ALUMNI UPDATE: THE LATEST JESSI NEWS

Posted by Czar Bloom at Oct 4, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Jessi Rivera (Class of '01) continues to improve in her freshman season at Messiah College near Harrisburg, Pa. She's currently sixth on the team. She earned her college best just recently with a stellar 19:37 as Messiah put eight girls under 20 - three under 19. Whoa! She looks to battle in her conference race this weekend at Messiah. At the Davis and Elkins Invitational in West Virginia Sept. 15, she took 8th overall as her team took six of the top eight spots to win. "The course was unreal," said Jessi, who ran a 22:18. "The hills were out of control. We also splashed through two knee deep streams and jumped over logs along the course." The next weekend at home in the Messiah Invitational, Jessi ran a 21:17, placing 13th out of 120 as the team won again. Finally, last weekend at the Dickison Invitational, teams ran two races - a 4K and a 6K. Scores from the top three finishers from each race were added together for team scores. Jessi set a cross country PR with a 15:47 (in a 4K, that is) finishing 13th out of 186. Stay tuned for more updates, y'all! :)
MHSCC varsity ladies Amy Mallamo, Brigid O'Neill and Megan Pastor kicked some butt at the corn maze Thursday afternoon, scorching the 5-acre trail in just over four minutes. The trio scooped up 20 numbers (about 5 per minute) en route to shattering the coaches' record of 13 numbers in about 14 minutes last year. Chris Morton's group came in second (I think) while the coaches couldn't even come close, staying lost in the corn for most of the afternoon. We got our numbers before dark, though. Congrats to Keith Short, Joey Palumbo and Brandon Miller who started the day, winning the warm-up sprint from start to finish.
Fourteen runners scored career-best times, including six who made the Top 15, as the Bucs cruised to an exciting performance Wednesday at the Tidewater Classic in Salisbury. Chad Carpenter took an overall win, while Keith Short, Stuart Barr, Scott Hall and Justin Bloom joined him in the Top 20 to help the boys to the team championship with 54 points. Twenty-four teams and 185 runners competed. For the girls, Amy Mallamo and Lindsay Kenton scored Top 15 trophies to help the girls to a 4th-place finish out of 22 teams and 133 runners. Amy Mallamo and Chad Carpenter each took individual wins although Dover toppled the Bucs at home Wednesday. The Dover boys won, 22-35, while the girls won, 24-37. Lindsay Kenton had a solid performance as did Amanda Meade and Zerphlee Watson who each earned a season-best time. For the boys, both Scott Hall, Brandon Miller and Chris Morton each ran season-best times. For complete results and more pictures, click on the above headline!

BUCS IMPROVE, BUT CAN'T SHAKE CR

Posted by Czar Bloom at Sep 25, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Despite more than half the team earning season or career-best times, the Bucs couldn't shake Caesar Rodney at home Wednesday. The CR boys packed in a 20-39 win, while the CR girls took control, 16-47. In the boys race, junior Keith Short and freshman Stuart Barr challenged CR's pack and settled for career-best times in the 18s after Chad Carpenter took the overall win. Scott Hall, Jon Wyman, Brandon Miller and Joey Palumbo rounded out the varsity 7, while Chris Demby, Nick Creasey, Matt Oliver and Brandon Rogers earned career-best times. Ben Smith and Chris Battaglia scored season-best times. For the girls, Amy Mallamo earned her home-course best with a 21:40 while Lindsay Kenton, Jessica Fitzpatrick, Kourtney Short, Megan Pastor, Mallory Littleton, Amber Zedney, Brigid O'Neill, Rosie Seagraves, Ashley Zimmerman and Maire O'Neill came up with personal bests.
