With a 5-0 win over Morristown, Shelbyville’s tennis program now has victories over two potential sectional opponents.
While it’s way too early to crown the Golden Bears as sectional champions for the second year in a row, Shelbyville is getting strong play at singles while head coach Stan Wilkison puts his newly-created doubles teams on the fast track to success.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Emily Blain, Jordan Wise and Monica Cooper dropped a total of three games to improve Shelbyville to 2-2 this season.
Both doubles matches proved a little more competitive, which was a good sign for Morristown coach Pat Kohne.
“I was real pleased with the doubles teams,” said Kohne. “They’ve been inconsistent so far this season but showed a little better tonight.”
Chelsea Platt and Briley Williams recovered from losing the first set at No. 1 doubles to Shelbyville’s Ashley Bush and Jacqueline Lux to win the second set and force a super tiebreaker.
Bush and Lux prevailed, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-7 despite not playing well, according to Wilkison, who immediately went to work on the court with both of his doubles teams after the match.
Meghan Thornburg and Maddie Clark won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-3 over Julie Rowe and Allison Swinehart.
Shelbyville’s doubles pairings were in just their second match of the season.
“We’re still working on some basic doubles formatting,” explained Wilkison of the post-match workouts. “We’re also trying to implement some new formations to get some easy points in tight matches. And we’re still trying to get them to gel. We have two freshmen that are new to doubles. We’re still trying to get them in the comfort zone.”
Wilkison’s singles players needed little coaching during the match.
Blain bounced back from a tough three-set loss to Waldron’s Brittany Elliott on Monday to defeat Haylea Cook, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Blain is 2-4 this season while Cook remains winless at 0-4.
At No. 2 singles, Wise improved to 4-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sarah Albrecht, who falls to 2-2 this season.
Monica Cooper defeated Jeanie Reuter at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Cooper evened her record at 3-3. Reuter falls to 0-3.
“I was really impressed with the way Emily Blain came back after playing that tight match at Waldron,” said Wilkison. “Jordan Wise has been exceptional all year, and Monica Cooper is finally on her game.”
A pair of convincing wins in mid-April don’t necessarily make sectional champions. They don’t hurt, though.
“Everything looks good on paper,” said Wilkison. “There is a lot of time between now and the postseason.”
