12U Hustlers Stumble in Game Two

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 24, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The 12U Frederick Hustlers continued to master their Sunday Jekyll and Hyde act pounding Backyard University 20-7 in the opener and losing 2-0 to Gambrills in the nightcap. The boys from Frederick recorded 16 hits in game one and kept the pedal to the floor scoring in all five innings. Tyler Prather had four hits, and JT Sachar and Nick DeLisi each had three in a game shortened by the run-rule. Dustin Isanogle and Luke Schlimm each chipped in with two. Ryan Talbert, Schlimm and Jake Sherdel each doubled. Gambrill’s Eddie Sargent had other ideas in game two. Sargent, playing more like a General, limited the Hustlers to three hits – two by Sachar and one by Ryan Bennett. The Hustlers only struck out twice but simply couldn’t get anything going against a quality arm. Nick DeLisi worked the first four innings and was the hard luck loser. DeLisi walked the first two batters of the game and gave up a single to Daray Murdock and that was the difference. DeLisi only surrendered three hits in four innings and struck out six. Luke Schlimm worked a perfect 5th and 6th to give the Hustlers a chance. The Hustlers got runners on 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 6th and it looked like there would be some Hustler magic. Sargent induced a groundout to 3rd to record a complete game shutout. The Hustlers JT Sachar had an impressive day going 5-6 with two walks and four runs.

The Hustlers play host to the HCYP Raiders on Wednesday before heading to Ripken in Aberdeen on the weekend for the Gold Glove Classic.

Another Sunday Split for the Hustlers

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 16, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hickory’s Parker McIlhenney continued his mastery over the Hustlers and led his team to a 5-3 win in the opener. The Hustlers bounced back in the nightcap to beat Catoctin 10-3 behind the pitching of Luke Schlimm and Matt Cunningham, and the hitting of Nick DeLisi and Ryan Talbert.

McIlhenney has had his share of success against the Hustlers and Sunday was no different. He held the Hustlers to three hits and one run over four innings. Nick DeLisi started on the mound for the Hustlers and tossed three solid innings. He only allowed two hits but the Hornets were aggressive on the bases and hit behind runners to scratch out two runs.  Matt Cunningham pitched the 4th and 5th innings and only allowed one run. The Hustlers scored one in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2 and had the top of the order coming up in the 6th. Unfortunately, Hickory tacked on two runs in the top of the 6th on a walk, a triple and a double. The Hustlers did not go quietly however as they scored once in the bottom half and had a runner on third with the tying run at the plate when the game ended on a pop out. JT Sachar, DeLisi and Gabe Torres had singles and Dustin Isanogle and Tyler Prather each doubled in runs in a losing effort.

The Hustlers wasted no time getting started in game two. The Hustlers scored five times in the first frame. DeLisi singled, Prather reached on an error, Torres ripped a line drive to left center, Ryan Talbert doubled high off the fence and Isanogle was hit by the pitch. The Hustlers scored two more in the second and one in the third on a double by Cunningham, and singles by DeLisi, Prather, Talbert and Ryan Bennett. Luke Schlimm was dominant on the hill and near perfect for three innings with six strikeouts. He walked one hitter but quickly picked the runner off first base. Schlimm ran into a little trouble in the 4th highlighted by a three-run homer by Catoctin’s Josh Skowronski. Schlimm settled down and ended the inning with two more strikeouts. Cunningham worked the 5th and 6th and had two strikeouts. DeLisi finished 2-3 and Talbert was 3-3 with two doubles.

Prather, Sherdel Power Hustlers

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 14, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Tyler “T” Prather and Jake “The Snake” Sherdel played long ball and Nick DeLisi was spectacular on the mound as the Hustlers throttled the Maryland Warriors 10-5 on a warm and comfortable night at the ballpark. DeLisi worked three solid innings and allowed his offense to go to work. The Hustlers leadoff man Josh “JT” Sachar found his groove and got the black and gold going in the first with a double to left center. DeLisi followed with a single before Prather unleashed a three-run bomb to straight away center. The home team tacked on two more in the second when Luke Schlimm walked before Sherdel ripped a two run shot over the fence in left field. The Hustlers never looked back. The Hustlers added four more in the fifth as Sachar drew a leadoff walk, and Prather, Matt Cunningham and Gabe Torres followed with RBI singles. Ryan Talbert closed out the scoring with a scorching two-run line drive off the fence in left center. DeLisi finished the game with two hits including a double, and Prather was 2-2 with a homerun, SAC fly and five RBIs. DeLisi tossed three innings allowing one earned run on a scratch single with four strikeouts. Cunningham worked the 4th and 5th and was effective limiting the Warriors to just one run. Sachar worked the 6th and Talbert the 7th as the Hustlers ran their CRAB League record to 4-1.

The Hustlers are scheduled for two games on Sunday at Yellow Springs against Hickory and Catoctin. Game one is slated to begin at noon.

Hustlers Split Sunday Round-Robin Action

Posted by Wayne Main at Apr 10, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Frederick Hustlers (3-1) played host to Gambrills High Heat and BCC Big Train in round-robin action on Sunday and came away with a split – losing the opener to Gambrills 13-8 and beating BCC 14-7 in the late game. Gambrills came in hot after winning the Annapolis Open the previous weekend but it looked like the Hustlers might have the answer. Nick DeLisi started on the hill and was masterful for three innings. He allowed no hits, no runs and had five strikeouts. In the meantime, the Hustlers scored three in the second and tacked on one more in the third to take what seemed like a commanding lead. Marshall Mott, Andrew McElwain and Luke Schlimm came up with the big run-scoring hits. Mott tossed a scoreless fourth before running into trouble in the fifth. The Hustlers used three pitchers in the fifth and when the inning was over, Gambrills had scored 13 times. The Hustlers showed heart and refused to quit however. DeLisi drew a leadoff walk in the 6th and Matt Cunningham and Tyler Prather followed with singles. Gabe Torres cleared the bases with a line drive missile over the fence in left center but it turned out to be too little too late.

The Hustlers quickly put game one behind them and responded in game two. After two quick outs to start the first, DeLisi reached on an error and the Hustlers made the Big Train pay. Cunningham singled, Mott homered, Prather singled, Torres doubled, McElwain singled and Ryan Talbert doubled. The Hustlers put five runs on the board. The black and gold followed that up with six more runs in the second highlighted by a Prather grand slam. Schlimm tossed three innings and only allowed one run on four hits and had three strikeouts. Mott worked a hitless 5th and 6th inning with three strikeouts and no runs. On the day, Torres was 3-4 with a homerun and two doubles, Prather was 3-6 with a homerun, Mott was 3-7 with a homerun, and McElwain was 3-6.

The Hustlers are back in action at Yellow Springs on Thursday against the MD Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 5:45pm.
