Chris Fuller hit his first Varsity Home Run, with Matt Ryan on base, doubled and scored twice to spark a rally. The luckless Brian Brehm pitched 3.66 innings, striking out 6, walking 5, on only two hits while yielding only one earned run. Tyler Ryan(1-0-1) made his second appearance in as many games to pick up the win, while giving up only 1 hit, striking out 2 and walking none. A half dozen infield errors made the game interesting but the Mavs never gave up. Chris Fuller finished 2 for 3, one double, on home run, 2 runs scored and 2 rbi's. Anderew Nacario was 2 for 4 with a double, Casey Sterk was 2 for 4, with 2 runs scored and one rbi, DH Paul Oseguera was 2 for 3 with one rbi, and with two outs in the 5th inning Will Stoffel singled to center to knock in the final two runs.

MAVERICKS WIN OPENER 6-5

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at Mar 3, 2002 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Mavericks started off the 2002 season by beating Scripps Ranch 6-5 at the LCC Varsity Field. The offense was sparked by a combination of power and speed as Joey Burke knocked in three runs on a solo home run, an infield hit and a ground out. Casey Sterk hit a triple over the centerfielder's head to score two runs and Andrew Nacario added two doubles. In the bottom of the 5th inning Nacario scored on Burke's infield single to put the Mavs back in the lead 5-4. Burke moved to third on DH Paul Oseguera's single and scored the eventual winning run on Jackson Chapelone's second single of the game. Johnny Zepeda started for Mavericks and went three and one third innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 6 walks and striking out 3. Middle relief pitcher Andrew Logan pitched a strong one and two-thirds innings to earn the win, allowing only 1 run on 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 2. The save went to the brother/brother battery of Tyler Ryan and Matt Ryan. When Logan walked the first batter to start the 6th inning Tyler came in to strike out two Falcons in arow before yielding a triple down the right field line to allow one run to score. He then notched his third strike out to end the sixth and started the seventh with two more K's before getting the final out on a fly ball to right. Records La Costa Canyon 1-0 Scripps Ranch 0-1
