LATE EQUALISER THWARTS ASC

Posted by Roy Gill at Aug 7, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Roselea entered their second DJ Laing Cup section match in the knowledge that only a win would give them any hope of progressing to the Semi Finals. With Wednesday nights victors Brechin Vics travelling to Arbroath Vics who also won on Wednesday night against Arbroath Sporting Club a win would possibly set up a group decider against Arbroath Vics.

The Roselea management team rung a few changes from the side that flopped against Brechin Vics with Robert Urquhart, James McKellar and Scott Riach all coming in to freshen things up. Gavin Reid recovered from illness and took his place on the bench

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Doug Craig, Whyte, Graham, McKellar, Rae, Urquhart, Strachan, Watson & Riach. Subs: Brand, Aitken, Reoch, Barclay, Hood, Miller & Reid.

In 2 minutes Roselea were shocked as Wallace drifted through the home midfield and sent a great pass to Owbridge who rounded Mcleod and after a stumble passed into the net from close range.

Roselea fought back and Urquhart fed Rae who had a long range effort which was just off target.

In 13 minutes ASC had another chance when Fallon broke forward and his right footed shot had Mcleod scrambling across his goal but the shot was just wide of the post.

Roselea were looking better and Craig Watson had a snap shpt deflected behind for a corner. Strachan sent in a deep corner which Watson flicked onto McKellar who took a quick shot but it was well over the bar. Watson flicked a Rae cross goalwards in 25 minutes but Logie was well positioned to save with ease.

In 31 minutes another great Strachan corner was cleared off the line by Stewart for a corner and from that corner Roselea won a penalty after Wallace was adjudged to have handled on the line. Graham stepped up and despite a brave effort from Logie the ball managed to find its way into the net. Two minutes later Roselea almost took the lead when Watsons diving header was brilliantly saved by Logie before Urquhart almost squeezed his follow up home.

Roselea did get their second goal in 38 minutes with a well worked goal. Craig crossed to McKellar who headed the ball back to Riach and his volley was spilled by Logie then Watson followed up to score his first goal in Roselea colours. In 40 minutes Strachan and Riach combined with the latters shot being deflected behind for a corner as they almost got a third.

Half Time: Roselea 2 ASC 1

Roselea were caught cold at the start of the second half and Owbridge played in the onrushing Mcphee who composed himself before finishing well from 16 yards.

McKellar had a great run before his left footed shot was turned round the post by Logie when perhaps he could have held it.

Owbridge again threatened the home rearguard when he found himself one on one with Whyte after a corner but his left foot shot was tame. Both sides had dangerous crosses sent in but neither had any willing takers.

In 67 minutes Hood replaced McKellar. Hood made an instant impact and was willing to take on Fallon at any chance. He fed Graham whose cross found the head of Riach but his header was not strong enough to bother Logie.

ASC were caught napping at a throw in as Mustard picked out Hood in space, he advanced and sent in a dangerous shot which Logie had to usher wide in 73 minutes. Watson had a cheeky chipped effort go just over a minute later.

Reoch replaced Strachan.

ASC looked like they had snatched the winner in 85 minutes with a great finish from Stewart who chipped the ball over Mcleod following a mix up in defence.

Aitken then replaced Watson. Roselea snatched a late and controversial goal in the last minute when Riach & Whyte challenged Logie for a high ball, the ball broke to Riach who tapped home with the visitors livid that a free kick had not been awarded. The game had hardly restarted when referee Schroder blew for full time.

Full Time: Roselea 3 Arbroath Sporting Club 3

A very controversial end to the game saw Roselea grab what was probably a deserved equaliser on the balance of play. ASC will look at it and think that having held such a late lead it was an unfair way to end the game. With Arbroath Vics winning 4-0 against Brechin Vics the draw was no use to either side and it looks very likely that Vics will be in the Semi Finals. Roselea will finish the group matches with a visit to Ogilvy Park to meet the group winners elect and that match kicks off at 2.30pm.  Roselea will need to be a bit meaner in defence after losing 5 goals over the two matches.

Gavin Rae picked up his Man of the Match award from the Sponsors The Golf Inn Vaders. Roselea will open their League campaign on August 21st with a home derby v Brechin Vics. Hospitality for that match is available by contacting Roy Gill on 07908 763219.

ROSELEA WIN FIRST SILVERWARE OF THE SEASON

Sunday 4th October 2009

DJ Laing Cup Final

Montrose Roselea v Lochee Utd

Roselea traveled to Carnoustie on Sunday to contest the first silverware of the season against Super League side Lochee Utd for the DJ Laing Cup.

The squad was without Assistant Manager Doug Craig, David Craig, Watson and Page but new signing Jonny Mitchell was included.

Roselea:McLeod, Reoch, Graham(Miller), Whyte, Longmuir, McKellar, Fotheringham(Rae), Kerrigan(Mustard), Kennedy, Fraser, Mitchell. Subs: Riach, Brand, Strachan, Massie.

The Super League side was the first to try their luck Blackwood headed a cross down for Robertson but the shot went wide of goal.

The game quickly turned into a midfield battle with both sides unable to gain the upper hand and it took until 19 minutes before Roselea had their first real chance. Fraser broke clear on the left and from his cross McKellar could not direct his header and the ball was cleared.

Lochee responded quickly and it took a great blocking tackle by Whyte from a Robertson cross to keep out the danger before Middleton broke on the right and his cross was turned behind for a corner from which Watson rose high but headed over.

Roselea were finding it hard to gain possession and from a smart move Voigts saw his shot curl wide of the goal.

In 26 minutes Longmuir fired in a dangerous free kick and Whyte headed back across goal but there were no takers on hand.

Kennedy was next to try his luck with a header but could not get any power or direction on the cross from McKellar.

Both teams had chances before the break with firstly Middleton having a shot but McLeod saved easily before Fraser broke for Roselea only to see his left foot shot go wide.

HALF TIME – ROSELEA 0 LOCHEE UTD 0

Roselea were forced into making a change at the interval with Graham taking a head knock having to be replaced by Miller.

The game carried the same pattern with Lochee having more off the ball but finding it hard to break a resolute Roselea rearguard and always looking lively on the break.

Robertson came close for Lochee after 60 minutes when he met an Alexander cross but his effort went narrowly past the post.

Then at the other end it took a good save from Ross to deny Fraser after the striker was sent through by Mitchell.

The game was starting to stretch a little and Lochee had the closet attempt so far when substitute Alexander strode forward and hit a shot which McLeod made a great save tipping onto the crossbar before being cleared.

Roselea were now under pressure and from a corner that was partially cleared Cargill hit what looked like a goal all the way until McLeod dived and made another top class save.

Longmuir was next to save Roselea as Middleton was allowed room on the left hand side of the penalty area and after lobbing McLeod it was the defender who headed the ball clear before reaching the goal.

The game was drawing to a close and it was Longmuir again at the other end this time who fired over from a good position.

There were no further chances and the referee blew his final whistle and the game went straight to penalty kicks.

After the statutory five kicks each the teams were still level at 3-3 with Miller, Longmuir and Whyte converting for Roselea while Middleton, Blackwood and Alexander counting for Lochee Utd. It was now sudden death and McLeod made a great save from Christie and it was left to young Jordan Reoch who calmly scored to win the trophy for Roselea.

The sponsors chose Roselea goalkeeper Ross McLeod as their Man of the Match.

FULL TIME – ROSELEA 0 LOCHEE UTD 0 (ROSELEA WON 4-3 0N PENALTIES)

A tremendous boost for Roselea who battled for the whole game against their higher league opponents and came away with the trophy in the end. Every player played their part but a special mention to Man of the Match Ross McLeod for his outstanding performance and to young Jordan Reoch who showed great composure in taking the winning spot kick

Roselea now return to league action this week (Saturday 10th October) with an away game against Arniston Rangers which is being played at Newtongrange. Kick Off 2.30pm.
