Waldron gets best draw at tennis sectional
By Jeff Brown

With nothing more than a struggling Triton Central program in its way, Waldron knows it has the best road to the tennis sectional championship match on Friday at Shelbyville.
The pairings for the Shelbyville Sectional were announced Monday with Waldron (10-3) facing Triton Central (0-10) in one semifinal match at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Mohawks defeated the Tigers, 5-0 on April 29.
Triton Central is looking to avoid its second straight winless season. The Tigers have lost 26 consecutive matches.
Defending sectional champion Shelbyville (5-12) also will play at 5 p.m. Thursday against either Southwestern or Morristown.
In the quarterfinal pairing at 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Spartans (4-7) will go for a second win this season over the Yellow Jackets (5-9). Southwestern defeated Morristown, 4-1 on May 4.
"You have to feel pretty good about the draw from the perspective that you're playing a team you're familiar with," said first-year Southwestern coach John Pratt. "We know (Morristown) is a team we've won against."
Pratt doesn't expect round two to go easier than the first one.
"We know we have to come to play if we're going to beat them again," he said. "We can't look beyond them and think about Shelbyville."
Southwestern did not face Shelbyville during the regular season. The Golden Bears hold wins over Morristown (5-0), Waldron (4-1) and Triton Central (5-0).
Shelbyville started the season 2-2 but then lost seven of its next eight matches. And the Golden Bears had been shutout in four of their last five matches until pulling off a 4-1 victory over Rushville on Monday.
The winner of the Shelbyville Sectional advances to the Center Grove Regional to face the winner from the Franklin Central Sectional. The host Flashes, ranked 30th in the state coaches poll, take on Beech Grove, Lutheran and 20th-ranked Roncalli.
All No. 1 singles players and No. 1 doubles teams who remain undefeated at the Shelbyville Sectional advance into the state singles and doubles tournament, also played next week at Center Grove.
