John Peabody(5-0, 0.23ERA) pitched 6 shut out innings, on 5 hits, 5 walks and 6 strike outs as Rancho Bernardo beat La Costa Canyon 8-3. Will Stoffel (2-1) took the loss as he pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, on 7 hits, 2 walks and striking out 4. M. Kenney finished up, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit, while walking 4, hitting one and striking out 3. Jackson Chapalone hit a 3 run rbi double in the 7th inning after Fuller singled, Nacario singled and Sterk walked. Paul Oseguera was 2 for 3 and Casey Sterk scored once and was walked 3 times. Rancho Bernardo hangs on to it's No. 1 ranking in the County, No. 5 in the Cal Hi State Rankings. The Mavericks are ranked No 3 in the County and No. 13 in the Cal Hi State Rankings. This was the third Championship Game in Three Preseason Tournaments for the Mavericks, having won the Falcon/Pirate and the Lions Classic Division Tournaments.

LA COSTA CANYON WHIPS TORREY PINES 9-4

Jackson Chapalone hit a solo home run and an rbi double, Nick Diehl went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, Casey Sterk went 2 for 3 with one double and Will Stoffel scored twice to lead the Maverick offense, which despite leaving 15 runners on base, scored 9 runs and helped push the Mavericks into Saturday night's North County Tournament Championship Game against No 1 randked Rancho Bernardo. The defense was anchored by Burke, Fuller and Chapalone as they turned a 4-6-3, and a 6-4-3 double play to help the pitchers. Johnny Zepeda pitched a strong 3 innnings, allowing only 1 earned run, on 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Andrew Logan pitched the middle two innings, allowing 1 earned run on a solo home run by Hughes, a total of 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Tyler Ryan finished up the game, also yielding 1 earned run on Gibbs solo home run in the bottom of the 7th, while striking out 3, and being credited with his 4th win against no losses. The Mavericks advanced to the Championship Game with a 4-1 tournament record as Mt Carmel beat Oceanside 3-1 and Carlsbad tied San Pasqual 5-5.

BREHM SHUTS DOWN Mt CARMEL 7-1

Brian Brehm took only 85 pitches to pitch a complete game 7-1 win over Mt Carmel, yielding no earned runs on 5 hits, 1 walk and 6 strike outs. Paul Oseguera hit a home run with two on in the bottom of the first inning, an rbi double in the 3rd and scored on Stoffel's single. Andrew Nacario went 3 for 4 with 1 rbi. On the previous Tuesday the No. County Times CIF San Diego Section Baseball Poll: 1. Rancho Bernardo (3) 11-2; 2. Montgomery (3) 12-1 3. La Costa Canyon (4) 11-3 4. Mission Bay 11-2 5. MAVERICKS OUT LAST SAN MARCOS 10-8

The Mavericks fell behind 3-0, rallied to take a 10-3 lead and then held on to beat Avocado League rival San Marcos to advance to the Championship Game of the 2002 Lions Tournament Classic Division. Andrew Logan pitched 5 strong innings before tiring in the 7th, to pick up his second win. Tyler Ryan came in to get the final two outs on a ground ball to Fuller and a strike out for his second save to go with his 3 runs. Nick Diehl led the offense, 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in, while Paul Oseguera was 3 for 4, 1 rbi and 2 runs scored, and Casey Sterk was 2 for 4 with 2 rbi's.

MAVERICKS WIN LIONS BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

The Mavericks kept coming back and finally beat Mission Bay 7-6 in extra innings to win the 52nd Annual Lions Mike Morrow Invitational Baseball Tournament's Classic Division(Highest Division) Championship. Michael Kenney pitched 5 innings in relief, yielding only two unearned runs, on 3 hits, 4 strikeouts, and 4 walks, to get the win (2-0) and the Most Valuable Player Trophy. In the bottom of the 7th inning Paul Oseguera drove in his 3rd rbi and William Stoffel followed with a sacrafice fly to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 8th Matt Ryan doubled, Fuller hit into a fielder's choice, and Nacario singled. Casey Sterk followed with a hard single to left to score Fuller with the winning run and the Maverick bench dog piled Fuller at home plate. Casey Sterk went 3 for 4, scored twice and had the game winning rbi. Paul Oseguera had 3 runs batted in and Joey Burke had two singles and scored twice. Jackson Chapalone had an rbi in the 3rd inning and Fuller knocked in Stoffel in the 4th. Johnny Zepeda started for the Mavs going 3 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and striking out 5. This year's Lions Invitational Classic Division tournament field included Mission Bay (ranked 17th in the Nation by BCA Baseball America), Rancho Bernardo (ranked 4th in the Nation by BCA Baseball America)Valhalla, Montgomery, Grossmont, Eastlake, San Marcos, and the non San Diego County teams included Bingham, Utah; Basic, Nev; Green Valley, Nev; Alta, Utah; Elk Grove, Sacramento; Silverado, Nev; Madera, Ca; and Chaparral, Temecula.
