Winning a State Championship is never easy. Trying to repeat as State Champions is even harder. The 2015-16 Varsity Boys Soccer team entered this season with lofty expectations, hoping to repeat as TAPPS 4A State Champions. Those expectations bring a tremendous amount of pressure. It’s all part of being a champion. They also lost the element of surprise by being the relative “unknown” last year, to being the team that everyone wanted to beat this year. On a nightly basis, we were going to get the other team’s A-game. If you don’t come ready to play, you can get beat. So how did this team manage to stay focused? Simple. They weren’t just competing against their opponent. They were competing against history. They wanted more for themselves. They wanted to break records. Goals scored, goals conceded, win percentage, shutouts in a season, repeating as District Champions, repeating as Regional Champions, and for the grand finale, repeating as TAPPS 4A State Champions. You can check off all of those boxes. With all of those accomplishments, this team maintained its humility, ingratiated themselves into the community, and carried themselves with the highest level of character.

“This season was full of moments where different players stepped up and that is what made it a success! From the start of the year, we knew we had a good team. It was about how hard the boys were going to work that determined how far we would go. We went through our fair share of adversity, but we did not let that stop us. Players started stepping up and they realized that they needed to work hard to win state again. Entering playoffs we knew that we would get everyone’s best shot. Winning the State Championship the year before, we knew we had a target on our back and each opponent wanted to be the team that took us down. Throughout all of playoffs, our whole team stepped up, led my Seniors, Ross B, Fraser K, and Michael W, the whole team dug deep and played their way into a State Championship game. Facing a team who had won 4 of the last 5 State Championships, we knew we would have our hands full. Once again, the team stepped up, led my Ross B’s two goals, Junior Goaltender Wassim G, was a wall in the back conceding none, and making big save after big save. I am so proud of this team. Not only for our accomplishment of winning State, but for their attitude on and off the field, their resilience under tremendous pressure and adversity, and their relentless pursuit of one common goal.” -Coach Christian Guevara

This team, from its players, managers, and coaches, has made The Village School proud. Thank you for your commitment to each other and your school. Your accomplishment will forever be remembered and is a permanent fixture in Viking history. Congratulations and Go Vikings!
