The Football Golden Bears not only showed improvement from last year, but also showed improvement from last weeks scrimmage. As they took on the Greensburg Pirates Friday night, there was a feeling that the Golden Bears were about to turn a major corner. With a massive crowd to support them, the team lead by Coach Glesing took the field and attacked from the moment the game started. It as a back and forth battle that went right down to the wire, but ultimately found the Golden Bears on the wrong side of the scoreboard falling to Greensburg 21-35. But for those in attendance, they saw a much different game than the scoreboard read.

The Golden Bears were able to move the ball with relative ease at times through the run game. By doing so it lead to big throws by quarterback Eli Chappelow, none bigger than a 3rd quarter 20 yard pass which lead to a touchdown helping the Golden Bears gain the lead going into the fourth quarter of the game. Ultimately though that talent of the Greensburg quarterback, and IU commit Sam West proved to be too much for the Golden Bears defense late in the fourth quarter.

Coach Glesing loved the direction his team is going. “Kids fought hard at the end. Last year in this game it was a blowout, but this year we were leading in the fourth quarter. It was a real football game down to the end” Coach not only saw positives in his team, but also individual players “Our O-Line played well. We only punted one time. Luke Jackson played real well for us tonight”.

Coach Glesing saw one major thing that caught his eye “Crowd was amazing tonight. It was awesome! We need to keep this up. Not only for our our team, but all of our teams. I love the energy they brought tonight”

The Golden Bear Football team will travel to Rushville next Friday. Kickoff is at 7PM

On Friday night, the Golden Bears traveled the long road down to Madison, IN to take part in a jamboree style scrimmage against Madison High School and Salem High School. The Golden Bears JV started out showing great potential on the defensive side of the ball, not allowing either Salem or Madison to score points. The defense racked up two interceptions, one of which would have assuredly been a touchdown (Scrimmage rules prevent defensive touchdowns). On the offensive side of the ball, the Golden Bears used a mix of run and pass plays, one resulting in a near touchdown pass of 30 yards.

For the Varsity, The Golden Bears mixed it up trying different combinations and found success moving the ball forward. The defense had some strong success stopping the run game of both Salem and Madison, while the pass defense showed signs of improvement from last year.

“Goals tonight was to have fun! We put a lot of work into the offseason, lot of work in APC and our goal was to have fun” said Head Coach Brian Glesing. “Our kids played hard, had great character and great effort”

The Varsity Football team plays their first game Friday night at home against Greensburg High School at 7PM. JV plays next Monday (8/22) against Greensburg on the road.
