HHS DEFEATS FRIENDSHIP CHRISTIAN 5-1

The Commandos picked up their second straight 5-1 win on Saturday night as they defeated Friendship Christian at Drakes Creek Park.

Chase Nelson picked up his second win of the year on the mound going five innings while striking out 9 and allowing only two hits.  Andrew Dorris and Kobe Carter finished the game on the mound for the Commandos.

The Commandos struck for two runs in the bottom of the first as Austin Mays singled to start the game.  A double by Harrison Williams was followed by a single from Hayden Layne which scored Mays and Williams to make the score 2-0. 

After Friendship Christian cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third thanks to a two-out triple from Braden Reese, HHS bounced back with two more runs to mkae the score 4-1.  Gabe Dalton singled to score Harrison Williams who had singled and stolen second.  Dalton moved to second of the throw and scored on back to back wild pitches to make the score 4-1.

A two-out single from Reid Nelson in the bottom of the sixth scored Gabe Dalton who had walked to give the game its final score of 5-1.  Carter came on in the seventh to strike out two of the three Commanders he faced to end the game. 

With the win HHS improves to 15-4 on the year.  The Commandos will next play at home vs Gallatin on Tuesday April 18 at 7:00 pm.

HHS DEFEATS PORTLAND 6-0

The Commandos got a second straight shutout from a sophomore pitcher en route to a 6-0 win over Portland on Wednesday night at Drakes Creek Park.  Hayden Mullins threw a complete game, allowed only one hit and struck out 14 Panthers to pick up his third win of the year.

Mullins allowed his lone hit of the game, a two-out double in the first inning off the bat of Kaleb Wilson.  After that, the left hander retired 17 out of the 19 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the 7th to preserve the win.

 Portland Sophomore Brandon Tucker held the Commandos in check until the 5th inning as the game was knotted up 0-0.  HHS stranded 6 runners through the first four innings including men on second and third with no outs in the second.  Finally in the top of the fifth the Commandos got to Tucker.

Reid Nelson led off with a single and moved all the way to third on an errant pick off attempt.  Nelson scored on a wild pitch to give HHS a 1-0 lead.  Austin Mays followed with a triple and scored on a Brett Coker sac fly to make the score 2-0.  With two outs Hayden Layne singled and advanced to second on an error.  Layne would come around to score on a wild throw to first to give HHS a 3-0 lead. 

The Commandos would extend the lead in the top of the sixth.  Nate Vaughn doubled to lead off the inning.  Courtsey runner Grant Lang stole third and following a walk to Chase Nelson scored on an RBI grounder from Reid Nelson.  Chase Nelson scored on an RBI single from Coker and Layne would drive in Coker to give the game its final score of 6-0.

With the win HHS improves to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in District 9AAA.  The Commandos are now 2-0 in Northern Division play.  HHS will next play at Overton on Thursday night at 7:00.

HHS DEFEATS OVERTON 5-1

The Commandos used a solid pitching performance from Hayden Layne and Kobe Carter combined with 3 hits each from Gabe Dalton and Harrison Williams to defeat the Bobcats at Overton on Thursday afternoon.

Layne improved to 2-0 on the year going 4 and 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run while striking out six.  Carter picked up his fourth save of the year striking out two in 1 and 1/3 IP. 

The Commandos grabbed the lead in the top of the second as Caid Sanders picked up his first career hit, a double and scored on an RBI grounder off the bat of Nate Vaughn. 

In the top of the third HHS would extend the lead.  A one out double from Williams was followed by back to back singles from Hayden Layne and Gabe Dalton to make the score 2-0.  Sanders singled in Dalton to make it 3-0.

Williams would score his second run of the game in the top of the 5th as he led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on Gabe Dalton's second hit of the game to make the score 4-0.

Overton would threaten in the fifth.  The leadoff man for the Bobcats reached on an error, but Layne got the next two hitters to strike out.  However, back to back singles made the score 4-1 and brought Eric Altizer into the game with the tying run at the plate. Altizer got a pop up to left to end the threat. 

A walk and a double led to another scoring threat for Overton in the bottom of the sixth, but Kobe Carter came on out of the bulpen to record a strikeout to end the inning and keep the score 4-1.

HHS would score the game's final run in the top of the seventh.  Williams singled and came around to score on a Sac Fly from Caid Sanders to make the score 5-1. Carter retired Overton in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save, his fourth of the year.

With the win HHS improves to 14-4 on the year.

HHS DEFEATS PORTLAND 8-0

Portland got a base hit on the first pitch of the game on Tuesday night off of Sophomore right hander Cameron Hansen but that was the only hit Hansen would allow for the entire game.  Hansen struck out 14 Panthers in a dominant complete game performance as the Commandos openened play in the North Division of 9AAA with an 8-0 win over Portland.

The Commandos scored two in the bottom of the first and Austin Mays led off with a single and scored on a triple from Brett Coker.  Coker scored on an RBI grounder off the bat of Hayden Layne to make the score 2-0.

That was all the support Hansen would need.  The Sophomore struck out 10 out of the first 14 hitters he faced  and used his defense in the middle innings to pick up his fourth win of the year.

Mays led the Commando offense with three hits, Coker, Austin Halas and Gabe Dalton added two a piece, while Hayden Layne drove in two runs. 

With the win HHS improves to 12-4 on the year, 4-1 in District 9AAA and 1-0 in the Northern Division.  The Commandos will next play at Portland on Tuesday at 6:00.

HHS DEFEATS HILLSBORO 12-2

The Commandos got three hits from Brett Coker and four RBIs from Hayden Layne en route to a 12-2 victory over the Burroughs from Hillsboro on Friday night.

Hillsboro took an early 2-1 lead going to the third inning but RBI singles from Coker and Layne gave the Commandos the lead back at 3-2 which they would only extend from there.

The Commandos would put the game out of reach with six runs in the fourth inning.  A one-out double from Reid Nelson scored Chase Nelson and Hayden Mullins who had walked and been hit by a pitch.  Back to back two out walks to Coker and Harrison Williams loaded the bases and Layne cleared them with  a three-run triple to make the score 8-2.  Layne would score on a wild pitch to give HHS a 9-2 lead.

The Commandos would end the game in the bottom of the fifth as back to back doubles from Brett Coker and Eric Altizer scored three runs to give HHS the 12-2 victory.

Senior Andrew Dorris picked up the win on the mound tossing the game's middle two innings.  Senior Matt Nicoll pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  With the win HHS improves to 10-4 on the year.
