Walking off the floor at halftime with a two-point lead over Shelby County rival Triton Central, Shelbyville freshman guard Gretchen Haehl must have felt pretty bad.
She had fouled out and played poorly in the then-Class 3A No. 3 Golden Bears upset loss to Delta on Saturday. And Tuesday night against the Class 2A No. 4 Tigers, Haehl was 2-of-9 from the field at the half and had only six points.
"We felt good," said Haehl of the now-No. 7 Golden Bears at the half of their eventual 70-55 win over visiting Triton Central (16-1). "We knew we could come out and wear them down and that's what we did."
Haehl was 7-of-10 from the field in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points and helped her teammates force 28 turnovers.
Haehl also had six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Her twin sister, Gwen, added 10 points for Shelbyville (14-2).
For Triton Central, 6-0 junior forward Jessica Scherer led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
