Shelbyville sweeps Triton Central in tennis opener

Collecting wins, though, would come easier with some help from its doubles teams.
On Monday, in the season opener for the Golden Bears and the Triton Central Tigers, Shelbyville coach Basem Shammas got a pair of solid performances from its doubles pairings.
The end result was a 5-0 victory over the visiting Tigers — a potential sectional opponent at the end of the season.
"Not too bad for our first match," said Shammas, in his first season as head coach of the girls' program. "There were some jitters. The weather was terrible. But I'm pretty pleased."
While the temperature reached the mid-60s, wind gusts over 30 miles per hour often frustrated the players.
Jordan Wise, 15-7 at No. 2 singles last season, made a successful climb to the top spot this year with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rebecca Silvola. It should be the first of many wins this season for the senior, according to Shammas.
"If she plays up to her potential, she will do very well," said Shammas. "She's smart. She has a good serve and good ground strokes. It's always hard playing the other team's best player but I have a good feeling about her."
In the other singles matches, Monica Cooper dispatched of Anna Belovic, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. And Maddie Clark defeated Michelle Gardner, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
One of Shammas' doubles teams, featuring two returning players, got off to a slow start. The other one, a pairing of two freshmen, cruised to victory.
Marena Drake and Christina Douglas made their varsity tennis debut a successful one with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Erin Miller and Cayla Woodcock.
While the pair has not played doubles before, they are products of the still new Shelbyville Middle School program which is starting to pay dividends at the high school level.
"The middle school program helps a lot," said Shammas. "I've never had the luxury before of getting players with two or three years experience. You don't have to start from scratch with them."
Still, Shammas knows Drake and Douglas are a work in progress as a doubles team.
"I am very pleased with them," he said. "Their ground strokes are very good. They still need some work on their volleys. They've played a lot of singles, so doubles is new to them.
"Their young. They're good friends. They get along very well. I love the way they play together."
Ahead of them are seniors Meghan Thornburg and Paige Durphey. They were 0-6 last year as both were shuttled through with different partners. Now the No. 1 doubles slot is theirs to keep.
On Monday, Triton Central's Lindsey Crum and Brittany Miller got out to an early lead on the Golden Bears, but Thornburg and Durphey rallied to win the first set and rolled through the second set for a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Now the Shelbyville seniors and freshmen have their first doubles wins. A few more could lead to a big season for Shelbyville.
