Dougie Craig is still in a spin

Posted by Roy Gill at Mar 10, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Yes it is true. Dougie Craig is still in a spin from that fateful afternoon at Strathmore Park on a hot afternoon in May 2004. As his Carnoustie team photo shows he has still not recovered from his day of chasing the "Snake". I doubt if he may ever play again and will be a sad loss to football. If you read his player profile it reads "My worst moment in football was going to Montrose", well I beg to differ he should have went to the West End Social Club on the fateful day. If you dont beleive the authenticity of the photo please check the Official CarnoustieFC website@ http://www.carnoustiefc.com/ squad profiles Doesnt Ross Mcleod look hard in it! Roselea scrape win against West End

Posted by Roy Gill at Jan 18, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
MONTROSE ROSELEA vs FORFAR WEST END WHYTE & MCKAY TAYSIDE PREMIER LEAGUE 15/01/2005 Montrose Roselea kicked off 2005 at home to Forfar West End. The Forfar side arrived at Montrose unbeaten in their four league matches to date and were one point ahead of Roselea with one game in hand. The sides had met twice earlier in the season in the League Cup with Forfar West End winning 5-0 at Forfar and Roselea winning the reverse fixture 1-0. West End had also been stagnant for 4 weeks due to the Christmas break and the postponement of last weeks game against Kinnoull. Roselea on the other hand were buoyed by their win at Super League Oakley the previous week. Roselea reverted to 4-4-2 from the previous week with John Wands in goal behind a back four of Matt Miller, Chris Masson, Paul Ross, and Paul Whyte, Kevin Crawford, David Craig, Eric Watson and Scott Findlater made up the midfield and Colin Page and Jai Clayton making his full Roselea debut were upfront. Lee Walker, Duncan Croall, Wayne Keith, James McKellar and Ross Mcleod were the subs with Dean Milne, Martin Christie, Hayden Smith, Chris Simpson and Graham Walger unable to find a spot in the line up. Roselea kicked off with a fairly strong Broomfield wind at their backs and were awarded a dubious corner in 5 minutes. This was to prove to be very crucial as Colin Pages corner was met by Chris Masson and Jai Clayton knocked the ball over the line from close range to make it a wonder start for himself and Roselea. West End were spurred into action and Duell was unlucky not to equalise from a free kick, which rebounded off the bar in 15 minutes. Cougan then went close for West end when his shot had to be turned round by the alert Wands. West End were getting on top and only a great block by Chris Masson prevented them equalising. Roselea fought back and Forfar keeper Van Der Eyll had to gather at the second attempt with Watson ready to pounce. In 34 minutes Roselea scored a wonderful goal. Scott Findlater gathered the ball just inside the West End half and went on a run beating two players in the process, he then played a 1-2 with Jai Clayton and finished off the move in style with a left foot strike. In a two minute spell the referee had to book four players with Roselea’s Craig & Watson being particularly unlucky to see yellow after some provocation form the opposition. Jai Clayton was then released by a long Wands clearance and he held off two defenders before forcing a save from the keeper. From the resulting Colin Page corner, the outstanding Chris Masson guided a header into the far corner off the post to make it 3-0 Roselea. Half Time Roselea 3 Forfar West End 0, although West End defended well,Roselea built a substantial lead with three well taken goals. In 48 minutes Roselea almost sealed the points when a great run and cross from Findlater was almost finished by Eric Watson whose header crashed against the bar. In 52 minutes a moment of madness by the usually reliable Paul Whyte let West End back into the match. A rash tackle when McGregor was running away from the goals resulted in a penalty. Cougan made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-1. Moments later Forfar West End found themselves down to 10 men when Duell was booked for a second time when he squared up to Miller in a threatening manner following a heavy challenge on Watson. In 60 minutes West End made it a real match of it and McGregor finished a move with a hint of offside about it. West End were well on top but Roselea had a great chance to clinch the points when Clayton outstripped the defence with his pace. His first effort was blocked by the keeper but his follow up effort appeared to be handled on the line by a West End defender. Wayne Keith then replaced the injured Kevin Crawford. The previously booked Miller was fortunate not to see red when he was let off with a deliberate handball. Roselea were getting the run around and West End they forced a series of corners with the mounting pressure telling on Roselea as they panicked with some poor clearances. Wands was tested at full stretch and then Craig was almost enticed into a penalty bearing tackle as the clock run down. Masson then had series of blocks and headers to make sure that the points remained at Broomfield For the second week in a row Roselea held on for a hard fought and very important victory. This result really opens up the title race and Roselea now find themselves 4 points off the top with 3 games in hand. Although the display was not the classiest Roselea performance of the season the result was certainly one of the most important. Chris Masson was a rock for Roselea at the back and made a number of important blocks and headed clearances to make sure of the points. Jai Clayton had his first taste of Junior football and as well as scoring on his full debut will prove to be a welcome addition to the squad in the testing months ahead. Match Sponsor was Gill Financial Services Ltd. Man of the Match went to Chris Masson. Other Premier League scores: Broughty 1 Scone 1 Blairgowrie 0 ASC 3 Kinnoull 2 Violet 1 North End 2 Lochee Harp 2 This week Roselea are at home to Elmwood who were knocked out of the Scottish Junior Cup at Dunbar last week, losing 3-2. Kick Off is at 1.45pm.

Oakley Fall To Impressive Lea!!

Posted by Roy Gill at Jan 8, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
OAKLEY UTD vs MONTROSE ROSELEA Redwood Leisure Cup 08/01/2005 Roselea travelled to Super League side Oakley in the second round of the Redwood Leisure Cup, which is contested between Tayside & Fife clubs. Although Oakley are currently bottom of the East Region Super League this would be a challenge to see how Roselea are progressing. The Oakley side included former Alloa stalwart Willie Newbigging as player manager and former Montrose and Dundee defender Gary Paterson. The match was never in doubt despite the heavy rain the previous evening but the pitch was rather heavy and the “four seasons” weather made conditions very difficult. Roselea changed from their more familiar 4-4-2 formation to a 4-5-1. John Wands was in goals with his back four being Matt Miller, Dean Milne, Chris Masson and Paul Whyte.New signing,Wayne Keith & Scott Findlater were the wide midfielders and David Craig, Kevin Crawford & Eric Watson were in the centre with the latter two expected to get forward to support Colin Page in the lone strikers role. On the bench were Duncan Croall, Jai Clayton, Lee Walker, Chris Simpson & Ross Mcleod. For the first time this season David Balfour had the welcome problem of having leaving Paul Ross and Luke Myers out. Roselea kicked off with a strong wind at their backs and were first to threaten when a inswinging free kick from Colin page was narrowly missed by Paul Whyte. Whyte then found himself in the book for a late challenge in 10 minutes. Oakley opened the scoring in 12 minutes after a break on the left. The Roselea defence failed to clear the first effort, which was blocked by Wands and the striker followed up to stroke the ball into the corner of the net. Gary Paterson was fortunate to only receive a booking after clashing with Eric Watson. Moments later he went in late on Watson again but escaped as the referee had his back to the incident. Oakley then had another chance but Wands stood firm and blocked the shot. Roselea almost got an equaliser in 23 minutes when Eric Watson challenged the keeper from a Whyte cross. The ball broke and was heading goalbound but Newbigging cleared the danger. In 25 minutes Paul Whyte went close from a Colin Page corner, just failing to keep his header below the bar. With 37 minutes on the clock, good work by Miller and Findlater resulted in a powerful shot by Crawford but the Oakley keeper held well. Oakley retaliated and Wands then had to be alert to deal with a well struck shot from inside the box. The game erupted on the stroke of half-time. Eric Watson found himself right through with the keeper to beat, the keeper made no effort to get the ball and scythed Watson down. The referee awarded a penalty but then consulted his linesman and correctly awared Roselea a free kick just outside the box. Oakley keeper Kevin Smith was red carded and Oakley duly brought on their normal keeper Roy Ness who was returning from suspension. Once everything settled down Colin Page was slightly high with his effort from the free kick. Half Time Oakley 1 Roselea 0 Three minutes into the second half Roselea equalised from the penalty spot. Scott Findlater gave Oakley a taste of what they were in for and outpaced Gary Paterson. Paterson chopped Findlater down on the corner of the penalty area and was surprisingly not spoken to by the referee considering he was the last man. Chris Masson stepped up and made his usual job of striking the ball into the corner of the net. Roselea were on fire and Findlater was having great joy on the right flank. Eric Watson narrowly missed a cross from Findlater in 50 minutes. In 52 minutes Roselea took a deserved lead when David Craig shrugged of three challenges on the right hand side and sent in a beautiful cross to Eric Watson. Watson swivelled with his back to goal and stroked the ball into the corner. Roselea were beginning to rip Oakley to shreds and Page, Craig and Crawford all had chances to extend the lead but conditions made finishing difficult. Colin Page finally got his deserved goal with 15 minutes to go after Eric Watson split the defence with a pass, Page drew the keeper before drilling a left footed shot into the right hand corner of the net from 20 yards. Chris Simpson then replaced the tiring Page who had put a massive effort for his side. Wayne Keith who had a great debut was replaced by fellow debutant Jai Clayton with 10 minutes remaining after picking up an injury. Oakley pulled a goal back with 5 minutes remaining. The ball was cut back from the bye line and when Milne slipped the ball broke to an Oakley striker and although Wands blocked the effort the ball squirmed into the net. Oakley then laid siege on the Roselea goal with several corners going in. Oakley should have equalised from one when the striker headed over with the goal at his mercy. Final Score: Oakley 2 Roselea 3 A very deserved victory for Roselea and although the sending off changed the game in Roselea’s favour they certainly held their own up to that point and could argue that they had the better chances. Roselea’s second half performance was very pleasing and showed that they will not be out of their depth if they reach this level. The win puts Roselea into the last 16 of this competition.
