Mavericks NO HIT Carlsbad in 3-1 win

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at May 10, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Will Stoffel threw a complete game no hitter, and knocked in two runs in the top of the 7th, as the Mavericks beat Carlsbad 3-1 to maintain their one half game lead over Fallbrook in the Avocado League race with three games remaining. It was probably a good thing that CIF ruled not to finish the Tuesday tie game with Carlsbad because the first five innings went by without a run or a single hit by either side. In the top of the 6th inning Eric Stewart struck out on a high inside fast ball, reached first on the passed ball by the catcher, went to second on the catcher's throwing error and went to third on the right fielder's throwing error. After two outs Jackson Chapelone came up with a hard single up the middle for the first hit of the game to score Stewart. In the top of the 7th Nick Diehl and Andrew Nacario singled and both scored on a bouncer into left field by Will Stoffel. In the bottom of the 7th a walk and a dropped fly ball put runners at 2nd & 3rd with one out. Stoffel snared a shot back up the middle, threw to first for the second out, but a botched triple run down play allowed the one unearned run to score. Stoffel struck out Wyman for the final out of the game. WP LCC Stoffel (4-0-1), no hits, 4-SO's, 2-BB's, lowered ERA to 0.96. LP C Koller (3-5) 3 losses to LCC, 9-SO's, 2-BB's, 1-HBP, 4 hits, 2 earned runs. La Costa Canyon 15-9-1, 8-2-1 Carlsbad 12-12-2, 4-8-1 See game summary for more details.
