Stanford Invitational - Results

Posted by Mike Davis at Sep 29, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Teams from across the country headed to Stanford University's famed golf course for a day of top-notch cross country competition.  The nation's #1 and #2 teams were there, as well as 7 out of the top 10 California squads.  Amazing performances (read - fast times) were the theme of the day.

Monte Vista competed in the large school division, along with several other EBAL teams.  Up first were the varsity boys, who were once again paced by Junior Bhavik Kanzaria who finished 13th overall in an outstanding time of 16:16 for 5K (3.1 miles).  MV's 2,3 and 4 runners were tightly packed, finishing in 146, 148 and 157th place.  Tyler Breen, Mike Roderick and Clinton McAdams all ran respectable mid-17's.  Jake Smith finished the scoring for MV in 229th place, which put the team 26th out of 52 squads that toed the line.  Danny Bartz and Keith Romoser completed the group.

With two varsity runners missing, the MV Girls team took to the line determined to run hard and get valuable experience on the 5K course.  And that they did!  Jr Renee Lau paced the Stangs with a respectable 124th place finish and a 21:13 time.  Running her first varsity race, Jr Brett Zorich was next, close behind in 143rd (out of 300 runners).  Soph Christie Beeman had an excellent day, finishing 3rd for MV in 21:55 and earning a trip to Clovis next weekend.  Alternate Lauren Ho was 4th, having gone from car washing to racing at Stanford within a few hours.  Now THAT is coming through under pressure!  Taysa Bowers completed the varsity scoring in 198th place.  Kim Chin and Kaitlin Kelly were 6th and 7th runners.

* mouse froze, split missed. Renee credited for 6 laps, Jen for 2.  Used Jen's two laps as

her mile pace, then subtracted the avg from Renee to get her time.  Both close estimates.

**  Keith finished 3 full laps, then was 100 meters into 4th lap when clock hit 0:00.0.

Credited with .8 of a mile.

***  Katy Rabago and Mike Roderick ran miles for a "Second" team at the start of the event, before the team decided to go with just one team.  Their times were not recorded on this log (although there were fast!!!)

Nike Invitational Results

F/S JV Boys first off the line - and encounter a mob scene at the finish chute.  Unprecedented back up causes places and times to be mixed up.  Race director apologizes to runners and coaches.  Coupled with a short warm up period, it wasn't an easy day for this squad.  However, led by Cole White's 16th place finish, the team was an impressive 11th out of 21 complete teams.

JV girls race has no such problem, and Monte Vista responds with a 5th place team finish - the highest of the day (again!).  Brett Zorich tunes up for her varsity debut by finishing 5th overall.  In an amazing example of packing, the next 4 Lady Stangs came across in a strong cluster (26th to 47th), leading to high team placement.  Katie Swinnerton, Christine Barake, Anna Hoyt and Kimberly Abood finished the scoring.

Highlights from the other races:

JV Boys Limited race -
* Harry Nunns runs fastest 2.0 mile of the day - 12:16
* Insanely tight pack follows - next 6 runners hit the line betwen 57th and 68th place!!
* Tight packing leads to 11th out of 26 teams!
* Elrick, Awai, Matulionis and Heiting round out the scoring.

Frosh Soph Girls Unlimited Race -
* Huge squad of MV runners toe the line.
* Team nerves are much better - great start for most.
* Kaity Thomas first across for MV in 15:33 - 52nd scoring place.
* Ratliff, Wilson, Hammitt and Parra complete an 17th place showing (out of 24)

Frosh Soph Boys Limited Race -
* Only 6 Stangs toe the line
* Rahul Avasarala leads team with a 114th place finish.
* Team is 26th out of 33 in a crowded, competitive field.
* Nordmeyer, DeLuca, Beeman and Terry round out the scoring squad. Bergquist 6th.

Varsity Girls Race -
* Chloe Wood and Renee Lau lead team with 67th and 68th place finishes.  Chloe completes first 3.0 mile XC race!  Renee takes one minute off 2005 time!
* Soph "veteran" Kaitlin Kelly is 3rd with a solid 100th place finish (out of 205 running).
* Newcomers Taysa Bowers and Kim Chin complete the scoring.  Taysa inaccurately credited for last place - affects team placement.  Both run first 3 mile race too.
* Christie Beeman and Lauren Ho round out the squad.  Beeman's first 3 mile.
* Solid team effort here - especially with so many completing the three miles for the 1st time!

Varsity Boys Race -
* Two varsity mainstays - Clinton McAdams and Danny Bartz are held out as precautions.
* Team responds by taking 17th out of 40!
* Bhavik Kanzaria leads the way again, finishing one out of the medals (in a questionable finish chute placement).  Bhavik vows to make it clear cut next year!  16:16 time is excellent for this early in the season.
* Soph Mike Roderick, in his first 3 mile race, responds with a 2nd place finish for MV - 89th overall scorer!  17:36 time is solid!  Summer running paying off for this Soph - cementing a varsity slot.
* Tyler Breen is 3rd, with Jake Smith 4th (first 3.0 race?) and Soph Alternate Alex Morris stepping up big as our 5th man in 178th place (out of 279 varsity runners.
* Keith Romoser is 6th - nursing a sore calf.

All in all - a very solid day for Monte Vista.  Competitive team placement, with the feeling that we can do more!  Next up - The Overnight, then Stanford for Varsity.
