OC DUATHLON RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

Posted by Michael Collins at Jun 3, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
IRVINE LAKE, CA - Despite the fact that there was no swimming allowed at the first OC Triathlon (renamed the OC Duathlon), at least 23 Nova Masters and Multisports OC members rose to the challenge of the difficult course in Santiago Canyon. It was a great day for a race. The same race organizers as the Pacific Coast Triathlon put on a FIRST CLASS first time event. The venue was excellent and the course was very spectator friendly with at least 3-4 spots to see athletes on the run course each lap. Mark Haskins led the charge for the team with a 5th place overall, showing his awesome training form and improvements are for REAL! He had the 2nd fastest bike split, less than 30 seconds off the overall winners split Kevin Herbert, and even beat Coach Mike on the bike for the 1st time in competition. He was also one of only a handful of male athletes who ran the 2nd run within a minute of their first run - three of those who did finished in the top 5 overall. Congrats to Haskins, Jim Lewis, Art Sousa, Kristen Thorkelson, & Vijay "Sandbag" Sampath who all split their second run within a minute of their first run! Vijay actually ran his second run a minute FASTER. Don't be AFRAID to go fast in your next race, Vijay! Kristen was one of only TWO women who split the second run within a minute of the first. Also thanks to Travis and Carmen from Performance Chiropractic for coming out and working on our athletes before and after the race. See additional photos HERE. Are you in a rut with your training or improvement? Are you a triathlete with good conditioning but poor technique, pacing, or race strategy skills? Are you training for a key event that you would really like to perform at your top level in? Are you highly inefficient in the water or fearful in dealing with open water? Are you confused by all the technique and training information out there, and don't know what is REALLY important for you to follow? Are you confused with Heart Rate Zone Training or using Power data for the bike? Are you somewhat "burned-out" from doing things the same way for a long time, and need to add some new ideas to your training to re-kindle your motivation? Are you considering doing an Off-Road (Xterra) mountain bike triathlon, but need help with your mountain biking skills? If you answered YES to one or more these questions then consider signing up for a 3 or 5 day Personal Triathlon Technique & Training Camp with the Multisports OC Staff. A MULTISPORTS OC PERSONAL TRIATHLON CAMP includes the following: * Initial interview to discuss training and racing history, upcoming events and goals, and biggest areas of interest for improvement. * Initial Video Technique Evaluation in each sport (Swim-Bike-Run) * Instructional videos to view to shorten your learning time. * 1-2 daily instructional sessions for technique and training development * 1-2 daily group training sessions with Multisports OC * End of camp video analysis to see improvment * Wrap-up interview to discuss suggested follow-up actions to meet your performance goals. * Free Airport Pick-up and drop-off if coming from out of town (to John Wayne, Orange County, CA SNA). Here's what athletes have said about the camp: "All I spent was 3 days with Coach Mike and the improvements he helped me make we're unbelievably helpful. With the new techniques I learned, I am now able to pretty much half my effort and still improve my time. I am now a more efficient athlete and am less prone to injury as well. The program is worth every second if you're interested in moving up in the ranks of triathletes!" - Riley W., 17 The race went well today. Travis placed 6th overall and 1st in the 1 - 18 male age group with his time of 1:22.40, 6:18 average pace. It was a 4 minute PR for him, and the 1:22 time moved him into the sub-elite category for this race, so it was a good day. Thanks for your help with his form and strategy. - Todd CLOSEST AIRPORTS John Wayne, Orange County (SNA) - Less than 10 miles (Free airport pick-up) Long Beach (LGB) - Approx 35 miles - (Possible pick-up if time is right) Los Angeles (LAX) - Approx 50 miles - (You will need to secure your own transportation from this airport. 2006 OC MARATHON HIGHLIGHTS

Posted by Michael Collins at Jan 8, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
IRVINE, CA - More than 35 Multisports OC members participated in the OC Marathon, Half and 5k. Top stars of the day were Alyssa Bently who won the 25-29 division of the Marathon, and Brandy Bounds who placed 3rd in 20-24. Both also qualified for the Boston Marathon. The race also served as the Clydsdale National Championships for the Half Marathon. In the 190-210 Divison Nova Masters swimmer Jeff Rhodes was 2nd in 1:29:20. Mike McNeill won the 226+ category in 1:53:02, and Mole Rodgers was 2nd in the 40+ 211-225 Category at 1:47:56. He was happy to "spank" his older brother Brian who was 7th in 2:07:37. Congratulations to those of you who had good races, and condolences to those of you who didn't reach your goals. I was one of those who didn't meet expectations, as I was shooting for a sub 3 hour marathon, but due to a flu ended up dropping out with a very high HR while slipping off of goal pace near the 15 mile mark (which was conveniently right at my house). I chose to save the effort for another day instead of spending the next month recovering from the extreme effort necessary to complete a marathon. For those of you interested in doing a fast Marathon this fall we are looking to take a big group to the Chicago Marathon which is slated for Oct. 22, 2006.
