Winter League Game 1 vs. U18/SAC United

Posted by Alan Olson at Dec 21, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
22 Dec. '07. After the first two matches were canceled due to administrative scheduling error and weather, the Internationals played its first winter league match today against the U18/SAC United. In coach Pete's absence due to family emergency, Brett Colton stepped in to help -- and the SAC team helped too, fielding just 8 players due to injuries and illness and with a field player standing in for the GK. There were a number of players absent for Inter as well, including Patrick M. away with Pete on family emergency, Ben N. and Philip F. away for holidays with family, Nathaniel H. away for wrestling tourney, Nicholas V. out sick and Alex C. still out rehabbing a groin muscle tear. After a sluggish opening 10 minutes of much lateral and back passing, the Internationals would strike against the depleted SAC team whose GK finally showed up. Scott pressured a ball in the box causing the defender to lose the ball and Ebo possessed the ball from 18 yards out, dribbled a few yards ahead and the struck in the goal from about 6 yards out. The defense held the SAC United to team just a single squibbed shot on goal and no corners while committing 3 fouls (including a YC on #19 and 1 handball). The Internationals would shoot 8 times on goal and setup 2 corner kick opportunities while committing 3 fouls (including 2 offsides). At about the 35 minute mark, Martin sent an outstanding through-pass between defenders from about mid-field on the left to a streaking Scott about 25 yards out center who collected the ball, dribbled forward 1v1 and eluded defenders where he slammed in the 2nd goal about 15 yards on the right, and the half ended, 2-0, Internationals. The 2nd half started out oddly with the SAC #9 kicking the ball all the way to Seth after the whistle blew for Inter's kick off, and he was shown a YC. Just 2 minutes later, Nat collected a ball in the center and passed to Ebo on the left side who then served the ball into the goal mouth where Scott was able to tap in the 3rd goal for Inter. The SAC team were clearly frustrated and made several hard fouls with YC's show to #18 twice with resultant red card, and the official called the match after just about 12 minutes of play as it was getting out of hand, 3-0, Internationals.

Internationals Unbeaten at VCCL

Posted by Alan Olson at Dec 13, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

14 Dec. '08.  For its 3rd match on Sun. morning, the skies were sunny and a bit warmer with calmer winds.  The Internationals faced its friends and foe, Carolina 91 Select (NC), whom it had battled in a hard-fought, nail-biter match in the USCS National Cup VI Championship 2007, edging the Carolina 91 Select, 2-1, in the final minute.   Inter expected Carolina 91 Select  team to be focused and to play hard throughout match until the end as it did in 2007.   The Internationals were not disappointed as the Carolina team played with intense determination.  In the 1st half, the Carolina team moved the ball and managed 6 shots on goal, indlucing a couple of free kicks from 20 yds. and 30 yds. out which went awry and 1 dangerous corner kick which Seth punched away. Carolina 91 Select committed 8 fouls (including a YC shown to #19 for a hard foul). Inter had its chances as well, taking 6 shots on goal and setup 2 corners. Vitalis rcvd a ball on the on the left and took a hard shot which just missed wide left and Mike sent a blast from the middle near 20 yds. center which the GK finger-tip saved for a corner kick. Vitalis would find the net at the 30 min. mark off of a strike near 22 yds. on the left. At about the 42 min. mark, Vitalis served a left corner kick into the goal mouth where it was deflected out by the GK and Ebo struck in a close shot to put the Internationals up, 2-0. Inter committed 9 fouls (including YC’s shown to Patrick and Erik, 1 handball and 2 offsides).

In the 2nd half, the Carolina team were held to 2 shots on goal including a shot which Seth made a goal-saving finger-tip save, and 3 corner kicks but all were unsuccessful. Carolina Select committed 7 fouls (including 1 offsides) while Inter committed 9 fouls (including 2 offsides and a RC shown to Schillo at the 15 min. mark for a stunt by a Carolina player falling backwards and pulling Schillo's elbow to his upper torso just before a set play by Inter). Subsequently, Pat served the free kick into the box where Erik timed his jump up to head strike in a shot to put Inter up, 3-0. Inter took 5 shots on goal and 6 corner kicks, but would finish just the lone score off the set play at the 15 min. mark, and the match ended, 3-0, Inter.
