HOW THE LEAGUE WORKS

HOW THE LEAGUE WORKS
The league starts in September with tryouts/evaluations from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on September 21 and 28, 2016. The first league game will be October 5, 2016. Games are played in four gyms at three different schools. At Bill Crothers Secondary School we play in one of the lower gyms and a second gym two floors above the first gym. We also have single gyms at Bur Oak Secondary School as well as at Markham District High School. Please click on the “direction” tab to find their locations.

The season’s cost is $250 per player. League reversible shirts are required by all players and can be reused in subsequent years. They cost $45. Purchases are done online, at the time of registration.
We play every Wednesday evening, except for school closings such as spring break, Christmas break etc., until the end of March. Playoffs start and finish in April. All games are refereed by carded officials. Registration is done individually. Registered names are put into a draft where captains will choose their teams at the start of each new season. There are no team entries. The evaluation locations on September 21 and 28 will be at Markham District High School for the Masters Division while the Elite will be at Bill Crothers Secondary School in the lower gym and Champions will be at Bill Crothers Secondary School in the upper gym.

A draft of individual players is held by team captains before the start of each season. In this way the teams are reshuffled every year. New players are accepted into the league based on their performance at the evaluation nights. Returning players are given priority over new players and will always be drafted. Evaluation scrimmages held on September 21 and 28 are mandatory for new players in order for the captains to evaluate their choices. New and returning players must register, pay in full and agree to the waiver form prior to stepping onto the court at the evaluation nights. Any returning player who has not registered, paid and agreed to the waiver will not be entered into the draft and has forfeited his place in the league. Any new player that is not chosen in the draft will have a full refund emailed to him.
There are three divisions in the Markham Men’s Basketball League.

1) Masters Division. This is restricted to players that are 48+. If a player is 48+, he has the option to play in any of the divisions that are offered. Your choice will depend on your confidence and conditioning level.
2) Elite Division. This is our highest level of play and is open to players that are 18+ and have completed high school.
3) Champions Division. This is our second level of play and is also highly competitive. This is open to players that are 18+ and have completed high school.
