Westfield FC U16's will this season play in the West Surrey Youth League Premier Division. The team is a feeder team to the highly successful current U18 youth squad who after winning the Treble(Surrey County Cup, West Surrey Prem Div & West Surrey Cup) two years on the trot again reached the Surrey County Cup final this year losing 6-5 on penalties and came runners up in the league. The current side having made the transition this season into U18 Southern Youth League football played on Wednesday nights under floodlights, the very young side acquitting themselves very well over the last two seasons coming runners up and fourth in a league made up of mainly Ryman Clubs youth teams.

Westfield 4 Abbey Rangers 2

‘Field followed on from their previous excellent performance against Guildford Saints with another promising showing against Abbey Rangers. Two first half goals from Sam Lewiston were the reward from some great play by all the team but especially from Mark Robson in central midfield and Jamie Folley on the right. Abbey then tested ‘Field’s resolve pulling level with two quick goals both of good quality, just before half time. This was to prove just the test ‘Field needed and they responded excellently after half time, Joe Byrne added some positive talk to an excellent personal performance, his constructive and intelligent talk helping all the players around him. It was Jamie Locke who put ‘Field back in front latching on to Lewiston’s unselfish through ball to cap his best game for the side so far with a goal. Centre backs Ross Mellin and Steven Buckland now had full control of Abbey’s dangerous forwards, it was no supprise when Chris Pestle showed the rewards for all his fitness work he has done this season popping up at the far post to fire come the clinching goal. Liam Stone in the ‘Field goal also warrants a mention with a near faultless display. Team: Stone, Byrne, Mellin, Buckland, Pestle, Kealy, Galbraith, Robson, Folley, Locke, Lewiston Subs: King, Worsley.

Westfield 6 Guildford Saints 1

Posted by Vic Locke at Aug 17, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
‘Field put in an excellent performance on Sunday, they played some excellent passing football to beat Guildford Saints. Liam Stone had a very confident game in goal and a back four of Chris Pestle, David Shutt, Ross Mellin and Joe Byrne, who opened the scoring, all looked very comfortable and solid giving Saints few chances throughout the match. Captain Mark Robson enjoyed a fine game in the centre of midfield often slowing the game and getting ‘Field’s passing game going while his partner in the centre Steven Buckland also had a promising game as did James Kealy on the left. On the right Jamie Folley had a great debut scoring a good goal and putting in numerous telling crosses into the Saints box. The forwards Sam Lewiston and Jamie Locke both worked hard and had good games, Lewiston causing the Saints defence non stop headaches as he scored four fine goals the most rewarding a fine far post header, something he has been working hard on in training this season. Ryan King also deserves a mention coming on and defending soundly and also using the ball well. Tom Winter scored Saints consolation mid way through the second half. Team: Stone, Byrne, Mellin, Shutt, Pestle, Kealy, Buckland, Robson, Folley, Locke, Lewiston Subs: King, Hyde, McDaid.
