Elisa F, Junior forward at The Village School, was recently named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-State basketball team for Large Private Schools. TABC not only includes players from TAPPS, but it encompasses every private school in the entire state of Texas, including the SPC, TCAL, and other athletic governing bodies. Elisa was a 1st team All-District and 2nd team All-State selection for TAPPS 4A. She also earned Academic All-State for her outstanding performance in the classroom. Her most recent award from the TABC further recognizes the success she was able to achieve this season on an even broader scale. Congratulations to Elisa on a phenomenal year!

On Monday, April 4th, the Varsity boys, JV boys, and Varsity girls golf teams competed in the Baytown Christian Tournament at Newport Country Club. It was a perfect day to be on the course, with 60 degree weather at the time the golfers teed off, which warmed up to a comfortable 80 degrees at the end of their round. This particular tournament was the last preparation tournament before next week’s TAPPS District Tournament. That being said, our golfers showed they are primed for a strong District Tournament next week after a strong performance today. With one of the top Varsity boy golfers sick, the boys called up JV golfer, Jincheng T, and also started Freshman, Sebastian A. This was a great opportunity for the team to show the depth of their program, and the development of their younger golfers. These young guys didn’t disappoint. Jincheng T finished 3rd on team after posting an 82! The Vikings were led by a pair of Seniors, Fraser K and Justin V, who both posted a 79, which earned them a T-5 finish. The Vikings posted a respectable 329 team score, which earned them 2nd place in the tournament. Also notable for the Vikings was Freshman, and State Tennis qualifier, Amit K, who posted an 86. This Vikings team is certainly enjoying the success of their present season, but the future looks bright for this bunch!

The girls team was highlighted by Junior golfer and lone State qualifier from last season, Mariana O, who finished with her season best score of 86. It was a tough course, and the scores were slightly higher than normal, but Mariana still shot her best round. She fell just 2 strokes behind last year’s TAPPS 4A State Champion, who was also in the field.

Great job by all of the golfers who competed in the tournament and good luck at next week’s TAPPS 4A District Tournament! Go Vikings!

Each year our district tennis season concludes with a large tournament in which all the high schools participate. This year the district tournament was played over two days this past week (3/29 and 3/30) at Memorial Park, and indoors at Chancellor’s Tennis Center. Playing for the Village School were the following student-athletes:

Girls

  1. Singles: Helen Z
  2. Singles: Femke N
  3. Doubles: Divya R & Paulina D
  4. Doubles: Patricia P-B & Katie W

Boys

  1. Singles: Shaunak S
  2. Singles: Amit K
  3. Doubles: Inigo A-O & Justus V
  4. Doubles: Parin T & Yash A

The girls doubles and boys singles kicked off the first morning’s matches. Although both our girls’ doubles teams lost their first round match, both teams displayed some excellent shot-making, and Divya and Paulina extended their first set to a tiebreaker. Meanwhile, the boys singles lines of Shanuak and Amit both breezed through their first round matches.

The girls’ singles and boys’ doubles went on-court around 9:30am. Femke unfortunately drew the #3 seed in the first round, and although she lost, Femke courageously accepted a singles role in this her first year playing tennis. Helen Z won her first round match convincingly. On the boys’ doubles side, Inigo and Justus dispatched their first round opponents, while Parin and Yash outlasted their opponents 6-2, 6-4.

In the second round of match play Helen lost to the #2 seed, which ended the tournament for the Village girls. Parin and Yash lost to the #2 seed, but their 1st round win would later secure the boys their team championship. In singles Amit battled a sore arm but managed to defeat his older, bigger, and stronger opponent in straight sets. Meanwhile, on an adjacent court Shaunak suffered through bad leg cramps but prevailed in straight sets also. And in doubles Justus and Inigo again breezed through their match.

Rain then halted play for the day, and we resumed at 8am the next morning indoors at Chancellor’s. While Amit stayed home to let his injured arm heal, Shaunak faced a hot #3 seed in the semifinals and, after a fine tournament, bowed out 2 and 2. Inigo and Justus won their semifinal match fairly quickly, which set up a rematch with last year’s district champs from Emery. On this day the Emery team was better, defeating our guys 6-2, 6-4. We expect to face them again, however, at the state tournament on 4/11 and 12.

The points earned by the Village boys over the two days of match play was enough to earn the district team championship for 2016. Please be sure to congratulate all our players for a fine district season and tournament!
