EFA Downs Watkins Glen 4-0 in Preseason Match

Posted by Derek Hamilton on Aug 20 2007 at 05:00PM PDT

The EFA boys varsity soccer team got thier unofficial season off to a nice start with a 4-0 shutout of Watkins Glen.

The Devils rebounded from a slow start as they came out a bit flat on both sides of the ball.  Watkins Glen even mangaged to strike the crossbar on a shot from outside the 18-yard box after the Devils' defense was caught a bit flat.  However, that shot seemed to wake EFA up as senior Kevyn Rustici put the Devils on top as the received a perfect throughball from sophomore Charlie Anderson and beat the Watkins Glen keeper at the near post to give EFA the lead.  Senior Joe Barbaro would double the lead at 2-0 a few minutes later as he cleaned up a deflected shot on the far post and slotted a right-footed shot home past the diving WG keeper.

The second half saw the Devils begin to take form as they methodically moved the ball around the back third involving Bobby McGinnis' feet.  Cory Hill, Hunter Reed, Tommy Hornbuckle, Mike Chrabazcz, and Mike McGinnis consistantly found the open man as they patiently waited for an open midfielder to move the ball forward.  Anderson would add his second assist of the game on a lovely throughball to senior Alan Barton who calmly knocked the ball past the Watkins Glen keeper on the breakaway to give EFA a 3-0 lead.  Ten minutes later, senior Joey Burin found junior Matt Cascio streaking down the right side from his outside midfield position.  Burin provided him with a nice lead pass that Cascio would eventually provide a beatiful cross to sophomore Denzel Harris who headed the ball out of the air and into the side net at the far post to finish the scoring off for EFA with a 4-0 lead.

Bobby McGinnis turned away all eight of Watkins Glen's shots on goal for the shutout.  He was only tested a couple times, but came up big when needed.

EFA next scrimmages Bath-Haverling on Thursday, August 23rd at 4:00 pm behind EFA before they begin their regular season against Horseheads on Saturday.
