The Trumbull Eagles opened up the CIAC D2 State Tournament with a 4-1 upset win over the Chesire Rams. Trumbull lost the regular season matchup 3-0 and entered the tournament as the 14th seed. The Rams, the 3 seed, were all over Trumbull early but goaltender, Gabe Deist was awesome early on and stayed strong all game. Defenseman, Tyler Hickey opened up the scoring giving THS a 1-0 lead after one period.

Special teams were key in Trumbull’s win. The Rams could not get anything going on their power play chances thanks to the Eagle penalty killers while Trumbull landed a power play goal from Jake Terlik (1g, 2a) and essentially another from Nick Smagacz as time expired on a Ram infraction. Jacques Roy put the nail in the coffin with an empty netter, punching Trumbull’s ticket to the quarterfinals.

The Eagles will face the Branford Hornets (#6) on Friday 5:00pm at Bennett Rink, West Haven, CT.

GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!
