Cards Fall in Finale 5-3

(Mentor, Oh)  In the Canfield Cardinals last regular season game the Cards were plagued by the same problem they have fought with the entire season, penalties.  The Cards were whistled for 17 infractions in a 5-3 loss against Notre Dame Cathedral Latin.  Down 4-1 heading into the third period Riley Emery scored twice to make it close at 4-3, until NDCL would score an empty goal with :56 seconds left in the game.  Scott Sittig scored the other Cardinal goal, while Max Siegle dished out two assists and Joe Geiser, Dan Johns, and Dylan Kuffel also added assists.  Canfield ends the regular season 10-14 and 3-7 in the GCHSHL Blue South division.  The Cards will play at Kent in the State secional tournament begining February 17th.
(Boardman, Oh)  After being shutout by Bay Village 5-0 Friday night the Canfield Cardinals hockey team took a 4-2 lead into the third period Saturday afternoon, and committed 7 penalties in the third period against Orange to wind up on the short end of a 5-4 loss. Scott Sittig led Canfield with 2 goals and an assist, Riley Emery and Joe Geiser each had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Buchenic added an assist.  Canfield is now 3-6 in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue South division and 9-13 overall.  The Cards play Brush High School in a non-league game at the Ice Zone Sunday at 1p.m.

Riley Emery is now 3 points away from tying the school record for points in a season (22g, 16 a), held by Andy Davis, while Joe Geiser is 3 goals away from tying the record for most goals in a season held by Sam Crowe at 26.  The Cards as a team are 10 goals away from tying an all time season record for scoring. The Cards have 84 goals on the season.  Last years team 2007-08 and 2003-04 (Davis and Crowe's record year) hold that mark at 94.  On the down side of records, the Cards set the all time penalty minutes record for a season currently at 396 pms. Canfield has two regular season games plus state playoffs left in the campaign.
(Boardman, Oh) Canfield Sophomores Riley Emery and Joe Geiser each set single season scoring marks in a 10-2 win over Brush in non-division Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League action at the Ice Zone Sunday.  Emery broke Andy Davis' total points record (2003-2004 season) of 41, with three goals and three assists to bring his season total to 44 (25g, 19 a).  Geiser scored 5 goals to bring his season total to 28 surpassing Sam Crowe's mark of 26 (2003-2004).  Max Siegle added two goals for the Cards now 10-13 on the season.  Nick Carney assisted on 4 goals, Steve Stanislaw and Scott Sitiig picked up 2 assists, and Tyler Buchenic, Dylan Kuffel, Adam Scheetz, Dan Johns, Siegle, and Geiser each added one assist.  Chris Vouvalis was the winning goalie with 14 saves.  The Cardinals travel to Mentor next Sunday to take on Notre Dame Cathedral Latin in the final GCHSHL Blue South division game for Canfield.

The Cardinals still have a chance to make the playoffs for the 2008-09 campaign, but will most likely need to win out and hope that NDCL is upset by Garfield Hts. or  Midview.  The Cards are two games behind NDCL and play them Feb. 7th at Mentor.  Canfield has a large task this Friday (Jan 30) taking on Bay Village who come into the contest 7-0-1 in GCHSHL Blue South play.  The lone tie came Sunday against NDCL. Canfield is riding a hot streak with victories in 3 of the last 4 games with the one loss coming in o.t. to Mooney/Ursuline. Canfield has never finished with a winning record in league play, coming close in 2006-07 at 6-6 in the division. The Cards are also shooting for most wins in a season also by the 2006-07 team with 13. This year Canfield is 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the GCHSHL Blue South,  with 4 regular season games plus state playoffs to play. The Cards will honor seniors Saturday (Jan 31) vs Orange at Noon (Ice Zone) and Sunday will play Brush in a non-league game at 1p.m. Sophomore, Riley Emery,  is closing in on the single season record for points in a season (41) held by Andy Davis 2003-04.  Emery has 36 points, 21 goals and 15 assists.  Also, sophomore, Joe Geiser and Emery are closing in on goals scored in a season (26) currently held by Sam Crowe 2003-04.  Geiser has 22. All games this weekend are at the Ice Zone.  Canfield students are admitted free to all games.

Still In The Hunt with 8-3 Win at Garfield

(Garfield Hts., Oh) The Canfield Cardinals won a key Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue South Division contest over Garfield Hts. 8-3, Saturday night.  Riley Emery led the charge with 4 goals and 2 assists while Joe Geiser scored two, Scott Sittig and Tyler Buchenic added a goal apiece.  Nick Carney picked up three assists for the Cards, Sittig had two and Geiser 1.  The Cards are in a second place tie in the GCHSHL Blue South (3-4, 9-11 overall) with Garfield (3-4),  Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (3-2), and Midview (3-4) all with 6 points, and the final Baron Cup playoff spot up for grabs.  Canfield will take on Bay Village (7-0, 23-3-1) next Friday at the Ice Zone game time 6:30 p.m.
