About the KC Select Program

Posted by Lisa Zapata at Aug 7, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Fall Select Program will consist of teams that compete in at least three tournaments this fall with two of the tournaments being away from the KC field and the other being our own tournament. Tournaments are generally held on the weekend and practices will depend on the manager and field availability. Number of select teams will depend on the quality and number of players and managers available. The Select teams compete with other Select teams from the surrounding area (Pony, AAU, Baseball USA, USSSA, Junior League, etc.).

About the KC Fall Season

Posted by Lisa Zapata at Aug 7, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Participants in the KC Fall Season will play approx. 15 to 18 games. Most games will be Tue., Wed., and Thurs. with the possibility of a few Sat. games. The season will start on Sept. 16 and end the week before Thanksgiving, with an end of season tournament.
The KC 13y/o Titans are mainly made up of 13 year olds but the team received a big boost this weekend aiding us in advancing to the Westbury Summer Classic V. Championship Game (to be played Tuesday Night at 7:30 at the Westbury Little League, Sr. Field). The Westbury Tournament included 9 teams that are 14 and under. The Titans defeated a combined League City, Friendswood, Alvin area team Saturday Night and a 14 year old solid Sagemont team Sunday afternoon 4-3 in extra innings. The semifinal was a nail biter from the first pitch until the end. After the Titans scored two runs in the first two innings the Sagemont team brought in their hard throwing right hander who held the Titans in check; however the Titans scratched their way to score two runs in the last 5 innings to claim the victory. The 13 year olds playing in this Tournament are Brian Borski, Cameron Brown, Alex Cernoch, Aaron Dushkin, George Murphy, Karl Pringle, and Mark Robichau. The 14 year olds that provided the shot in the arm are, Hunter Johnson, Michael Johnson (who played with the team on Sunday), Chris St. Aubin (who played Saturday), Matthew Strom (who played Sunday) and Gerry Morrison (who played both Saturday and Sunday). If you have a chance, come root with us Tuesday Night, August 6th, at 7:30pm. For directions, please go to Westburyll.org. If you are on Chimney Rock heading south, you take a left on Dryad, which is where the Westbury High School Baseball Field is, you continue down Dryad until it dead ends. You then take a right into the Westbury Little League complex and continue all the way back, where you will see the Senior Field is on the right.
After winning District and Section tournaments, Kyle Chapman 14y/os advanced to the Coast Region Tournament in Port Neches over this past weekend with a 6-0 record. KC lost the 1st game of the tournament to Port Neches 4-2. In the second game of the the regionals, KC beat Friendswood 3-2. Then in the 3rd game Pasadena beat KC 6-4. (Click on the headline to read the details of these games- colorfully provided by Brent Patterson. We have all thoroughly enjoyed Brent's commentaries through-out the season. Thank-you Brent!) With this loss, Kyle Chapman 14y/o All Stars ended a very successful season. This team, managed by Cliff Atherton, and coached by Ray Redding and Mark Carney, represented Houston in a manner that makes all associated with Kyle Chapman baseball proud. This is the end for this group of players at Kyle Chapman, but many of them will go on to be outstanding players in high school, college, and beyond. Good luck to a great group. The KC 14-year old team, composed of players from Southwest Houston, Bellaire, and West University, met host Port Neches in their first game Friday night. KC lead 2-1 after four innings when, in the fourth inning, Ben Silberman walked, Jeremy Gould singled and stole second base, and Nick Wills singled in both runs. Port Neches took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, a strike out pitch went to the screen allowing the runner to reach first base. A walk, error, and single resulted in three runs that gave the win to Port Neches 4-2. Ross Haggard pitched for KC, and allowed only 1 earned run, 2 hits, struck out 10, and walked only 1. KC had 5 hits in the game. Kyle Chapman's second game was played against Friendswood on Saturday afternoon. Jeremy Gould pitched a masterful six innings for KC giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. The game was scoreless until Friendswood scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Jeremy Gould singled to rightfield to open the inning, and Nick Wills walked. Peter Marshall sacrificed the runners to second and third. Ross Haggard struck out for the second out. On a 3-1 pitch, Eddrick Gilmore homered over the centerfield fence to give KC a 3-2 lead. Alex Atherton retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to give KC the win. Kyle Chapman had to come back and play again Saturday night against Pasadena. For the first time in eight tournament games, KC's defense deserted them, and Pasadena built up a 6-1 lead. KC made another comeback attempt in the seventh inning when Ben Silberman single was followed by two quick outs, and then pinch hitter Michael Torres walked, Raymond Redding was hit by a pitch, and Ross Haggard doubled to deep centerfield making the score 6-4. Braylon Moore grounded out to end the game.
Kyle Chapman PONY-14 wins District 1 championship undefeated & wins Section 3 championship undefeated. Kyle Chapman earned the right to advance to the Region tournament in Port Neches by defeating League City 7-2 Tuesday night in the championship game. This team has now won six straight games in PONY tournament play by scores of 6-1, 12-1, 16-1, 13-1, 3-0, and 7-2. They have outscored the opposition 57-6. Their hitting has been outstanding with the entire lineup contributing. Their fielding has been flawless with very few mistakes. The few errors they have made have come on throwing errors and not fielding errors. Every single player in the lineup is an excellent defensive player, and to single any player out for special praise would be futile. One player, however, has impressed everyone that has seen the games, and has been a huge reason for the success of the KC pitching staff. That player is catcher Nick Wills. From watching him handle the pitchers, you would never know that he hasn’t been catching his entire baseball years. It is easy to see that Nick has the confidence of all the KC pitchers. It is very rare that a ball gets by him, and the pitchers aren’t afraid to throw pitches that are difficult to catch. Ross Haggard is battle tested and leads a very talented pitching staff. It is gratifying to see so many KC fans at the games, …especially those from years past. After League City scored one run in the top of the first, Braylon Moore walked to open the KC first inning. He promptly stole second base, and scored on two errant throws to tie the game. With the score tied 1-1, Alex Atherton clubbed a long 3-run homerun over the left field fence to give KC all they needed to win the game. KC added three more runs in the sixth inning to ice the victory. Gilmore started pitching for KC and pitched 2.1 innings allowing 1 run, 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4. Gould pitched 4.2 innings allowing 1 run, 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 9 including the last 4 batters he faced. Leading hitters for KC were Atherton and Swindell with both going 2 for 3. Silberman, Gould, Marshall, Gilmore, and Redding each had 1 hit. RBI leaders for KC were Atherton with 3, and Swindell, Silberman, and Gilmore with 1 each.
