Little League's New Intermediate Division

Posted by Ken Cicalo on Nov 27 2012 at 04:00PM PST in Spring 2016
Beginning with the Spring 2013 season Little League is introducing the new Intermediate Division, perhaps the most significant change in the structure of Little League in the last 30 years.

Clairemont Hilltoppers is excited to announce that we will be offering this great new division in the regular season for the first time.

Previously known as the 50/70 division, Hilltoppers players have experimented with this style of play during the past two Fall Ball seasons with universal enjoyment.

Featuring a pitching distance of 50 feet and base paths of 70 feet, this new division will be for players who are league-age 11 & 12. Intermediate will replace the traditional Majors division within our league. It will include full postseason tournament opportunities, including a World Series. A 13-year-old who feels strongly that they are not ready for Juniors will also be allowed to play Intermediate, but they will not be eligible for All-Stars.

The Intermediate division serves as a bridge between the current “Little League” size field (46’ pitching distance, 60’ base paths) and a standard baseball diamond with 60.5’ pitching and 90’ base paths. Some of the differences in the new division compared to Majors include, leadoffs, pickoffs, headfirst slides and 7-inning games. Bat rules for this new division are still being finalized. Please don’t purchase a bat for either Juniors or Intermediate play until we get final word from Little League Baseball.
