MAVERICKS POUND SAN PASQUAL 9-2

The Mavericks (6-1)waited until the 7th inning to break out and beat San Pasqual(2-4) nine to two. Will Stoffel pitched two & 1/3rd innings, entering the game in the bottom of the 5th with the bases loaded, to strike out one, and then struck out 4 of the next 6 batters. In the top of the 7th Burke walked, Chapelone was hit by a pitch, and after the runners moved up one base on a wild pitch, Stoffel hit a sacrafice fly to score Burke with the go ahead run. Oseguera was intentionally walked, Alvarez singled, Diehl walked in a run, Fuller hit a sac fly, Nacario doubled in a run, and Sterk singled to left to score two and raced around to score himself when the ball went through the left fielder. image
The Mavericks turned the tables on Bonita Vista in a 10-5 victory to win the Falcon/Pirate Tournament. Travis Goldbach pitched four innings for his first win of the year, yielding a first inning solo home run, and then getting 9 ground ball outs, while striking out 2, and walking 2. Brian Brehm came in to pitch the final three innings and earn the save. Brian struck out 2, walked 1 and gave up two wind aided 2 run HR's. Jackson Chapelone collected 5 rbi's on a 3rd inning home run with one on, and a 6th inning double off the fence with the bases loaded to score three more. In the top of the third Diehl walked, Fuller reached on a fielder's choice and Nacario singled. With a hit and run play on, Fuller stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher; while the trailing runner Nacario scored when the left fielders throw was off line. In the top of the 5th with Zumaya pitching, Burke walked, Jackson walked and Will Stoffel hit an rbi single to right. Defensive highlights included catcher Anthony Alvarez jumping on a swinging bunt and throwing the runner out at first and Nick Diehl back handing a ground ball behind third and throwing the runner out for the final out of the game. Zepeda had 13 put outs at first, including a couple of error saving scoops.

MAVERICKS EDGE PATRIOTS 4-3

Tyler Ryan pitched a complete game win over Orange Glen 4-3 with his brother Matt catching the game and adding a nice diving catch. Tyler struck out 6 and did not walk a batter in giving up only 3 earned runs to raise his record to 1 win and 1 save and no losses, as the Mavericks upped their team record to 4-1. In the bottom of the first inning Casey Sterk tripled and scored on Joey Burke's sacrafice fly. In the bottom of the seventh inning Sterk singled and then scored the winning run on Burke's double to the right center gap. Andrew Nacario was 3 for 4, one double and scored the tying run on the back end of a double steal with Burke. Will Stoffel went 2 for 3, with a double.

Bonita Vista 15 La Costa Canyon 5

Andrew Nacario went for 4 for 4 with two doubles, but the Mavericks took their first loss of the year in a nonbracket tournament game. If the Mavs win on Thursday at home against Orange Glen they will most likely advance to the Championship game on Saturday at Oceanside High School.

Mavericks Top Mt Carmel 6-5

In the rain make up game the Mavericks rallied with 3 runs in the 6th inning on a bases loaded 3 rbi double by Joey Burke to tie the game and in the top of the 7th Casey Sterk beat out an infield hit for his 4th hit of the game, and pinch runner Eddie Signaigo scored the winning run when the late throw got past the first baseman. In the first inning Sterk doubled, scored on Burke's single, and Oseguera doubled in Burke. The Mavs left the bases loaded in both the 1st and 4th innings. Will Stoffel started for the Mavs, going 5 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, on 4 hits, including a solo home run by Daniel Fitch in the 5th inning, while striking out 6 and walking 2. Michael Kenney came in to pitch a scoreless 6th inning, giving up only one hit, stranding a runner at second, to earn his first Varsity win. Andrew Logan pitched to 3 batters in the bottom of the 7th to get the save.
