Waldron’s No. 1 doubles team advances

GREENWOOD — Nothing to lose.
That was the mindset of the Shelbyville High School girls’ tennis team Tuesday in the Center Grove Regional.
And while the scoreboard may have read that the Lady Golden Bears suffered a season ending 5-0 setback against 17th-ranked Greenwood (17-2), head coach Basem Shammas said the score is not a true indicator.
“We had a good season, a good record and we won a sectional championship. I am proud of the girls. We competed. I was a little worried we would be overwhelmed against a very good team, but we battled,” Shammas said.
The Lady Woodmen dropped just seven games in five matches to the Lady Golden Bears (11-8), and only three games in the three singles contests.
Greenwood No. 1 singles player Jackie Kawamoto wasted little time dispatching Shelbyville’s Jordan Wise, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Jade Kawamoto earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Monica Cooper, and Greenwood’s Makenzie Estrem earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Maddie Clark.
The No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Hundall and Mattie White upended Shelbyville’s Paige Durphey and Meghan Thornburg, 6-1, 6-0.
Greenwood’s No. 2 doubles team of Brittany Toney and Allison Youngman defeated Christina Douglas and Marena Drake, 6-2, 6-1.
“We are a young team, and I hope this serves as a learning experience and that we can raise our level of play to theirs. It all depends on what we do this summer. We will have to come out and work,” Shammas said.
Dalley, Harker advance
After earning a hard-fought three-set win recently over Morristown’s top doubles tandem, Waldron’s No. 1 doubles team of Kelly Dalley and Leanna Harker got the win that mattered most.
On Tuesday in the IHSAA Doubles Sectional Tournament, the Lady Mohawks duo knocked off Morristown’s No. 1 doubles team of Chelsea Platt and Briley Williams, 6-3, 6-4 in a match played at Shelbyville High School.
With the win, Waldron advanced to a Wednesday match at Center Grove.
“I was shocked. I am very proud of the girls, they went 14-4 but today was not our day. They have nothing to hold their heads down about,” Morristown coach Pat Kohne said.
With the win, Harker and Dalley advanced to 8-4 on the year and coach Jim Bramlett’s final season continues.
“I am proud. We won in three sets the last time we played them and we talked about strategy. Both Kelly and Leanna played very well and up to their potential. We got some momentum early. Morristown is a very good team, and tonight, it was our night. I thought they would be very good this year,” Bramlett said.

Fulfilled.
That is how the Shelbyville High School girls’ tennis team and coach Basem Shammas felt after thumping Morristown 4-1 Friday in the sectional championship tilt played at Shelbyville.
With the win, the Lady Golden Bears (11-7) advance to the regional tournament Tuesday, where they will play 17th-ranked Greenwood (16-2) at 4:30 p.m. at Center Grove. The Lady Woodmen captured their first sectional crown since 2004, defeating Whiteland 4-1.
The other regionals semifinal features 16th-ranked Roncalli (19-1) against Southport (5-13).
“I am happy for them. Winning a sectional championship is always a huge accomplishment and something that they can say they did. We have played well all season, and I was proud with how the girls came out focused and it showed in their scores,” Shammas said.
Did it ever, as the Lady Golden Bears surrendered only five games in three singles matches.
At No. 1 singles, Shelbyville’s Jordan Wise posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sarah Albrecht.
Monica Cooper earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Brooke Yarnell.
Maddie Clark earned a 6-0 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Madison Smith.
While his singles players were dominant, Shammas acknowledged he was not surprised.
“No. Our singles players have played well all season, especially against the top teams. They have played solid,” Shammas said.
Morristown’s lone win came at No. 1 doubles as Briley Williams and Chelsea Platt earned a 6-4, 6-3 win to advance to the sectional doubles tournament that begins at Center Grove on Tuesday. The Morristown pair are 14-3 this season.
Williams and Platt will be joined at the sectional by Waldron’s Kelly Dalley and Leanna Harker (7-3), who won their lone sectional match Thursday against Shelbyville.
Shelbyville’s No. 2 doubles team of Marena Drake and Christina Douglas held off Morristown’s Megan Battles and Amy Gregory 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3.
With the sectional trophy in its grasp, Shelbyville will now look to compete with a top Greenwood team.
“They have a very good No. 1 and No. 2. We will enjoy it and do our best. We’ll see what we can do. I told the girls it will be a learning experience for us, but the thing is, we have nothing to lose,” Shammas said.

Ecker leaving Shelbyville to become New Castle AD

For the last four years, Brandon Ecker has learned the ins and outs of a high school athletic department while serving as assistant athletic director at Shelbyville High School.
On Monday, Ecker was handed the reins of one of the most well-known prep athletic departments in the state. Ecker, a 2000 Centerville graduate, was named the new athletic director at New Castle High School, replacing Mike Bergum, who is leaving to become the athletic director at Earlham College in Richmond.
“I knew my chance would come. I feel like I have the ability to do this job,” said Ecker. “I just didn’t know it would come at such a prestigious program. I didn’t think this would be my first chance. I am definitely excited to get it.”
Ecker played tennis and wrestled while at Centerville, where his father, Randy, is the longtime tennis coach. Ecker played tennis at Huntington College and is currently working on his master’s degree in Athletic Administration.
“At New Castle, they have a long tradition of stability,” said Ecker, who will turn 30 on June 3. “They were looking for someone young and energetic. I think I fit that bill.”
Bergum, who was the New Castle athletic director for 16 years, begins his duties at Earlham on June 1. Ecker will finish his spring sports duties at Shelbyville while, at the same time, transitioning to his new position at New Castle – home of the world’s largest high school gymnasium.
“It’s a big place. There is a lot of tradition,” said Ecker. “I want to make sure I uphold the traditions they have while trying to bring them forward into 2012. I think the biggest thing is learning the New Castle tradition. There are so many unknowns. I have so many questions right now for Mike Bergum and his athletic secretary.”
Ecker is thankful for his time at Shelbyville and will always consider himself part of the Golden Bear family.
“I’ve been here four years but it feels like one. It’s gone by quick,” said Ecker. “I’ve enjoyed my time here. I’ve worked with an amazing staff. I’ve gotten training from one of the better athletic directors in the state of Indiana in Paul Heidenreich. I feel like that will pay dividends for me in the future.”
