Lightning - Revised Guidelines

Posted by Paul Crouse at Apr 13, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
In October of 2007, NFHS changed their guidelines for handling lightning.  The 30-30 flash-to-bang rule has been replaced with a much simpler rule.  The new guidance says that if you hear thunder, or see a lightning bolt that heads in the dirction of the ground, suspend play for 30 minutes.  Do not resume play until at least 30 minutes passes from the last time you hear thunder or see lightning.
Annually the Chapter issues a separate sportsmanship award for each of the three divisions during the boys' season. For each division, you will see in alphabetical order the two or three schools that have received the fewest negative points due to cautions and sendoffs for their varsity teams during the regular season.  Please note that not all cautions and sendoffs carry the same point values - the numbers reflect the total point values, not the total number of cards issued.  The board has determined that, due to an excessive number of negative points accumulated by each of the teams in division 2, none of the teams in division 2 qualify for consideration to receive the division 2 sportsmanship award this year.  Select one school from each of the other two divisions based upon your impression of their success in meeting PIAA's and YAIAA's standards of good sportsmanship in their varsity, junior varsity  and junior high programs (where applicable) combined.  One of the factors that you may wish to consider is how well a team behaved in relation to how well they succeeded. For example, did any of the teams break the myth that it isn't possible to finish high in their division without accumulating a pile of cautions for dissent and unsporting behavior along the way?  The deadline to cast your vote is noon on Monday, October 29, 2007.
