Over the last few years, the Waldron High School girls’ tennis team had given head coach Jim Bramlett much to smile about.

Despite a loss Thursday to Shelbyville in the sectional semifinals, the veteran coach was still able to smile after watching the Lady Mohawks fall 4-1 in his final match as coach.

“We wanted to play our best, and I feel like we did that. We knew it would be very tough against a very good Shelbyville team. The future is very bright for Waldron,” Bramlett said.

With the win, Shelbyville advanced to the championship against Morristown, which defeated Triton Central for the third time this season by a score of 3-2.

The Lady Golden Bears surrendered only one game in three singles matches.

At No. 1 singles, Jordan Wise cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Monica Cooper earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Elaine Knepp at No. 2 singles. Maddie Clark continued her impressive season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Taylor Woods at No. 3 singles.

Shelbyville’s other win came at No. 2 doubles as Marena Drake and Christina Douglas earned a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Waldron was able to pick up a win as Leanna Harker and Kelly Dalley posted a 7-6 (0), 7-5 win over Meghan Thornburg and Paige Durphey.

With the win, Harker and Dalley advance into the state doubles tournament beginning next week at Center Grove.

“I am very proud of Elaine. While she lost, she stayed in the points and improved a whole bunch since the beginning of the season. I was very pleased with our No. 1 doubles team,” Bramlett said.

Triton Central got a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles from Michelle Gardner, while Rebecca Silvola earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brooke Yarnell at No. 2 singles.

Morristown’s doubles play proved to be too much for Triton Central to overcome, as the Lady Yellow Jackets gave up just four games in two matches.

The No. 1 doubles duo of Briley Williams and Chelsea Platt defeated Lindsay Crum and Brittany Miller 6-1, 6-0, while Megan Battles and Amy Gregory defeated Erin Miller and Cayla Woodcock 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
