Big League Weekend for Cards

Posted by Randy Emery at Dec 1, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
(Canfield,Oh) The Canfield Cardinals (2-2) will have two tough tasks this weekend as Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue South action begins with a home game against NDCL (3-1) Friday and road trip to Auburn to face Orange (4-0) Saturday.   NDCL, coming off a Canfield Thanksgiving Tournament win looks to continue their dominance over the Cards.  Canfield is 0-10 lifetime against NDCL, however several close games have taken place in recent years.  Orange is off to a great start as they won the Parma Thanksgiving tournament with wins over Aurora, Parma, and two wins over Bay Village. Canfield will need goalie Roger Geiser to be tough in the pipes as he faced 52 shots against NDCL in a 7-2 tournament loss last weekend.  Riley Emery (5), Joe Geiser (4), and Scott Sittig(4) provided much of the offense for Canfield in the tournament, however penalties hampered the Cards, as they played short handed most of the weekend.  The puck drops at 6:30p.m. Friday at the Ice Zone , and 7:30p.m. at the Pond in Auburn Saturday.

Canfield Hockey Season Preview 2009-10

In the upcoming 2009-10 Canfield High School hockey season, the Cardinals look to improve upon an 11-15 record from last season, which saw the Cards set a team record for goal scoring at 101 goals scored, with most of that offense returning. Other highlights this season include the Cards hosting the annual Canfield Thanksgiving tournament with rivals, Mooney/Ursuline, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy coming to the Ice Zone November 27 and 28.  The team will also celebrate a 10 year anniversary since being admitted to the OHSAA with an alumni reception to be held January 2, 2010, after the Canfield/Midview game at the Ice Zone. Canfield senior captain Scott Sittig returns for his 3rd season.  Sittig registered 14 goals and 16 assists last year and continues to be a force on the fore check from the wing position.  Assistant captains are juniors Riley Emery (30g 21a) and Nick Carney (1g, 13a). Emery was a second team forward in the GCHSHL Blue South Division last year, and is chasing Zach Kovacs career scoring mark for Canfield needing 42 points to tie Kovacs.  Carney has been a solid and steady defender on the Cardinal blue line and battles tough in the corners.   Also returning this season are brothers,  junior forward Joe Geiser and sophomore goaltender Roger Geiser.  Joe amassed 28 goals and 10 assists last year and hustles the whole ice.  Roger is the backstop for the Cards.  He was named first team all Blue South Division and honorable mention all Blue Division. Roger stopped 90 percent of shots faced and held the Cards in games most of the season.Slick skating junior forward Bryan Clark, sophomores Ryan O’Hara (forward) and Sean Meditz (defenseman) look to make a bigger impact this year, as each showed great promise last season. Junior Chris Vouvalis backs up Geiser in the net. Newcomers this year include juniors Tyler English, Kyle Bassett, and John Shaughnessy, Sophomores Adam Scheetz, Scott Schilling, Kasey Conricote, and Steven Ferko.  Freshmen Mike Booker and Josh Tancer round out the varsity squad.

Head coach Randy Emery is in his 3rd season at the helm of the Cardinals, and points to a couple key factors in this years potential success. “We have to stay disciplined, play solid from our net out, and score timely goals to stay competitive in the GCHSHL Blue South.  Our team goal will be to put forth our best effort every time on the ice.  We want to continue building our hockey program with quality student athletes who love to play the game.”  Emery’s assistants are Paul Barnes and Steve Denney.  Former head coach Joe Villano is the goalie consultant and Dr. Joe Ethen is the team doctor.
