Summer 2002 Training

Cross Country Summer 2002

What a great summer this has been! Both the boys and girls teams have worked diligently to ensure that the 2002 season is the best ever. Throughout the summer, training has been tougher and team times have been faster. At this years time trial the boys team, shaping up to be the fastest team in the last five years, posted a 10 minute improvement over last years team. Theyre a cinch to be competitive in league. The girls team time was not quite as fast as last year, but the many lady Mats who improved their times over last year is a good sign that theyll be ready for Suburban League competition. Congratulations to the new runners who survived their first summer with the Cross Country team.

Leading the way into the new season are the following athletes who contributed mightily to the success of the summer:

Say Goodbye to Summer

Posted by Amanda Stephens at Sep 2, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Congrats on a great summer everyone. This was one of the most trying summers for the boys and girls. Varsity girls will run almost 400 miles and the boys over 500 by the next few weeks. The team has had some tuff stuff to deal with this year, but it has made us stronger. This summer the captains named runners of the week and they included: Ana Dag Destinie Jim Minero ???? Megan ???? These people stuck out to the Captains and put out the most effort. I am unsure of all the boy runners of the week, I have to ask Dag. School is coming and we all have to adjust. Remember to drink water and not too much soda. Boys and girls need to wear the polo shirts on race days. All we are asking for is the polos, no need for warm-ups. Plus, it is too hot to wear pants, but remember for the future. Things for the girls to look forward to during the school year are: (1) Friday night slumber party (TBA, maybe 9/27), (2) baskets and basket exchange/breakfast before League Finals and (3) the whole team going to speed zone on 9/7 (cost of $25). If you want more activities you need to ask for them! Well I just wanted to wish everyone a great first day of school (even though it is school), and say good luck to all the new freshman. Have fun, Amanda "Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it." -Oprah Winfrey "If the Lord had meant man to run, He'd have given him four legs, or at least made him late for the bus." -Red Smith

Summer Training Camp in Big Bear

Posted by Ralph Casas at Aug 30, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Summer Camp A Success!

In what many participants called "the best summer camp ever," the cross country teams spent seven nights and eight days training in the mountains around Big Bear Lake. Congratulations to the veterans and the first year runners who survived the intense workouts. Everybody returned home a bit more tired and a lot more excited about the upcoming season.

Over the course of the week the varsity girls ran an average of 65+ miles while the boys ran 80+ miles. Leading the way for the girls were Amanda Stephens, Jennifer Minero, and Ana Poblet who each compiled over 70 miles. On the boy's team, Dag Tesfaye, Nathaniel Moore and Jared Bird ran close to 100 miles each.

Running the many scenic trails around the valley turned out to be the core of the training for the week. Holcomb Valley, Castle Rock, 2N10, Gray's Peak, and the "Shack Loop" are now part of La Mirada Cross Country running stories.

The highlight of training was the 13-miler along route 2N10 that Nathaniel, Dag, Sergio, Freddy and Jared finished in under 1 hour 50 minutes. Ana, Jennifer, Amanda, Jackie, Marlene and Megan completed the 13-mile run for the girls.

Activities for the week included a movie day (Signs, XXX, Blue Crush, and Austin Powers), bowling, water slides, go-carts, fishing, ping-pong, basketball and numerous trips to the arcade to play pool and "Dance-Dance-Revolution." The many unforgettable moments included: Kevin dancing to Jake's guitar playing, eating around the campfire, Mark and Brian spending hundreds of quarters on "D-D-R," and secret late night "runs" to McD's.

Thanks to Andy and Bill Bird, Tom Palmer, Sam Cooley, Laura Casas, Nicole Reynolds and Norberta Martinez for transporting, taking care of and feeding 30 hungry athletes and coaches.
