant changes to bike and run course it did not deter Pyott from dominating the field to win by nearly 4 minutes.

COLLINS & SWAIL DEFEND COED TITLE AT MUDDY BUDDY L.A. 2006

SAN DIMAS, CA - Multisports OC Coach Michael Collins teamed up with professional triathlete and USA Waterpolo Olympican Julie Swail to compete at the 2006 Muddy Buddy Ride and Run - Los Angeles event held at Bonelli Park in San Dimas on Oct 29, 2006. The race consists of alternating mountain biking and running with obsticle courses separating the legs. Team mates alternate between the run and bike by just sharing one bike for the event.
The team had the fastest coed time (40:17) and finished 8th overall including the all-male teams despite going several waves back which is a definite disadvatange due to congestion on the course leaving in the 6th wave.
This is the second time Swail & Collins have done the event together and won the coed division, although they were challenged by another 66-75 combined age team and had to come from behind to take the win.
"We had a blast doing it last year and looked forward to returning. Luckily it didn't conflict with Julie's very busy racing schedule although I was concerned with being able to pull my own weight this year since I just did the Chicago Marathon the week before. Last year I did the 3 legs of running and two on the bike, so this year we decided to switch and it worked out well. Julie is a little more tentative on the mountain bike with some many on the course so it worked out well for her to only bike twice since she probably runs just as fast, or even fast since I just did the marathon. We finished the final leg very close together.
The team nearly didn't get to race as Collins got in a car accident on the way to the race and was considering giving his bike to the team in the other car since he ran into the back of their car which had their bike attached (See photo gallery HERE and b sure to read the captions.)
Other Multisports OC members to compete included David B. & Brandy Bounds who either raced under alias names or were missing from the results, and Klim Granovsky and daughter Natasha finished in 55:00.
Performance Chiropractic Doctor Travis Conley also competed, or should we say "participated" in the event with his girlfriend Amanda under the team name of "T & A" in 1:14:33.

CHICAGO, IL - Congrats to everyone who finished. It was a very fun trip despite the cold weather and wind. At least it didn’t rain before or during the race which would have made conditions much tougher. Still the bone chilling head wind in the last few miles was a tough challenge.

Info on Coach Carl Borg

Carl joined the Multisports OC Team as a coach in 2006. He is certified through the International Sports Science Association (ISSA), CFT, and is also a Certified USAT (USA Triathlon) level 1 Coach.
Athletic Background
Carl has been active in adventure and endurance sports since 1985. He began surfing at the age of 11 and has continued ever since. Carl began racing Cross Country mountain bikes back in 1994 and has raced Expert class XC since 1996, as well as being a Cat 4. Roadie since 1997. Cross training by trail running and rock climbing turned into an addiction in 2001, He now has several ultra distance runs under his belt but he prefers the shorter faster races. Rock climbing was used as rehabilitation for his broken shoulders suffered in two unrelated bike crashes. Rock climbing changed his entire outlook on strength and core training. Carl says the adrenaline rush of bouldering has yet to be matched, But equates this sport to a mix of ballet and chess. The sport of Triathlon came into play in 2005 where the linking of 3 sports has become an incredible challenge. Carl focuses on sprint, Olympic and Xterra events. In the 2006 season he produced 5 top 4 finishes out of the 6 races he has entered.
