GAME 3

THE SAINTS ENTERED THE
FINAL DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT DETERMINED TO RIGHT UNDESERVED WRONGS.  HOWEVER, BEFORE WE COULD GET TO THE OHIO TITANS, THE SAINTS WOULD HAVE TO DEFEAT THE CLEVELAND MOSQUITOES FOR A SECOND TIME.

LEFTY SCOTT CHISHOLM TOOK THE HILL FOR THE SAINTS.  HE SURVIVED A ROCKY 2ND. INNING TO THROW A GEM.  CHIZ WENT THE DISTANCE, STRIKING OUT 4 AND WALKING 1.  HE GAVE UP 3 RUNS ON 6 HITS, BUT ONLY 2 HITS AFTER THE 2ND.

THE SAINT BATS WERE MORE ACTIVE, WITH CATALYST ANDY BLACKWELL GOING 3 FOR 3, WITH 3 STOLEN BASES.  A KEY BASES LOADED SINGLE BY NATE THIMONS OPENED THE SCORING, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY 2 SECOND INNING RUNS.  THOSE RUNS PROVED TO BE ENOUGH TO SECURE THE 4-3 SAINT VICTORY AND REMATCH WITH THE HOST TIANS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

GAME 4--THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

THE FINAL WAS NO CONTEST, AS THE SAINTS SCORED EARLY AND OFTEN AGAINST THE TITANS.  THE FINAL SCORE OF 6 TO 1.

THE SAINTS BEGAN AFTER A TRIPLE BY ANDY BLACKWELL TO OPEN THE GAME.  ANDY SCORED ON JASON FOREMAN'S SACRIFICE FLY.
A RICK KRIST DOUBLE, FOLLOWED BY A JASON FOREMAN SINGLE AND A JIM JASKOWSKI DOUBLE, LED TO 4 THIRD INNING RUNS.
A JON ZILLES SINGLE SCORED GREG STOKES TO CLOSE OUT THE SAINT SCORING IN THE 4TH.

JOHN ASTFALK WAS PART CAT, PART WIZARD ON THE MOUND.  WHILE FIELDING HIS POSITION MASTERFULLY, HE CRAFTED A 7 INNING 2 HITTER.  HIS LINE WAS 7 INNINGS, 2 HITS, 1 WALK, 7 K'S AND NO RUNS.  MARTY FAGLER AND JOE STUPKA PITCH THE 8TH AND 9TH. INNINGS RESPECTIVELY.  THE TIANS SCORED A HARMLESS TWO OUT RUN IN THE 9TH.

SAINT DESIGNATED HITTER, JIM JASKOWSKI, WHO WENT 5 FOR 11, WITH 3 KEY DOUBLES AND 3 RBI, WAS AWARDED THE TOURNAMENT MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD.

NABF Wrap-up.

St. Johns-Lambros finished a disappointing 4th. at the recently completed NABF Regional Tournament in Youngstown.  Despite outhitting their opponents in each of their four games, the Saints could do no better than 2-2.

The tournament began on a high note Thursday night with an 11-5 victory over Youngstown O'Donald's.  Todd Schiffhauer threw a six-hitter and did not allow an earned run.  The Saints never looked back after scoring 4 in the first and another 3 in the second.  Rick Satcho and Jim Jaskowski were each 3 for 4, while Rick Krist was 2 for 2 and scored 3 runs.  Greg Stokes and Jaskowski each knocked in 3.  Nathan Statzer added a Home Run.

Game 2 was an early morning affair on Friday against the Mid-Maryland Flying Dogs.  The Saints got their wake-up call, while the Dogs did not.  Scott Chisholm tossed a four-hit shut-out, as the Saints pounded out 12 hits and scored 11 times.  The hitting star was Nate Thimons, who went 3 for 4 and knocked in 6 teammates.  Rick Krist also had 3 hits and Jim Jaskowski and Chris Grady each had a pair of RBI.

Game 3 was the biggest disappointment for the Saints, as they dropped an extra-inning game with Buffalo West Herr, 8 to 6.  Despite out hitting Buffalo, a key 6th inning error and 6 walks proved to be too much for the Saints to overcome.  John Bachman pitched a great game despite the walks, and deserved a better fate.
Andy Blackwell and Jeff Martin each had 3 hits, and Martin knocked in 3.  UNfortunately, the Saints stranded 11 runners.

Game 4, Quarter Finals.  The Saints were sent home again this year by the same Cleveland Mosquitoes team that sent them home last year.  Despite repeated tries, the Saints were unable to overcome an early 6-0 Cleveland lead.  Again, the Saints were the victims of leaving runners on base, this time they left 13 runners aboard.  Four Excellent Cleveland pitchers proved to be too much to overcome.  Chris Grady went 3 for 4 and Jim Jaskowski 2 for 5 for the Saints, who again pounded out double digit hits as a team.  Eric McGough threw 4 strong innings in relief to keep the game within reach.  The Saints were able to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th., with one out, but Cleveland brought in their ace who got 2 strike outs to end the game.

Cleveland eventually won the Tournament, defeating Buffalo 5-2 on Sunday.

We would like to thank Chris Grady, Jeff Martin, Brandon Whitfield, Joe Zupcic, and Brandon Federici for joining us at Youngstown.

The Saints concluded their season with a record of 33-3-1.
Jason Foreman drove a single to leftfield with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. inning to score Nathan Statzer with the Championship clinching run, as St. Johns-Lambros completed a 3-0 series sweep of a gallant South Hills team.

The Saints rallied from 6-0 and 7-1 deficits, to take a 9-7 lead into the ninth.  South Hills rallied to tie the game and threatened to take the lead with bases loaded and 1 out.  However,  Jonathan Smith got a ground ball that Statzer turned into an inning ending double play.

Statzer cracked a one out double in the ninth.  With two outs, Ricky Krist walked, which was followed by Foreman's RBI single.

Greg Stokes had 3 hits and 3 RBI, while Andy Blackwell, Foreman,
Rick Satcho, Jim Jaskowski, Nate Thimons, Mike Hermann, and Nate Statzer had 2 hits each.

Adam Hahn pitched into the 9th. inning, while Jonathan Smith picked up the victory.

St. Johns-Lambros pounded out 13 hits and scored 7 times to defeated South Hills, 7-1 in the 2nd. Game of the Championship Series.  The Saints are now 1 win away from their 5th Federation League championship in the last 7 years.

Scott Chisholm struck out 8, while yielding a single run on 5 hits.

Rick Satcho had 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in another.  Jim Jaskowski, Greg Stokes, Andy Blackwell and Jason Foreman, all had 2 hits apiece.  Jim Jaskowski had 2 RBI, while Satcho, Blackwell, Nate Thimons, and Stokes each had an RBI.

The Saints look to wrap up the series Saturday @ 1 when they host Game 3 at Leech Farm.  Adam Hahn will be the Saints starting pitcher.  Greg Marshall is expected to start for South Hills.
