Posted by William Haehl at Jan 23, 2001 11:36PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Staff and Special Reports January 24, 2001 Walking off the floor at halftime with a two-point lead over Shelby County rival Triton Central, Shelbyville freshman guard Gretchen Haehl must have felt pretty bad. She had fouled out and played poorly in the then-Class 3A No. 3 Golden Bears upset loss to Delta on Saturday. And Tuesday night against the Class 2A No. 4 Tigers, Haehl was 2-of-9 from the field at the half and had only six points. "We felt good," said Haehl of the now-No. 7 Golden Bears at the half of their eventual 70-55 win over visiting Triton Central (16-1). "We knew we could come out and wear them down and that's what we did." Haehl was 7-of-10 from the field in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points and helped her teammates force 28 turnovers. Haehl also had six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Her twin sister, Gwen, added 10 points for Shelbyville (14-2). For Triton Central, 6-0 junior forward Jessica Scherer led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Mt. Vernon pins 1st loss on Shelbyville Marauders' Kirby inflicts major damage in win over Class 3A, No. 3 Golden Bears. Special Reports Indianapolis Star January 14, 2001 In one of the biggest games of the season in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, one of the smallest players was the difference. Allisa Kirby, a 5-4 guard, scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead visiting Mt. Vernon past Class 3A No. 3 Shelbyville on Saturday. The Evansville-bound Kirby helped the defending conference-champion Marauders erase a four-point halftime deficit with a 33-18 surge over the final two quarters. Shelbyville (12-1, 5-1) has one conference game remaining. Mt. Vernon is 9-4, 4-0. Sarah Laird scored 11 points for Golden Bears, who pulled ahead 17-15 after one quarter and led 31-27 at halftime. Mt. Vernon began taking over in the third quarter with a 17-11 run that put it up 44-42 going into the final period. Click on title to see article from Shelbyville News

With "Hoosierland Report" co-founder, Nick Ray, and Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Gary Donna in attendence, the Golden Bears beat a solid Whiteland team featuring 2002 All-State candidate Megan Liffick. The Bears had a ten point lead at half and stretched it to 19 by the end of the contest to go to 12-0. Reported also on Hoosierland Report: WHITELAND, IN - The 3A #3 Shelbyville Golden Bears (12-0) broke open a close game towards the end of the first half and pulled away from the host Warriors for a 69-50 win. Senior Sarah Laird (5'7 2G) led the scoring for the winners with 18 points while two freshmen, Gretchen Haehl (5'5 PG) and Gwen Haehl (5'7 G), and a sophomore, Katie Douglas (6'0 C), all had 10 points to help the cause. The Golden Bears are experiencing a new found success this year under fairly new coach John Fair and are undefeated this late in the season for the first time ever. Here is what starting freshman point guard Gretchen Haehl had to say on the subject, "It's a lot of fun winning all of the time and it feels great, but it also puts more pressure on you to keep winning because everyone wants to beat you."
