Posted by Andy Gilley on Apr 12 2017 at 05:00PM PDT

The Commandos got a second straight shutout from a sophomore pitcher en route to a 6-0 win over Portland on Wednesday night at Drakes Creek Park.  Hayden Mullins threw a complete game, allowed only one hit and struck out 14 Panthers to pick up his third win of the year.

Mullins allowed his lone hit of the game, a two-out double in the first inning off the bat of Kaleb Wilson.  After that, the left hander retired 17 out of the 19 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the 7th to preserve the win.

Portland Sophomore Brandon Tucker held the Commandos in check until the 5th inning as the game was knotted up 0-0.  HHS stranded 6 runners through the first four innings including men on second and third with no outs in the second.  Finally in the top of the fifth the Commandos got to Tucker.

Reid Nelson led off with a single and moved all the way to third on an errant pick off attempt.  Nelson scored on a wild pitch to give HHS a 1-0 lead.  Austin Mays followed with a triple and scored on a Brett Coker sac fly to make the score 2-0.  With two outs Hayden Layne singled and advanced to second on an error.  Layne would come around to score on a wild throw to first to give HHS a 3-0 lead.

The Commandos would extend the lead in the top of the sixth.  Nate Vaughn doubled to lead off the inning.  Courtsey runner Grant Lang stole third and following a walk to Chase Nelson scored on an RBI grounder from Reid Nelson.  Chase Nelson scored on an RBI single from Coker and Layne would drive in Coker to give the game its final score of 6-0.

With the win HHS improves to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in District 9AAA.  The Commandos are now 2-0 in Northern Division play.  HHS will next play at Overton on Thursday night at 7:00.
