Stan Wilkison spent more than half of the tennis season trying to find the right combination of doubles players for Shelbyville.

The final pairings were successful in their sectional debut Friday against Southwestern. Their play this morning in the sectional championship match against Waldron will be crucial.

Shelbyville, the defending sectional champion, goes for two straight against Waldron at 9 a.m. today. The winner advances to the Center Grove Regional next week.

The Golden Bears (6-12) got to the championship round first with a 5-0 win over the Spartans (5-8).

Shelbyville dropped a total of seven games while dominating the singles matches.

At No. 1 singles, Emily Blain defeated Katelyn Smith, 6-1, 6-2. Blain is 9-11 this season.

Jordan Wise ran her record to 14-6 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Brittany Hamner.

Freshman Maddie Clark produced a strong performance in her sectional debut. At No. 3 singles, she defeated Cheyenne Eversole, 6-1, 6-2.

“I was really pleased how Jordan Wise really picked up her game from the very beginning. And so did Emily Blain,” said Wilkison. “Maddie, being a freshman playing varsity singles, responded really well.”

At No. 1 doubles, Meghan Thornburg and Monica Cooper, who started the season at No. 3 singles, cruised past Brooke Featherston and Sandrina Perkinson, 6-3, 6-0.

Ashley Bush and Paige Durphey defeated Taylor Eversole and Megan Jaynes at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-1.

“Both doubles teams got off to a little slow start, but then really rebounded and battled through the first set and turned it on in the second set,” said Wilkison.

Waldron improved to 11-3 this season with a 5-0 win over Triton Central (0-11).

The only hotly-contested match came at No. 1 singles where Brittany Elliott needed a strong third set to eliminate Gabbie Duncan, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Elliott is 11-3 this season.

Mary Laird received a forfeit at No. 2 singles. And Lauren Harker defeated Anna Belovic at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Emily Wallace and Ellen Forthofer bested Nicole Larkey and Lindsay Crum, 6-3, 6-3.

And at No. 2 doubles, Leanna Harker and Kelly Dalley improved their record to 12-1 this season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Erin Miller and Hunter Eineman.

The only defeat for Harker and Dalley this season came against Shelbyville on April 18. They lost to Shelbyville’s current No. 1 pairing of Thornburg and Clark, 7-5, 6-4.

The doubles matches could prove to be the turning point in today’s championship match.

“The doubles matches will be huge, and the No. 3 singles match will be huge,” said Waldron coach Jim Bramlett, who led the Mohawks to the county tourney championship this season and a second-place finish in the Mid-Hoosier Conference standings. “It will be a competitive match.”

The last time Elliott and Blain played, it went to a super tiebreaker in the third set before Elliott prevailed.

Elliott may need to repeat that performance over a full three sets to get the Mohawks past the Golden Bears.
