Sherdel closed out the game giving up one run and benefiting from a beautiful double-play by 2B Andrew McElwain.

The Hustler bats were hot on this chilly day, producing six hits in game one and eleven in game two. New addition Gabe Torres got things started in game one with a run-scoring single to left followed by Ryan Bennett’s RBI liner to right. JT Sachar led off the third with a sharp single to left center and was brought home with a laced RBI double by DeLisi to the gap in right center. The 10U Frederick Hustlers got their season underway on Saturday, April 2nd, playing in the Long Horn tournament in Leesburg, Virginia. The first game had the Hustlers paired up with PG Select Blue Sox. Ryan Jones pitched a scoreless 1st, and the Hustlers quickly put two on the board in the bottom of the first as Camren Baker and Jones scored. PG Select tied the game in the second, and went ahead in the top of the 3rd by a run. But the Hustlers responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the third and held on to win a tight 5-4 victory. Jones pitched the first two innings, while Mason Miller pitched the middle inning, and Landon Johnson came on in the last two innings to shutdown PG Select. Each of them pitched well. This game was about pitching and defense, as each team only had four hits. The young hustlers committed only one error in the game. Baker, Jones, Miller, and Landon Johnson each had one hit for the Hustlers.

The second game had the Hustlers facing the Potomac Riverdogs. The Riverdogs scored 5 runs in the first 3 innings, but could not keep up with the hot Hustler bats, as the Hustlers plated 3 in the first, 4 in the second, and 4 more in the 3rd. The game was called after 4 innings due to the time limit, and the Hustlers came away with a 12-5 victory. Brett Lucas led the way with 2 doubles, one which was a monster shot to right center that bounced off the top of the fence and back into the field of play. Mason Miller and Jaxson Wood each hit long doubles in the game also. Camren Baker, Ryan Jones, Connor Allen, Miller, Landon Johnson, Logan Malachowski, Landon Tolbert, and Wood each had 1 hit. Tyler Schroyer pitched the first two innings, and Brett Lucas pitched the last two innings in the win.

Unfortunately the tournament was canceled Sunday due to the weather. The Hustlers are back in action next weekend, starting CRAB league play

The 12U Hustlers played uninspired baseball over the weekend and found themselves heading back from the Longhorn Tournament in Leesburg, VA earlier than expected. The Hustlers got a strong combined pitching effort from Nick DeLisi, Tyler Prather and Matt Cunningham under the lights on Friday night and beat a solid Fielder’s Choice team from Purcellville 5-3. With a chance to win their pool on Saturday morning, the “black and gold” came out flat and lost to PG Select 11-5. “We didn’t compete. We simply went thru the motions - it was a very disappointing performance,” noted Coach Main. One bright spot in the game, however, was the emergence of newly acquired LHP Luke Schlimm. “He’s extremely crafty. He has an idea – he’s going to be a good one,” added Main. The Hustlers responded to the challenge and showed the determination and grit that’s become a trademark of the program in the consolation game on Saturday night. Down 4-2 heading into the last inning, the Virginia Force padded their lead to 6-2 after a Hustler miscue. With the Forces’ starting pitcher still on the mound, the Hustlers went to work in the bottom of the sixth. Dustin Isanogle led off with a liner to center. DeLisi gave the Hustlers hope with a "take this" two-run homer to left center. Cunningham answered with a solo shot to left (his second of the night) sending the pitcher to the showers and the Hustler faithful into a frenzy. Down 6-5 and no outs, Tyler Prather greeted the reliever with a sharp single to left and Ryan Bennett followed with a drive to right that went off the right fielder’s glove. The Hustlers had second and third with no outs. Unfortunately, the next three hitters struck out and the rally fell short. JT Sachar gave the Hustlers a huge lift pitching four solid innings and Cunningham was outstanding in his two frames.

The Hustlers are back in action Sunday, October 4, 1:00pm and 3:00pm, at the Yellow Springs baseball complex against the MD Warriors.

Fall Baseball Update

Posted by Wayne Main at Sep 21, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The 2016 12U Hustlers are in full-swing, Fall baseball mode. “We’ve added some new kids to go with our strong core group so there’s really a feeling of optimism and excitement in the air,“ noted Coach Main. “The kids are working hard, the attitudes are amazing, and the results have been impressive to say the least.” In the past two weekends, the Hustlers have tangled with three quality teams: the Olney Pirates, MD Redbirds and the Catoctin Baseball Club. “All three of these clubs are very well coached and the kids play hard so it was satisfying to see our guys getting after it,” added Coach Main. “We hit the ball this past weekend, by far, the best in the two-plus years that this group has been together, and I’m talking right thru the entire lineup.” The Hustlers played the always tough Olney Pirates to a 2-2 tie in a rain-shortened game on the opening weekend, and then turned around and lost two slugfest games (13-12, 15-13) to the extremely talented Redbird team this past Saturday. “Despite being on the wrong end of the score, we took a lot of positives out of these two games because the Redbirds are very good and we had leads going into the last inning of both games; we just didn’t finish,” noted Coach Main. “We squared up balls from gap to gap. I’m thinking we’ll look back at some point and see these games as a turning point for many of our guys.” Sunday’s doubleheader against the Catoctin Baseball Club (CBC) which featured several of the talented players from the Thurmont Little League Mid-Atlantic Regional Runner-up team gave plenty of reason for the optimism. The Hustlers scored ten runs in the first inning of game one and eight runs in the first inning of game two on the way to two wins. The Hustlers are back in action on Friday night in Leesburg, VA, as part of the Longhorn Tournament where they will face Fielder’s Choice (VA).
