Chapin Battles Tough Competition to Finish Third at Military Duals; Cole Haile Earns Most Outstanding Wrestler Award

On January 15-16, the Chapin Eagles hosted the Military Duals tournament at Chapin High School. The 11-team tournament featured teams from throughout South Carolina. Lead by the upper weight (152 pounds and above) Most Outstanding Wrestler Cole Haile who registered a 6-0 record, all wins by pin, the Eagles fought to a third place finish. This was made more impressive because Chapin forfeited one weight on Saturday because of an injury.

Friday saw Chapin finish the first day’s competition with two victories and one loss. The Eagles started competition by defeating Nation Ford 42-29. Haile started the match with a pin and was followed by consecutive pins Grant Frick, Nick Edenfield, and Hank Manos, which provided a commanding 24-0 advantage. Nation Ford cut the lead to 24-9; then, Dylan Whitcomb, Paul Collingwood, and Cole Hodges answered with a pin and two decisions, respectively, to build a 36-9 lead. Jake Watson ended Chapin’s scoring with a pin, and the Eagles emerged with a 42-29 victory.

Chapin then faced the Boiling Springs Bulldogs, who had given the Eagles their only loss of the season to date. Boiling Springs had surged to a 12-0 lead when Manos got the Eagles on the board with a decision. Even though Chapin fought gamely, the Bulldogs continued to earn wins and built a 28-3 lead. The Eagles responded by receiving a forfeit and pins by Hodges and Cabe to cut the deficit to 28-21. Chapin dropped the next four bouts, and Haile ended the match with a pin and the Eagles succumbed 52-27.

Chapin bounced back to defeat York 44-31. Manos began the match with a pin and a 6-0 lead. With Chapin up 6-4, the Eagles won 5 of the next six bouts to extend the lead to 32-7. Noel Hurley recorded a technical fall; Whitcomb, Hodges, and Kyle Nichols won by pin and Cabe earned a decision. AJ Spearman and Haile closed Chapin’s scoring with pins.

The Eagles started Saturday’s competition with a 54-24 victory over Dutch Fork. The Eagles combined 3 forfeits and pins by Hodges and Nichols to build a 30-0 advantage. Watson, Spearman, Haile strung together two decisions and a pin to build a 42-6 lead. Hurley ended Chapin’s scoring and the match with a pin.

Chapin then entered the Top-4 round of competition and faced Rock Hill. The Bearcats proved too strong and handed the Eagles their third loss of the season, 42-24. Collingwood began the match with a pin and Cabe earned a decision to stake the Eagles to a 9-3 lead. Spearman, Haile, and Edenfield provided a decision and two pins and the Eagles closed the gap to 27-24. However, that was the end to Chapin’s scoring and Rock Hill prevailed.

The final match of the tournament featured Chapin and a tough Westwood squad battling for Third Place honors. Cabe earned a major decision to put the Eagles on the board. Trailing 11-4, Dalton Pierce pinned his opponent and Chapin received a forfeit to regain the lead at 16-11. With Eagles trailing 17-16, Haile registered his sixth pin of the tournament to put Chapin in front 22-17. Westwood battled back to take a 27-22 advantage. Manos cut the lead to 27-25 with a decision. Following a Chapin forfeit, Hurley closed the deficit to 33-31 with a pin. Westwood forfeited to Collingwood and the match ended in a 37-37 tie. Chapin prevailed to win in the tiebreaker.

Chapin wins Six to Finish Third
at the Wildcat Duals

The Chapin Eagles posted a 6-1 record to earn a third-place finish in the 14-team field at the December 29-30 event. The six victories included wins over Summerville, Lugoff-Elgin, White Knoll and Fort Dorchester, all 4A schools that were ranked in the top 20.

The inaugural match against Summerville ended in a nail-biting victory for Chapin. After spotting the Green Wave a 3-0 lead, the Eagles responded with pins by Dylan Whitcomb, Paul Collingwood, and Cole Hodges to build an 18-3 lead. Taylor Cabe also pinned his opponent, which gave Chapin a 24-9 advantage. Summerville surged to tie the match at 24, but Cole Haile delivered a pin and the Eagles were back on top 30-24. The Green Wave refused to yield and regained the lead 33-30 with two bouts remaining. Hank Manos’ pin put the Eagles back in the lead 36-33. With the match in the balance, Sam LaRosa never quit fighting and sealed the Chapin win at 42-33 with a third-period pin.

Match 2 was between Chapin and powerful tournament runner-up Boiling Springs. Cory Bianco and Nick Edenfield provided 12 of the Eagles points with pins, but the Bulldogs were too strong and handed the Eagle’s their first defeat of the season 49-24.

The Eagles responded by closing out Day 1 with victories over Gilbert, 75-6, and Greenville, 52-24. In the Gilbert match, LaRosa, Noel Hurley, Collingwood, Kyle Nichols, Cabe, and Haile registered pins and Manos logged a 5-2 decision. Against Greenville in contested bouts, Hodges, Cabe, and Dalton Pierce pinned their respective opponents and Nichols notched a major decision 17-4.

The second day’s competition began with a match against White Knoll. After Chapin spotted White Knoll a 6-0 lead with an opening-bout forfeit, Haile cut the lead in half by winning a decision in the third overtime period. Haile’s gritty, never-quit attitude inspired his teammates to register 3 pins by Edenfield, Manos, and Hurley and a forfeit to give Chapin a 33-6 advantage. Collingwood then recorded a major decision followed by decisions by Hodges and Cabe to extend the Eagles lead to 43-12 and put the match out of reach. Chapin closed the competition by yielding two forfeits and earned a 49-24 victory.

The final match of pool competition pitted Chapin against Lugoff-Elgin (LE). Haile again got the Eagles started by pinning his opponent to provide the Eagles with a 6-0 lead. LE had battled back to put Chapin behind 12-6 when Manos initiated 6 consecutive victories by pinning his opponent. Chapin’s onslaught also included pins by LaRosa, Whitcomb, Collingwood, and Hodges and a decision by Hurley, which resulted in the Eagle’s retaking the lead 39-12. LE closed the gap to 39-33 with one bout remaining, but A. J. Spearman ended the comeback hopes with a pin to give Chapin a 44-33 victory that gave the Eagles the opportunity to wrestle for third place.

The Eagles battled Fort Dorchester for third-place honors. Trailing 0-3, Manos again put the Eagles on the board with a pin and a 6-3 lead. With Fort Dorchester ahead 9-6, Chapin strung together 5 victories including pins by Hurley, Whitcomb, and Collingwood, a forfeit, and a major decision Cabe to put the Eagles back on top 34-9. However, Fort Dorchester would not go quietly. The Patriots narrowed Chapin’s lead to 34-33 with one bout to go. As he started the day’s competition with a win for the Eagles, Cole Haile sealed third place for Chapin with a pin to end the match 40-33.

Individually, the Chapin grapplers posted a record of 60-32, which included 5 wrestlers, Collingwood, Hodges, Cabe, Haile, and Manos, who completed the tournament with 6 victories and 1 loss. The Eagles will resume Region competition on Wednesday, January 6 when they visit the Richland Northeast Cavaliers.
