NABF Wrap-up.

Posted by Tom McCarthy on Aug 15 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
St. Johns-Lambros finished a disappointing 4th. at the recently completed NABF Regional Tournament in Youngstown.  Despite outhitting their opponents in each of their four games, the Saints could do no better than 2-2.

The tournament began on a high note Thursday night with an 11-5 victory over Youngstown O'Donald's.  Todd Schiffhauer threw a six-hitter and did not allow an earned run.  The Saints never looked back after scoring 4 in the first and another 3 in the second.  Rick Satcho and Jim Jaskowski were each 3 for 4, while Rick Krist was 2 for 2 and scored 3 runs.  Greg Stokes and Jaskowski each knocked in 3.  Nathan Statzer added a Home Run.

Game 2 was an early morning affair on Friday against the Mid-Maryland Flying Dogs.  The Saints got their wake-up call, while the Dogs did not.  Scott Chisholm tossed a four-hit shut-out, as the Saints pounded out 12 hits and scored 11 times.  The hitting star was Nate Thimons, who went 3 for 4 and knocked in 6 teammates.  Rick Krist also had 3 hits and Jim Jaskowski and Chris Grady each had a pair of RBI.

Game 3 was the biggest disappointment for the Saints, as they dropped an extra-inning game with Buffalo West Herr, 8 to 6.  Despite out hitting Buffalo, a key 6th inning error and 6 walks proved to be too much for the Saints to overcome.  John Bachman pitched a great game despite the walks, and deserved a better fate.
Andy Blackwell and Jeff Martin each had 3 hits, and Martin knocked in 3.  UNfortunately, the Saints stranded 11 runners.

Game 4, Quarter Finals.  The Saints were sent home again this year by the same Cleveland Mosquitoes team that sent them home last year.  Despite repeated tries, the Saints were unable to overcome an early 6-0 Cleveland lead.  Again, the Saints were the victims of leaving runners on base, this time they left 13 runners aboard.  Four Excellent Cleveland pitchers proved to be too much to overcome.  Chris Grady went 3 for 4 and Jim Jaskowski 2 for 5 for the Saints, who again pounded out double digit hits as a team.  Eric McGough threw 4 strong innings in relief to keep the game within reach.  The Saints were able to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th., with one out, but Cleveland brought in their ace who got 2 strike outs to end the game.

Cleveland eventually won the Tournament, defeating Buffalo 5-2 on Sunday.

We would like to thank Chris Grady, Jeff Martin, Brandon Whitfield, Joe Zupcic, and Brandon Federici for joining us at Youngstown.

The Saints concluded their season with a record of 33-3-1.
