Tigers defeat Cinco Ranch 6-5

Posted by Ron Holsey on Apr 18 2004 at 05:00PM PDT

Coach Todd Moebes' JVA squad combined a complete game pitching performance by Andy Dalton with some effective small ball to defeat Cinco Ranch on Monday night by a score of 6-5. The team will have Friday night off as Elsik does not field a JVA team, and will play for the District title next Thursday versus Katy Taylor at 6:00 at home.

Cinco jumped out quickly on the Tigers, scoring one run in the first and four in the second, but could not push a run across after that. The Tigers kept it close the whole way as Carter Jurica led off the Tiger first with a double and scored on a Steven Boudreaux RBI single. Adam Heiman reached on a fielders choice, and Dalton's double placed runners at second and third. Scott Williams then drove the first pitch he saw up the middle for a 2-RBI single. Nick Barrios led off the Tiger second with a single and advanced to third when the centerfielder misplayed a drive off the bat of Matt Glover. Barrios then scored on Jurica's single, drawing the Tigers to within one at 5-4. The score stayed there until Barrios again led off the fourth with his second hit of the game, advanced to second on a passed ball, and to third on Jurica's third hit of the game. Coach Moebes then went for the tie, as Boudreaux executed a perfect squeeze bunt (his second sacrifice bunt of the game) to score Barrios from third and tie the game at 5-5. Dalton and the Tiger defense continued to frustrate the Cougars as they were shut down with either a strike out or a fly-out with runners in scoring position in four of the last five innings.

The deciding run came in the fifth inning for the Tigers. Dalton led off with a walk, and Williams was then hit by a pitch, with both runners advancing when the Cougar catcher threw the ball into right field on an attempted pick-off play. Cory Mitchell then drove a long fly ball to centerfield, allowing Dalton to score easily from third with what would prove to be the winning run.

Dalton went the distance on the mound for the Tigers. He scattered 13 hits for the Cougars, consistently making good pitches to get out of tough situations, including picking a Cougar runner off second to halt the four run rally in the second. Dalton struck out a season high of 12 on the night (including four K's to end innings) and only walked one in getting the victory.
