Lions sweep Westland Comets in home opener

Posted by Roger Peterson at Sep 17, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

All three Lions football teams remained undefeated with big victories on Sunday.

The Canton Lions Freshmen Team improved their season record to 3-0 with a dominant 26-6 performance over the Westland Comets. The Lions opened up and early 19-0 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to the strong running of Antonio Dumas and Cordell Gibson who each found the end zone. The Lions were led by strong blocking from Alex Petrarca, Eric Daniels, and Daniel Paulot. The Lions defense was impressive again behind the solid play of Ty Jasman, Jakob Wickens, Daniel Kilgore, Allante' Wheeler, and Luke Edwards.

The Canton Lions JV squad downed the Westland Comets 45-0. The Lions returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown (Malcolm Hollingsworth). In addition, the offensive line had a major impact on the outcome of the remainder of the game with excellent blocking skills displayed by Luke Denzer, Daniel Tidwell, Danny Stropes, Scott Gring, and Daniel Jipping. Rushing touchdowns were scored by Jamarl Eiland, Nathan Emminger, Kyle Durham, and Kenneth Arnold.  Emminger also added a pass reception on a PAT, along with Lucas Bunting providing a good kick for a PAT. The defensive shutout was preserved by stellar play from Collin Hall, Tyler Searls, Westen Price, Nathan Emminger, and Kenneth Arnold.

The Canton Lions Varsity team got their third victory of the season by defeating the Westland Comets 18-0, in a hard fought contest. The Lions Marcus Houston opened the scoring with a run of 41 yards. DJ McMillan made it 12-0 just before halftime when he caught a pass, broke three tackles and raced into the end zone. The Lions Clay Behrman completed the scoring for the Lions with a 2 yard run early in the third quarter. The Lions recorded their first shutout of the season with strong defensive play from William Askew III, Zach Smilo, Blake Owens, and Matthew Harris.

The Jr. Freshman Canton Lions were involved in a high scoring game against the Westland Comets.  The running game was fueled by strong blocking from Scottlar Chakarbarty, George Jablonski, and Jack Underwood, resulting in touchdown runs from Jason Arnold, Spencer Brown, Kyle Burnette, and Ray Bunting.  The defense outplayed a bigger Comet team with strong play from Trevor LaPere and Devon Farmer, who forced a key fumble late in the game.
