2002 AVOCADO LEAGUE STANDINGS

The Mavericks won their fourth game in six days, to win their fourth Avocado League Championship in the last five years. Team depth continues to be the key with both pitching and hitting as the Mavericks clobbered El Camino 10 - 3. Jackson Chapalone went 3 for 3, with two singles, one towering home run, 3 runs batted in, scored 3 runs, and he also pitched the final inning, getting the last out on a strike out. Paul Oseguera went 3 for 3, with 2 doubles and 3 runs batted in. Chris Fuller was 2 for 2, with 1 rbi before he caught a bad hop with his eye and was replaced by Eddie Signaigo and when Signaigo moved to third Hunter Hartman came in at 2nd. Travis Goldbach pitched two scoreless innings, striking out 4 and walking none. Zepeda got his 3rd win in a row against two losses. The 2nd ranked Mavericks maintained a perfect 10-0 league record, 23-4 overall. Coach Machado celebrated his 4th League Title in the six years LCC has been open wearing a Padre batting helmet to protect his noggin that was nailed by a foul ball in the dug out during Saturday's game.
In another 13 run outburst the Mavericks buried the second place Fallbrook Warriors 13-9 and clinched at least a tie for their Fourth Avocado League Championship in the last five years. The Mavs are now 9-0 and 22-4 overall while Fallbrook fell to 5-5 and 13-12. William Stoffel and Anthony Alvarez each knocked in 4 runs on a couple of hits while Joey Burke, Casey Sterk and Nick Diehl each went 2 for 3, with Burke scoring 3 times and Sterk and Diehl 2 each. Fallbrook took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two unearned runs. In the bottom of the first with the bases loaded Stoffel singled to right to score two and in the bottom of the 2nd inning Diehl doubled, Nacario singled and Sterk doubled to score two more and put the Mavs up 4-2. Kenney relieved Stoffel to start the 5th inning and after a HbP, and a walk, Wideman homered for Fallbrook to give them a 6-4 lead. In the bottom half the Mavs regained the lead at 7-6 as Burke reached on an error, Oseguera singled, Stoffel singled to score Burke and Alvarez hit a 2rbi double off the center field fence. The Warriors tied the game in the top of the 6th on a solo home run by Cueva. In the bottom of the 6th the Mavs blew open the game with 6 more runs as Alvarez hit another 2 rbi double, Diehl singled in one and Nacario knocked in two more with a double. In the top of the 7th Josiah Brand led off with a double, his CIF record 12th consecutive hit, and after two more doubles in a row to cut the lead to 9-13, Tyler Ryan was brought in to get the last three outs. William Stoffel went four innings, allowing 1 earned run, on 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Michael Kenney (4-0) got the win in relief as he went two innings, giving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits, 2 walks and striking out 2. Tyler Ryan (7-0)finished out the game but did not get his 3rd save because he had a 4 run lead.
The twenty foot high outfield fence at Fallbrook High School was not high enough as home runs by Oseguera, Fuller, Nacario, Burke and Sterk, each with a man aboard accounted for ten runs. The Mavs rallied with 4 runs in the 6th and the 7th innings to beat second place Fallbrook 13-8. The balanced attack with 17 hits was led by Nacario who also had a single and a double, and Sterk with two more doubles to go with their home runs. Brian Brehm yielded 5 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Andrew Logan got his 3rd win in relief against no losses as he went 3 and 2/3rd innings, giving up 2 earned runs on the home run, 2 hits, 1 walk and 4 strike outs. La Costa Canyon upped their record to 8-0 and 21-4 overall while Fallbrook fell to 5-4 and 13-11 overall.
