Post Season Notes...Sittig in spotlight

Posted by Randy Emery at Feb 27, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

(Canfield, Oh) Canfield Varsity Hockey Head Coach Randy Emery announced that junior, Scott Sittig,  has been named captain for next season.  Emery says, "Scott's leadership is shown on and off the ice.  He has a purpose every time he steps out there and plays with controlled aggressiveness.  Scott is the leader for this team, and I know his teammates agree.  Sittig just started playing hockey in his freshman year at the developmental level.  In his sophomore year he made himself noticed for his unrelenting hustle especially on the forecheck."  Sittig was third on the team this year with 14 goals, second with 16 assists, and third in overall scoring with 30 points and just 12 penalty minutes.

This week on Armstrong Cable channel 20's Bottom Line ,Scott Sittig and Coach Emery appear in a pre taped interview last Friday from the foyer of the Canfield High School gymnasium. Sittig discusses his agressive attack on the forecheck and Coach Emery talks about the state of high schoool hockey in the Mahoning Valley.  Also appearing are Canfield Athletic Director Greg Cooper,  basketball standout Jill Halfhill, cheerleader Gina Gelonese, and football coach Mike Pavlansky. Check local listings for times of the "Bottom Line" sports show.

Thursday, March 5th the Canfield Hockey Cardinals will hold their annual end of season banquet at A La Carte Catering on Lisbon St. in Canfield.

09-10 Blue South To Remain Intact

Posted by Randy Emery at Feb 15, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
(Cleveland, Oh)  The Blue South division in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League will reamain the same for next season.  Canfield, Bay, NDCL, Midview, Garfield Hts., and Orange will again compete for a place in the Baron Cup playoffs for next season.  The Blue South is considered the medium division of the Blue, as the GCHSHL annually realigns the division based on predicted competitiveness.

(Kent, Oh)  The Canfield Cardinals, 20th seed (10-14),  will take on the Cleveland Heights Tigers,  17th seed (3-19-1),  on Tuesday February 17th  8p.m., at the  Kent District hockey tournament.  The two teams have never met in the 9 years Canfield has been a state sanctioned hockey program.  The Tigers are in the Blue North Division of the GCHSHL and finished 7th in that division at 1-11.  The Cards finished in a fourth place tie in the Blue South division (3-7) of the GCHSHL.   The winner will take on the number one seed, University School (22-6-3).  The Cards will be without the services of forward Joe Geiser (28 goals, 9 assists) and defenseman Nick Carney (1-13), both serving game disqualifications carried over from the Cardinals last regular season game in a 5-3 loss against NDCL.

Canfield has already broken the season scoring record of 94 goals (2003-04 and 2007-08) now set at 97.
