News and Announcements

The EFA boys varsity soccer team got thier unofficial season off to a nice start with a 4-0 shutout of Watkins Glen.

The Devils rebounded from a slow start as they came out a bit flat on both sides of the ball.  Watkins Glen even mangaged to strike the crossbar on a shot from outside the 18-yard box after the Devils' defense was caught a bit flat.  However, that shot seemed to wake EFA up as senior Kevyn Rustici put the Devils on top as the received a perfect throughball from sophomore Charlie Anderson and beat the Watkins Glen keeper at the near post to give EFA the lead.  Senior Joe Barbaro would double the lead at 2-0 a few minutes later as he cleaned up a deflected shot on the far post and slotted a right-footed shot home past the diving WG keeper.

The second half saw the Devils begin to take form as they methodically moved the ball around the back third involving Bobby McGinnis' feet.  Cory Hill, Hunter Reed, Tommy Hornbuckle, Mike Chrabazcz, and Mike McGinnis consistantly found the open man as they patiently waited for an open midfielder to move the ball forward.  Anderson would add his second assist of the game on a lovely throughball to senior Alan Barton who calmly knocked the ball past the Watkins Glen keeper on the breakaway to give EFA a 3-0 lead.  Ten minutes later, senior Joey Burin found junior Matt Cascio streaking down the right side from his outside midfield position.  Burin provided him with a nice lead pass that Cascio would eventually provide a beatiful cross to sophomore Denzel Harris who headed the ball out of the air and into the side net at the far post to finish the scoring off for EFA with a 4-0 lead.

Bobby McGinnis turned away all eight of Watkins Glen's shots on goal for the shutout.  He was only tested a couple times, but came up big when needed.

EFA next scrimmages Bath-Haverling on Thursday, August 23rd at 4:00 pm behind EFA before they begin their regular season against Horseheads on Saturday.

Forward Carl Learned and defender Ryan Bordinger have been accepted to Keuka College in Penn Yan, New York and will continue thier fine soccer careers playing for the Green Storm. Learned finished the 2006 EFA season with 5 goals and 5 assists in 19 games played for the Blue Devils. He was named to the All-STAC West Division Team as well as the STAC Senior Showcase. Carl's great speed provided EFA with numerous scoring opportunities throughout his time with the Blue Devils and was named captain his Senior season. Bordinger anchored a defensive core for the Blue Devils. Ryan played center back for EFA and put a plug in many scoring opportunities for the opposition. Ryan's led a defense that recorded 5 shutouts throughout the course of the season including a 1-0 win over Owego to earn EFA's first Class "A", Sectional Title in 17 years. Ryan also contributed 2 assists to the scoring column. Bordinger was named to the All-STAC West Division Team as well as to the STAC Senior Showcase. Bordinger was a captain his senior season. Tyler Sampsell will attempt to walk-on to the University of St. Bonaventure's soccer team as he has recieved an academic scholorship to attend the Division I university. Tyler was also a captain his senior year at Elmira Free Academy as he played in all 19 games at the central midfield position. Tyler tallied 3 goals and 3 assists on the season and was a defensive plug in the center of the field. These three players will be greatly missed from the EFA Soccer family; however, we wish them the best of luck throughout the rest of thier chosen careers. Good luck boys!!image
June 15, 2007 Post Comment By Al Losey alosey@stargazette.com Star-Gazette Repeat winners dominated the conversation in downtown Elmira on Thursday afternoon at a luncheon celebrating the best of the year's high school sports accomplishments. The Star-Gazette and Kiwanis Club presented their female athlete of the year and girls team coach of the year awards to the same people during the groups' annual awards ceremony at the Holiday Inn-Riverview. Notre Dame High School senior Margie McKinery received the Star-Gazette's All-Twin Tiers Female Athlete of the Year award, which goes to the top female athlete in the paper's circulation area. In addition, she was named the Kiwanis Club's Female Athlete of the Year, an award that encompasses the five Chemung County schools. McKinery, who won both awards last year, led the Notre Dame girls soccer team in scoring, was named New York State Class C Player of the Year in basketball for the second straight year, and helped the Notre Dame softball team win the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division 1 title. She will attend Niagara University. Joining her as a repeat winner was her basketball coach, Robert Kelly, who received awards as the top girls team coach from both groups after guiding the Crusaders to back-to-back state Class C championships. Kelly shared the Star-Gazette Girls Team Coach of the Year award last year. Waverly senior Colin McDonald, who excelled in football, wrestling and baseball, took home the Star-Gazette All-Twin Tiers Male Athlete of the Year award. The two-time state wrestling champion finished second in the state in Division II this year at 171 pounds, was a Star-Gazette All-Twin Tiers pick in football, and the starting shortstop and a pitcher on Waverly's IAC Division 1 champion baseball team. He will attend Cornell University and wrestle for the Big Red. The Kiwanis Club Male Athlete of the Year was Horseheads football player Luke Herrington, who had a record-setting career as a running back and was a hard-hitting linebacker for the Blue Raiders. He'll take his talents to St. John Fisher College in the fall. The Star-Gazette and Kiwanis Club honored two other coaches of the year. Corning East football coach Randy Holden was named the Star-Gazette's Boys Team Coach of the Year. Holden, who announced this week he is stepping down after 21 seasons as East's head coach, led the 13-0 Trojans to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A title. East was the first team in the Elmira-Corning area to win a state championship in football. The Kiwanis Club named Elmira Free Academy boys soccer coach Derek Hamilton its Boys Team Coach of the Year. Hamilton guided the Blue Devils to the Section 4 Class A championship, the team's first sectional title in 17 years. Two other Kiwanis Club awards were presented. Horseheads senior Chris Zelko won the Harp O'Donnell Baseball Award as the top high school baseball player in Chemung County, and Notre Dame junior Emily Pautz won the Junker Johnston Award as the county's best softball player. Zelko, a right-handed pitcher who is headed to La Salle University and will play baseball for the Explorers, showed up with a sling on his non-pitching arm. He had surgery on the left shoulder from an injury suffered during the basketball season. Pautz was represented by her mother but sent a handwritten message that her mom read. The high school junior wrote that she was probably in the middle of the New York State Regents test for math as the awards were being handed out, so she hoped the group would accept her excuse. Outgoing Kiwanis Club President Mike Wayne ended his remarks as the meeting closed by saying: "This meeting shows us that not only are there great athletes in this area, but that these same athletes are great scholars and citizens as well. We wish them well." image

CHAMPIONS!!!!

Posted by Derek Hamilton at Mar 15, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
EFA-3 used timely scoring and fantastic goal-keeping to down a physical Campbell-Savona to win the 2007 YMCA Indoor Soccer Championship. Campbell-Savona, consisting of mostly 17 and 18 year old Varsity soccer players, brought a physical style of play to the court as they were consistantly whistled for fouls and altercations. However, cooler heads would prevail as EFA-3 kept their composure and moved the ball around the pitch in the fashion the game was supposed to be played. The Devils knocked the ball around finding open men and kept Campbell-Savona running around expending valuble energy ball-chasing. Ross Holden would open the scoring for EFA-3 as he picked-off a sloppy Campbell-Savona and converted to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. However, C-S would equalize before the intermission to head into halftime tied at 1-1. The second half was much of the same story. Holden again scored for EFA-3 to give them a 2-1 lead and then notch a 3rd goal for the 3-1 upperhand. Charlie Anderson and Paul Bradley provided the assists on the 2nd and 3rd goals, but again C-S would score a late goal to pull them to within one at 3-2. However, Nick Grasso would not be denied a championship as he consistantly stoned Campbell-Savona scoring opportunities time and time again to preserve the victory for EFA-3. EFA finished the season with a 8-1-3 record and a Championship trophy to be placed in the trophy case at Elmira Free Academy. As if this past season wasn't pleasing enough for EFA Soccer, it's apparent that with the play of these young men, it's apparent the the future of EFA Soccer is looking bright as well.
