TRUMBULL STARTS SECOND HALF WITH A WIN

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Jan 23, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles ended the first half of the season with a 3-7-0 record.  During their first ten games the Eagles faced off against seven division 1 opponents.

The black and gold started off the second half with a 3-1 win over the Stamford Black Knights.  The last ten games of the season are against all division 2 and division 3 opponents so Trumbull should make a solid run at a state tournament bid.

Goaltender, Andrew Oxfeld has been solid between the pipes and the young Trumbull defensemen seem to be coming into their own.  Brian Sarosky and Matt Hyde have been consistantly good but will need some help from Matt Bragano, Andrew Kelly, John Pritts and Derek Dimasi down the stretch.

EAGLES SNAP LOSING STREAK

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Jan 9, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Eagles snapped a four game losing streak which saw them face some of the state's toughest teams.  After losses to Fairfield, Immaculate, Xavier and Darien, Trumbull earned an important 5-3 victory over the Westhill Vikings who have been struggling without their best player, Andrew Flynn.

The key moment of the game came with 14 seconds remaining in the second period.  The Eagles executed a key play off a defensive zone face off which sent Brian Sarosky in alone for the score.  On the following face off, Matt Hyde pressed and scored the eventual game winner with 3 seconds remaining.  Hyde scored an empty net goal for a 2 goal / 1 assist night.  Sarosky had a goal and 2 assists.  Freshman, Andrew Vietze scored his first goal as a Trumbull Eagle.

EAGLES GO 1-2 IN FCIAC CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Dec 27, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Eagles went 1-2 in the FCIAC Christmas Tournament.  Trumbull showed flashes but were often unable to put together three periods of solid hockey.

Trumbull played a solid first period against Greenwich, with Anrew Kelly scoring the first goal of the game, but were badly out shot during the second and third periods.  They managed to hold on with some solid work from Andrew Oxfeld and entered the third period trailing 2-1.  The Eagles' inexperienced showed as they let up 4 third period goals (3 in the last few minutes).

THS rebounded with a 6-4 victory over Stamford.  Matt Bragano notched a hat-trick and linemates Brian Sarosky scored a goal and 3 assists and Andrew Kelly added 3 assists.  Trumbull was clearly in control from the start with a 3-0 first period but sloppy defensive play in the second let Stamford slip back and make it a game.

The final game of the tournament ended in a 4-2 loss to highly regarded Fairfield HS.  Again, THS got off to a good start with two quick goals from Sarosky and Matt Hyde.  Fairfield was effective in getting the puck deep and taking advantage of the Eagle defense.  Although the shots were close throughout the game, Trumbull looked fatigued down the stretch and were unable to convert on a number of third period power plays.

Trumbull is now 2-2-0 with the toughest part of their schedule ahead.  They will travel to Danbury this Saturday to square off against Immaculate HS.

PRE-SEASON WRAP UP

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Dec 10, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Eagles will open the 2007-2008 season this Wednesday at home against the Watertown / Pomperaug Co-op.   In preparation, Trumbull scrimmaged Daniel Hand HS, North Branford and participated in the jamboree hosted by The Rinks.

Trumbull lost to Hand, which scored two late third period goals, 4-1.  With senior, Jake Watson out of the line-up due to illness, the Eagle defense was made up of four freshmen and returning sophomore, Dale Elbert.  Andrew Oxfeld looked sharp but received little help from the Trumbull offense.

The offense looked better against North Branford but failed to capitalize on some good scoring opportunities.  Freshmen Andrew Vietze and Andrew Pierson put in solid performances and "Ox" again looked good giving up only one goal.  Junior, Stephen Anrico let up two.  Brian Sarosky's goal was the only tally as the Eagles fell 3-1.

Trumbull lost to Greenwich 1-0, tied Wilton 1-1 and lost to Watertown 2-0 in single period play during the Jamboree.  Again, the young defensemen and goaltenders played well but THS struggled to break out of their zone and failed to get enough pucks at the opposition net.
