Roselea in the hat for 3rd Round

MONTROSE ROSELEA vs BANCHORY ST TERNAN OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP 2ND ROUND 06/11/2004 Roselea were at home to Banchory St Ternan in the 2nd Round of the OVD Junior Cup last Saturday. Banchory are in the North First Division and currently hold a mid table position. Roselea almost kept the same starting line up which drew with North End in the League Cup. The only personnel change was John Wands taking over between the posts due to Ross Mcleod being ineligible due a clause in his loan deal from Carnoustie. On the injury front Paul Masson, Graham Walger, Hayden Smith and Michael Ross may still be out for a few weeks yet. James McKellar was working offshore. Roselea lined up in a 4-4-2 formation: John Wands, Matt Miller, Paul Whyte Paul Ross, Chris Masson, Martin Christie, Eric Watson, David Craig and Scott Findlater, Colin Page and Duncan Croall. The bench consisted of Kevin Crawford, Kevin Smith, Dean Milne, Lee Walker and Luke Myers. Strangely, for the third week running, Broomfield was unusually calm. Banchory were first to threaten when a free kick was deflected over the bar by their centre forward in 5 minutes. Roselea took the lead against the run of play in 15 minutes. A poor cross field pass was intercepted by Scott Findlater who went on a run down the left hand side and his perfect cross found Eric Watson at the far post and his diving header found the net. Findlater was causing Banchory all sorts of problems and another left sided cross just failed to meet the head of Duncan Croall. Banchory were having the upper hand in possession terms but seemed to lack any real cutting edge in front of goal and their best efforts were from longer range with Wands having to turn a couple round for corners. Half Time Roselea 1 Banchory 0 Roselea started the second half in more determined fashion and extended their lead in 60 minutes. A Colin Page corner was bulleted into the net by Paul Whyte in what can only be described as “the type that keepers just don’t save”. Five minutes later it was 3-0. Set piece expert Colin Page was again the orchestrator with a typical delivery from the corner the only difference to number two was the fact that it was Eric Watson who scored. In 70 minutes Kevin Crawford replaced Duncan Croall with Eric Watson moving upfield. In 72 minutes Banchory got a goal back from the penalty spot after Masson was adjudged to have pushed in the box. Banchory’s number 10 made no mistake from the spot. Lee Walker replaced Matt Miller and Kevin Smith went on for the hard working Martin Christie. John Wands then came to Rosleas rescue with three important saves in the last 5 minutes, one save being of the finest class. Eric Watson should have made it four for Roselea in the last minute when he found himself through on the keeper. His pifolous effort went wide to Kevin Crawford and he attempted an overhead kick which never really came off. Roselea 3 Banchory 1 Roselea will be happy to be through to the next round, which will be drawn on November 14th. The score line probably flattered but Banchory never really threatened despite being a very attractive footballing side. Hopefully this was the best day for some players to have an off day and put it behind them. John Wands capped an excellent performance with a string of saves near the end of the match and has staked his claim for the number one shirt in the coming weeks. Match Sponsors were J Lammond. John Wands picked up the Man of the Match award. Roselea travel to Broughty Athletic next week in their final DJ Laing Cup match. Although qualification is almost out of the window they will still want to keep their long unbeaten run going. Kick Off is at 2.00pm League Result: Scone 1 North End 1.

2-2 Draw All But Ends League Cup Hopes

MONTROSE ROSELEA vs DUNDEE NORTH END DJ LAING LEAGUE CUP SECTION 4 30/10/2004 Roselea were at home to Dundee North End in the DJ Laing Cup Section 4. The Section is the tightest of the four sections with any one of four teams having a shout of qualification. North End would be viewed as favourites due to their games in hand so a win was a must for Roselea to boost their chances. The squad was on the same lines as the previous week with only James McKellar adding to the five players missing for various reasons. Roselea lined up in a 4-4-2 formation: Ross Mcleod, Matt Miller, Paul Whyte Paul Ross, Chris Masson, Martin Christie, Eric Watson, David Craig and Scott Findlater, Colin Page and Duncan Croall. The bench consisted of Kevin Crawford, Kevin Smith, Dean Milne, Lee Walker and John Wands. Strangely, for the second week running, Broomfield was unusually calm and the pitch was flat after being rolled the previous evening. Roselea obviously needing the win attacked from the start and Duncan Croall almost gave the home team the lead after rounding the keeper but a North End defender somehow managed to keep the ball out when a goal seemed inevitable. Eric Watson then had a header cleared off the line as the Lea continued to press. Roselea were then dealt a blow when North End took the lead in only 5 minutes. Some naïve defending from Miller allowed North End to break on the left and despite the combined efforts of Whyte and Mcleod, Robbie Holden stroked home at the second attempt. Roselea were playing some good football and had a long spell of pressure with Masson, Croall and Watson all going close. In 25 minutes Craig of Roselea and Wilkie of North End picked up bookings with Craig very unfortunate to find the book. In 29 minutes North End should have extended their lead after a slip by Masson. Blackwood found himself in on goal but pulled his shot past the post. North End fullback Stewart was then booked after 3 successive fouls with the first two meriting a card in their own right. Paul Ross also found yellow for his first challenge. The match took a big change of direction in 35 minutes. Stewart received a straight red card to add to his earlier yellow after a two-footed lunge on Masson. Eric Watson had to be substituted in 40 minutes when a clash off heads left him with a golf ball sized lump on his head. Substitute Crawford made an instant impact on the game when his 25 yard left footed shot was deflected into the net by Martin Christie for the equaliser right on half time. Half Time Roselea 1 Dundee North End 1 The second period started slowly with North End setting out their stall to frustrate Roselea and hit them on the break. Roselea lacked that bit of urgency to break down the defence. It wasn’t until the 65th minute that the first real chance came when a North End defender almost turned a Christie cross into his own net. Roselea were having all the pressure but again found the North End defence in no mood to back down and it was difficult to either get width or to keep possession with some direct play. Roselea went close in 80 minutes when a Findlater cross appeared to be handled and after strong penalty appeals the ball broke to Martin Christie and his first time volley almost went in. Roselea then found themselves behind after a freak goal gave North End the lead in 83 minutes. A long free kick from Craig Brown inside his own half caught Ross McLeod and Paul Ross in no mans land and the ball bounced over the keeper and bounced agonisingly into the empty net. Roselea bounced back almost immediately and Martin Christie won a penalty with less than 5 minutes remaining. He went on a surging run and was toppled just inside the box. Chris Masson stepped up to make no mistake from the spot to set up a grandstand finish. After a couple of goalmouth scrambles Roselea had a bigger appeal for a penalty when Scott Findlater was tripped in the box. Surprisingly the referee never took any action against Findlater, leaving some question marks about the decision. North End hung on for a valuable point and now look favourites to top the group. They deserve some credit for they way they defended after playing for 60 minutes with ten men. Roselea should not be disheartened as they played some good football and perhaps just needed a break in front of goal to swing the match in their favour. It is now inevitable that the Roselea’s grip on the league cup could be over with only a miracle required to qualify from the top spot. Roselea will look back to the early matches in the section games and curse the injury problems which were severe at that time. Win Puts Roselea Top

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 23, 2004 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
MONTROSE ROSELEA vs FORFAR WEST END DJ LAING LEAGUE CUP SECTION 4 23/10/2004 Roselea were at home to Forfar West End in a must win match in the DJ Laing Cup Section 4. With North End leading the section and due to visit Roselea next week, this was an excellent chance for Roselea to get their noses in front. Roselea were also looking to avenge a five goal hammering in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. Missing from the squad were Paul Masson (offshore) and Graham Walger, Hayden Smith, Michael Ross and Chris Simpson are still on the injury list. James McKellar returned to the squad from holiday and Kevin Crawford had recovered from his illness. Roselea lined up in a 4-4-2 formation: Ross Mcleod, Matt Miller, Paul Whyte Paul Ross, Chris Masson, James McKellar, Eric Watson, David Craig and Scott Findlater, Colin Page and Duncan Croall. The bench consisted of Kevin Crawford, Kevin Smith, Dean Milne, Martin Christie and John Wands. On a very calm day for Broomfield, Roselea kicked off with very strong sun at their backs and had the first attack with Eric Watson heading wide from a Colin Page corner in 5 minutes. The match took a while to settle into any pattern and the next piece of action came in 25 minutes with Godfrey of West End trying his luck from 25 yards and his shot went narrowly past the post with Mcleod in control. In 36 minutes a Scott Findlater cross was headed narrowly wide by Croall. Scott Findlater then created a chance for himself after some neat dribbling and his left footed effort went narrowly wide with the keeper beaten. Half Time Roselea 0 Forfar West End 0 Roselea then had the best chance to break the deadlock. A Colin Page cross was met by a combination of Eric Watson and keeper Vanderyll, the ball broke to Watson but he could not direct his shot into the open goal from 6 yards. Ross Mcleod was then called into action on two occasions. Firstly he had to come for a long cross and punched clear and the he brialliantly blocked a Longmuir effort when he was one on one. The game was livening up and West End should have really taken the lead when a long diagonal ball found Longmuir, whose pass put Godfrey in and he missed sitter from 5 yards. In 67 minutes Roselea replaced Duncan Croall with Kevin Crawford. The substitution almost paid off instantly as Eric Watson who was moved forward found himself clear of the West End defence only to over-run the ball into the advancing keeper. Roselea finally opened the scoring after a fine piece of play. Colin Page sent Findlater away on the left, his low cross was met by Eric Watson and the keeper and the loose ball was poked home by Kevin Crawford. In 80 minutes James Mckellar was substituted for Martin Christie. Findlater almost increased the lead in 84 minutes when his snap shot was excellently saved by ex Dundee & Brechin keeper Vanderyll. Martin Christie found himself through on goal in a carbon copy of the week before and his left foot shot went narrowly wide. West End put three up front during the last 10 minutes but found the Roselea defence in a stubborn mood. Final Roselea 1 Forfar West End 0 Match Sponsors: Colin Mitchell, Kenny Milne, Rick Wales and Scott Mcneal presented Ross Mcleod with his Man of the Match award. The young keeper had a great game with his save from Longmuir coming at a crucial stage of the match Roselea had to dig really deep to win this match and the second half performance justified the win. Like a few recent matches which have been tight, the difference was the fact that they never conceded a goal. That is now five matches at Broomfield with no goals against and this does give a platform to build on. The win has put Roselea in front by one point and with second placed North End due to visit Broomfield Park this week a win will put pressure on North End although they do have 2 matches in hand. It is likely that Roselea will need a hand from other teams to qualify. Roselea have Broughty to play away in their final game whilst North End have Coupar Angus and Broughty away and Kirrie at home in addition to next weeks match.
