TOC CHAMPIONS - BREWERS

Ocean View Little League Brewers Win District 62 Tournament of Champions with
Walk-Off Homerun@ Sea View Little League

6.13.15 - OVLL BREWERS 3, FVLL ANGELS

The Fountain Valley Angels came out strong with a lead-off single in the top of the 1st by Terrell Jackson.  But Ocean View Little League’s defense wasn’t backing down.  Second baseman Michael Pantel made a great backhand play to get the second out of the inning and hold the runner at third and starting pitcher Brandon Wood finished the deal by striking out the Angel’s cleanup hitter to retire the side.  In the bottom of the first, the Brewers put the first run on the board off of Angels starting pitcher Sean Okawa with a single by Brewers Tristan Kennedy and a two-out double in the gap by cleanup hitter Nick Shenkman.  With the Brewers leading 1-0 going into the second, the game turned into a pitching and defensive battle.  Sean Okawa of the Angels was on a roll striking out 8 Brewers through three innings (Okawa struck out 14 batters total in the game).  Okawa was also huge at the plate and sent one over the fence in the top of the 4th inning to tie the game 1-1.  Defense and pitching continued to play a huge role in the game with Brewers Brandon Wood hitting his spots, striking out batters and getting ground balls.  The Brewers left fielder Jaxon Potter tracked down a towering fly ball for a clutch out and Matthew Scully made a huge play at third base to get key outs in the 4th and 5th innings.  The Angels defense came up huge as well with middle infielders Issac Salas and Paul Delacruz making big plays to get key outs in the 3rd and 4th innings.  Catching on both sides of the field was also dominant as the Angels Terrell Jackson blocked balls in the dirt and kept the Brewers running game silent.  Brewers starting catcher Tristan Kennedy was brilliant as well, as he kept the Angels runners from advancing throughout the game and anchored down his pitchers and defense.

Heading into the fifth inning with the game tied 1-1, Angels shortstop Paul Delacruz got things started with a lead-off double and came around to score the go-ahead run off of a hard hit ground ball by Chris Thorne.  But Brewers closer Nick Shenkman held strong limiting any additional runs by striking out 2 to finish the inning.  Heading into the bottom of the 6th, with the Angels leading 2-1, the Brewers were down to their final three outs of the season.  Jaxon Potter got things started reaching base on a walk.  Angels Okawa continued to deal, striking out the next two batters.  With the Brewers down to their last out and Luca Pantel at the plate, the Angels brought in their relief pitcher to finish the game.  The Angels reliever battled working Pantel into a 2-2 count, but Pantel came up huge with a walk-off 2 run home run to deep center field to catapult the Brewers to a 3-2 TOC Championship.  It was an amazing game with outstanding plays on both sides.

8/9
Wednesday, 7/22/15, OVLL 11, Aliso Viejo 8
OVLL Section 10 Champions

It seems like the 8/9 year old OVLL team plays their best baseball with their backs to the wall.  Much like they did in the District 62 tournament, this scrappy team again won 3 consecutive elimination games to capture the Section 10 crown.  In the championship game played at the OVLL field, home team Aliso Viejo (AVLL) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the 1st inning.  OVLL answered right back in the top of the 2nd with 4 runs of their own, with Carson Lane providing a key 2-rbi single.  AVLL reclaimed the lead with 2 runs in the 3rd to go up 6-4.  An rbi triple by Lane in the 4th pulled OVLL back to within a run at 6-5, but AVLL got that run back in the bottom of the 4th with a sacrifice fly to up their lead to 7-5 after 4 innings.  OVLL threw the biggest punch of the game with a 6-run 5th inning.  John Gates ignited the outburst with a big 2-run home run to tie the score 7-7, and Dylan Mayorga hit a key 2-run double with 2 outs to close out the rally.  It was and 11-7 OVLL lead once the top of the 5th was over.  The very tough AVLL squad tried to answer right back in the bottom of the 5th, but they left the bases loaded as they tallied 1 run to close the gap to 11-8.  That would prove to be the final score as OVLL closer Conner Wood retired AVLL in order in the 6th inning to preserve the victory and secure the Section 10 banner.  OVLL got production throughout their lineup with leadoff hitter Evyn Lewis reaching base safely in all 4 of his at bats while scoring 3 runs; and #9 hitter Gavin Clarke contributing 2 big rbi's at the other end of the lineup.  In between, Lane, Mayorga, Gates & Jett Burden each had multiple hits.

6/30/15, 7/1/15 & 7/2/15 (Championship District 62 Game)
OVLL District 62 Champions

The OVLL 8/9 All-Star team battled their way to capture the District 62 championship with wins on 3 consecutive days.  OVLL beat Huntington West LL 15-0 on Tuesday, 6/30/15, behind strong pitching from Dylan Mayorga & Conner Wood.  The offense was supplied by two 3-run HRs by Connor Adams, and another by Evyn Lewis.  On Wednesday, 7/1/15, OVLL beat HVLL 6-3 with a stellar pitching performance by John Gates, who allowed just 1 first-inning run over 5 strong innings.  Gates was supported by a 3-run 1st inning and a 3-run 4th inning, which was all that he needed.  The OVLL victory forced the deciding “if” game versus HVLL on Thursday 7/2/15.  OVLL took home the banner by winning 6-5 in a back-and-forth battle between these two evenly matched squads.  Starters Dylan Mayorga for OVLL & Noah Stockman for HVLL squared off for the first few innings, but neither was around for the final couple innings.  Andrew McKabney pitched a strong final 3 innings for HVLL.  For OVLL, Connor Adams pitched a scoreless 5th inning in relief of Mayorga.  With the game tied 5-5 after the 5th inning, OVLL’s Gavin Clarke knocked in the go-ahead run with a clutch single in the 6th inning.  Conner Wood came in for OVLL to close out the game by striking out the side in the bottom of the 6th as his team stormed the mound to congratulate him for the tournament-clinching victory.  Aaron Minnicucci came up big on offense for OVLL with 2 hits and 3 rbi’s.  Tony Martinez hit a long HR for the very strong HVLL team who battled to the final out.

Saturday, 6/20/15 – Ocean View Little League 12, Sea View Little League 3
Monday, 6/22/15 – Ocean View Little League 17, Fountain Valley Little League 3

The 8/9-year old Superstars team from Ocean View Little League started off their All-Star season with two great wins.  In game one on Saturday, June 20th, the team faced Seaview Little League and won by a score of 12-3.  Owen Eisen pitched four great innings and Connor Adams came in to round out the game on the mound in innings five and six.  Highlights of that game include a beautiful home run by Dylan Mayorga in the 1st inning straight out to center that drove in three runs.  Gavin Clarke had a double which was a shot to left field to drive in two runs in the fifth inning.  Aaron Minnicuci had a sweet single to drive in two more runs also in the fifth.  Evyn Lewis stopped everything behind the plate as catcher the entire game including making the final out at home plate with a great diving tag of the runner coming home.

In game two on Monday night, June 22nd, the boys won by a final score of 17-0.  It was a combined perfect game pitched by John Gates and Conner Wood.  The two shut out Fountain Valley Little League in a game that ended in four innings via the mercy rule.  Gates threw smoke for just a total of 34 pitches in three innings.  Wood came in to strike out the final three batters in the fourth inning.  They combined to strike out 11 of the 12 batters they faced.  Ocean View got five runs in each of the first three innings and two more in the fourth.  Carson Lane had a nice double in the 2nd inning through a gap to center field driving in two runs. Dylan Mayorga was on fire again in the second inning smacking a ball over the centerfield fence for his second 3-run homer in as many games.  OVLL showed a great discipline at the plate by working 11 walks.  Carson Lane, Dylan Mayorga, and Gavin Clarke were each a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate.
