The Varsity Football team took the field on Friday night with one mission, win! It had been 23 games since the last time the Golden Bears had taken the victory in the HHC and that was on September 14th, 2018 vs Greenfield Central. At the end of the night, after a long hard fought battle with the New Castle Trojans, the Shelbyville Golden Bears did in fact accomplish their goal.

From the start of the game, New Castle looked as if they were going to give the Shelbyville a hard fought game by scoring first. The Trojans missed the extra point attempt and immediately the game started to become about miscues. The Golden Bears marched right down field and scored a touchdown, and with the made extra point it gave them the advantage. In a big play that followed the touchdown, Jordan Marcum came up with a safety, giving the Golden Bears two points and the ball back which then helped them reach another touchdown on an Axel Conover run. At 16-6, you could feel the momentum cruising behind the Golden Bears. That was until New Castle threw a long pass for a touchdown just before the half cutting the lead back down to 3.

Right at the start of the second half, the Trojans struck quickly and retook the lead from the Golden Bears with a touchdown pushing themselves ahead 20-16. The score stayed there into the fourth quarter until Axel Conover scored his second touchdown of the night helping secure the lead at 22-20. With the missed extra point, the game now turned tense.

Over the last minutes of the game, it saw both teams fumble the ball in key, game breaking situations. But as the final horn sounded at J.M. McKeand Stadium, the eruption of the crowd of students and fans was too strong to contain. The Shelbyville Golden Bears accomplished their mission and won the game!

Head Coach Brian Glesing commended the entire team for their effort, character and attitude they showed. He especially praised his offensive and defensive lines in his post game radio interview as being huge in their success Friday night.

The Varsity football team traveled the long road up to Delta High School on Friday night after back-to-back heartbreaking losses to start the season. The Delta Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 21-0 lead to start the 1st quarter capitalizing on Golden Bear mistakes early and a sluggish offense. The Golden Bears settled in the second quarter and put the clamps on the Golden Eagles, not allowing them to see the red zone and forcing them to punt. Even the offense in the second quarter started coming to life finding ways to push through the strong Delta front line.

The second half resembled much of the first with Delta scoring quickly out of the gate. By the end of the 4th quarter, the Golden Bears found their groove and the holes in the Delta defense, scoring a touchdown with 35 seconds left in the ball game. The final score 7-42.

Coach Brian Glesing when speaking to the boys after the game praised their effort and their tenacity in never giving up despite the score. Also reminding the boys of how well they played the second quarter of the game, shutting down the Golden Eagles and holding them scoreless.
