Thursday, 5.28.15 - Hooks 5, Blue Wahoos 4
 
Tuesday, May 26th the Hooks faced the Blue Wahoos for the 2nd time in Tournament play. The Blue Wahoos took an early lead and were up 4-1 going into the 2nd inning.  That score was held until the 4th inning when the Hooks' bats got hot and they brought in 2 more runs.  During the 5th inning a hit by Chris Moeller brought in Joseph von Starschedel and the game was tied 4-4.  At the bottom of the 6th the game was still tied and they went into extra innings.  It took three extra innings but the Hooks came out on top with a ground ball by Jake Russell bringing in Nick Sanden for the 5-4 win.   
 
Tuesday, 5.19.15 - Hooks 16, Volcanoes 10
 
Tuesday, May 19th the Hooks faced the Volcanoes. The Volcanoes took an early lead and held it until the fourth inning. During the fourth inning, the tide turned when Matthew Haidl came in as pitcher for the Hooks.  With some great pitching by Matt, and some great hitting by the Hooks, the Hooks were able to take the lead.  Chris Moeller of the Hooks had his best showing ever at bat and really spurred on his teammates.   The final score was Hooks 16, Volcanoes 10.
 
Sunday, 5.17.15 -  Hooks 17, Seadogs 2
 
Hooks faced the Seadogs in the 2nd day of Tournament. The Hooks starting pitcher Nick Sanden had a great showing on the mound, with seven strikeouts, no walks, and only allowing three batters on base in four innings. In the top of the first inning, Vince VanNiekerk of the Hooks scored by stealing home, but the Seadogs answered back at the bottom of the inning when Donavan Farrell scored on a Matthew Quach hit.  The teams went into the second inning tied 1-1 but the Hooks took the lead and kept it the remainder of the game. Luke Alger was on fire at bat with a single and two doubles.  During the 6th inning the Hooks went through their entire line up, ending the inning with a 16 run lead. Drake Kellen came in at the bottom of the 6th to pitch for the Hooks and closed out the game.  The Seadogs scored one more run but it was not enough and the Hooks won the game 17-2. 
 
Saturday, 5.2.15 - Hooks 10, Mudcats 2
 
With some great pitching by both teams, the game was scoreless after the 1st inning.  During the 2nd inning Christian Maddy of the Hooks was hit with a pitch, took his base, and that set off a 5 run rally by the Hooks. In the 3rd inning, Brady Roldan of the Naturals got on base, stole a couple bases, and was hit home with an RBI single, putting the score at 5-1. The 4th inning was scoreless. During the 5th inning the Hooks got on a hot streak with a triple, double and single by Noah Kanowsky, Luke Alger and Jake Russell respectively.  The Naturals scored 1 more run in the 5th but it was not enough and the Hooks won the game 10-2.  Nick Sanden of the Hooks was the MVP of this game.  He struck out 8 batters and only allowed 4 on base in four innings.

Sunday, 5.31.15 - Angels 8, Brewers 3
 
An exceptional hitting effort by the Angels took them to an 8-3 win against the Brewers. Micah Blake came out strong against the Brewers with a triple and home run and went 3-3 in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored.Ryan Carles pitched well for the Angels.  Carles pitched four innings, struck out five, gave up just one hit, allowed one earned run. Sam Myers came in as relief pitcher for the Angels and pitched one inning and allowed one run. 

In the bottom of the third, the Brewers took an early lead, 1-0. The Brewers' rally started when Michael Pantel singled followed by Daniel Purtell stealing home. 

The Angels came back strong in the fourth, as they scored two runs on a triple by Blake, scoring Carles, and Blake scoring on an error.

The Brewers added another run to the board in the fifth to close up the Angels' lead to 3-2.  The Brewers continued to rally, but Myers ended the inning by getting a batter to fly out. 

The Angels scored an additional five runs in the sixth. The inning started with a single by Carles, and a homerun by Blake. That was followed up by a single by Alden Landis, and a single by Myers, scoring Landis, a double by Marcus Cianca, scoring Joshua Ocampo and Myers scoring the final run on a tag up. 

The Brewers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single by Tristan Kennedy fired up the Brewers' comeback. But Cianca closed the game for the Angels with no more runs scoring.  Angels win the OVLL tournament 8-3. 
 
Thursday, 5.28.15 - Angels 7, Pirates 6 
 
The Angels beat the Pirates in a battle for the tournament win, 7-6. The Angels beat the Pirates on Thursday after a back-and-forth lead change, resulting in a 7-6 win. 

The Angels took an early lead in the first inning, 2-0. They started strong with a single by Ryan Carles, a double by Micah Blake and both of them scoring on two passed balls. 

The Pirates evened up the score with a double by Quentin Custodio, single by Danny Gallardo scoring Custodio and Lucas Flynn advancing and scoring as well.

In the 3rd, Carles singled again, advanced on passed balls, and scored off a single by Blake.

The Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the 4th with back-to-back homeruns by AJ Hurtado and Evan Knipe. Angels battled back with a single by Sam Myers, scoring Joshua Ocampo followed by Jack Sles with an RBI scoring Myers.

Pirates tied the game in the 5th with a single by Christian Claypool scoring Nick Lawrence.  Pirates scored another run in the 6th with a single by Knipe scoring Nick Madole.

Marcus Cianca got it done on the mound. He pitched two-thirds of an inning of shutout ball. 

The Angels took the lead for good on a two-run walk-off home run by Blake, scoring Carles. 
 
Friday, 5.22.15 - Pirates 11, White Sox 3
 
The Pirates rattled off eight hits during a six-run first inning as they advanced in the OVLL postseason tournament, eliminating the White Sox.
 
After Quentin Custodio and Owen Wessel delivered RBI singles, Gavin Kells drove in two runs with a double down the left-field line. Lucas Flynn made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout and David Drigla singled in the Pirates' sixth run.
 The White Sox scored three times in the bottom of the first. Matthew Wilson hit a double, while Brandon Lieberman beat out an RBI single and Christopher Roberts added a sacrifice bunt to score Antonio Ventimiglia, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
 
A.J. Hurtado lined a home run to left in the second and the Pirates padded their lead with four runs in the third.
 Nick Lawrence paced the Pirates' 16-hit attack with three singles. Danny Gallardo, Drigla and Hurtado each had multi-hit games for the Pirates . Christian Claypool reached base twice, including a bunt single.
 
Pirates relief pitcher Evan Knipe struck out six batters in the final two innings.
 
Sunday, 5.17.15 – Angels 5, Pirates 4
 
The Ocean View Little League Angels advance outlasting the Pirates 5-4 in the 6th  
The Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a singles by Owen Wessell and AJ Hurtado. The Pirates added more runs in the 1st when Nick Madole scored on an RBI double by Evan Knipe, AJ Hurtado scored, and Knipe scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Kells. Hurtado pitched 5 strong innings giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run.
With a solid defense led by Joshua Ocampo, Michael Austin and Marcus Cianca, Ryan Carles took control after the 1st inning striking out 10 Pirates and giving up 6 hits over the 5 2/3 innings.
Alden Landis clutch 2-out triple tied the game in the 6th inning scoring Blake Ruitenschild and Ryan Carles. Angels took the lead for good when Joshua Ocampo singled, scoring Landis from 3rd. Sam Myers completed the comeback for the Angels on the bump allowing a ground ball to Ocampo for the final out at first. Coach Carles said “The Pirates are a tough team with strong pitchers, great hitting and a tough defense. These Angels just kept hanging in there for the right moment and capitalized when they got it.”
 
Sunday, 5.17.15 - Angels 5, Pirates 4
 
Trailing 4-2, Alden Landis hit a dramatic two-out, two-run triple and Joshua Ocampo followed with the go-ahead single in the top of the sixth to give the Angels their second straight tournament victory in their final at-bat.

The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Keith Stewart singled and moved to third on wild pitches. However, Angels reliever Sam Myers retired the final out on a grounder to short.

A day earlier, the Angels rallied from an identical 4-2 deficit, scoring six runs in the sixth to beat the Cubs, 8-5.

The Pirates opened a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by A.J. Hurtado’s RBI single and Evan Knipe’s two-run double. But Angels’ starter Ryan Carles (10 strikeouts) limited the Pirates to three hits over his final 4-2/3 innings to keep his team within striking distance.

Hurtado pitched well for the Pirates, allowing four hits and posting seven strikeouts in five innings.

Angels scored twice in the fourth to cut their deficit in half. After Carles scored on a wild pitch, Ocampo’s single drove in Micah Blake.

Owen Wessel (2-for-3) and Danny Gallardo had hits for the Pirates, while Michael Austin collected two hits for the Angels.
 
Sunday, 5.17.15 – Angels 5, Pirates 4
 
The Angels outlast the Pirates scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, 5-4. The Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Owen Wessell singled to ignite the Pirates' offense. AJ Hurtado singled, bringing home Wessell. The Pirates added more runs when Nick Madole scored on an RBI double by Evan Knipe, AJ Hurtado scored, and Knipe scored on a sacrifice fly. Alden Landis tied the game in the 6th inning, 2 outs on the board, with a triple scoring Blake Ruitenschild and Ryan Carles. Angels took the lead for good when Joshua Ocampo came to the plate and singled, scoring Landis. Ocampo went a perfect 2-2 at the plate for the Angels. Carles recorded the win for the Angels. He allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings. Carles struck out 10, walked two and gave up six hits. With the tying run on 3rd, Angels closer Sam Myers put away the final out to record the save. 
 
Saturday, 5.16.15 – Angels 8, Cubs 5

The Cubs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a solo blast by Parker Wahlpole. The Cubs pushed more runs across when Nick Shenkman scored on an RBI single by Connor McKelvey in the 3rd inning. The Angels tied the game in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-run single by Blake Ruitenshchild then extended the lead for good with a two-run double by Alden Landis scoring Ruitenschild and Micah Blake. Angels scored a total of six runs in the top of the 6th. The Cubs add 1 run in the bottom of the 6th with a solo home run by Nick Shenkman to get the Cubs within 3 runs but the Angels defense held strong. Angels need 4 pitchers(Marcus Cianca, Jack Sles, Joseph Proodian and Sam Myers) to strike out 10 batters thru 6 innings and secure the win. Angel defense was led by Michael Austin catching 2 deep fly balls in CF, holding runners to one base on hits and grabbing an over-the-shoulder catch at 2B. Coach Marcus Carles stated, “This was a good example of a team playing together and not giving up on each other thru 6 innings."

 
Saturday, 5.16.15  - Pirates 10, Nationals 0, By Daniel Lewis
 
Evan Knipe struck out 10 batters in 5-2/3 scoreless innings and Owen Wessel slugged a two-run homer in the Pirates’ opening postseason tournament victory.

The Pirates’ offense didn’t get going until the fourth inning. Quentin Custodio’s RBI groundout resulted in their first run and Gavin Kells smashed a two-run double to right field. Nick Lawrence (2-for-3, three RBI) knocked in Kells with a double to make it 4-0.

Wessel’s home run in the sixth put the game out of reach. Custodio added an RBI double, Lawrence singled in a run and Danny Gallardo delivered a two-run single to cap a six-run outburst.

Cole Kaplan, Adam Bird and Michael Rubly each had a single for the Nationals. Nick Madole and David Drigla picked up singles for the Pirates and teammate Lucas Flynn made the game’s top defensive play with an over-the-shoulder catch in right field. 
 
Saturday, 5.16.15 – Angels 8, Cubs 5
 
After five lead changes in Saturday's game, the Angels finally pulled out a 8-5 win over the Cubs. The Angels tied the game in the bottom of the 6th with a 2-run single by Blake Ruitenshchild then extended the lead for good with a two-run double by Alden Landis scoring Ruitenschild and Micah Blake. Angels pitched 4 pitchers including Joseph Proodian who got it done on the hill on the way to a win. He pitched one shutout inning. He struck out one, walked none and surrendered one hit. The Cubs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A solo blast by Parker Wahlpole started the inning off. The Cubs pushed more runs across when Nick Shenkman scored on an RBI single by Connor McKelvey in the 3rd inning then Shenkman added a Solo blast in the top of the 6th to get the Cubs within 3 runs. The Angels pull off the comeback win scoring six runs in the bottom of the 6th.   
 
Saturday, 5.9.15 - Pirates 11, Giants 4
 
A.J. Hurtado hit a grand slam and Evan Knipe blasted a two-run shot as the second-place Pirates wrapped up their regular season with a win over the first-place Giants. The game had no impact on the standings, so both teams rested their top pitchers. 

Quentin Custodio and Gavin Kells each went 2-for-3 for the Pirates (11-5). Shane Stafford delivered a pair of scorching RBI singles for the Giants (12-4), while Ethan Choi and Jack Miller each had a double.

Danny Gallardo, David Drigla, Keith Stewart, Nick Lawrence, Lucas Flynn and Quentin Custodio each pitched an inning for the Pirates. Christian Claypool, Owen Wessel and Lawrence contributed singles in the win. Aaron Palacios, Gavin Scheafer, Cade Hart, Ethan Kang and Shane Fetherston collected hits for the Giants.

Thursday, 5.7.15 - Pirates 7, Nationals 5
 
A.J. Hurtado belted a solo home run and added a two-run single as the Pirates rallied from a two-run deficit to beat the Nationals. The Pirates exploded for six runs in the third to take a 7-3 lead. David Drigla opened the inning with an opposite-field double. Following a walk and an error, Owen Wessel lined an RBI single to left and Hurtado knocked in two more runs with a long single to center field. Quentin Custodio capped the inning when he hit a high-chopper for a double, scoring Evan Knipe.

The Nationals chipped away with a run in the fourth when Tyler LaForce (2-for-2 , three RBI) doubled past third base to score Branden Dompke.  In the seventh, Cole Kaplan drove home Jake D’Amico with a two-out double to make it 7-5.  With the tying runs in scoring position, reliever Wessel retired the final batter on a popup to record the save Lucas Flynn, Christian Claypool and Nick Madole scored runs for the Pirates. The Nationals’ Jack Rockefeller had a single and scored on a wild pitch in the first. LaForce brought in two runs with a triple to right-center in the first to give the Nationals a 3-1 lead.
    
Sunday, 5.3.15 - Pirates 1, Cubs 0 (8 innings)
 
Nick Madole smashed a walkoff double to score Owen Wessel from second to give the Pirates the extra-inning victory. Starting pitcher A.J. Hurtado (5-2/3 innings) and Gavin Kells (2-1/3 innings) combined to no-hit the Cubs. Hurtado and Cubs' starter William Brooks were dominant on the mound. Hurtado struck out 12 batters before exiting a scoreless game with two outs in the sixth. Brooks didn't allow a hit and had eight strikeouts in four innings. Parker Walpole of the Cubs pitched a scoreless fifth, sixth and seventh to keep the game tied. Wessel opened the Pirates' eighth with an opposite-field double and scored when Madole's liner rolled to the fence in right-center. Until the late heroics, the Pirates had only one hit -- a single by Christian Claypool -- through seven innings. Kells struck out three batters to pick up the win in relief.

 

Sunday, 5.3.15 - Brewers 5, Royals 4

Another close game for the Royals as they played the Brewers on Sunday, May 3rd.  Brewers off to an early lead with a double from Mathew Scully.  Down 3-0, Royals did not give up as they faced the Brewers Ace pitcher Tristan Kennedy.    It was Jake Alvarez who got his bat on the ball, he went 2-2 driving in one and scored on one.  He singled in the third inning and a triple in the sixth inning pushed the Royals into the lead 4-3.  Brewers last up and again Mathew Scully brought home Luca Pantel to tie it up and Mikey Pantel brought home the winning run, Brewers 5 Royals 4.   
 
Saturday, 5.2.15 - Royals 2, Indians 1 
 
What a nail bitter Saturday, May 2nd as the Royals played the Indians.  It was a pitching battle between Royals Alec Muirhead and Indians William Ohta who kept it a tight game.  Riley Reece on base with a double scores of Daniel Kotkosky to give the Indians their only run of the game.  Royals strong defense lead by Kai Mullens, Adam Baggetta and Dylan Simonds helped keep the Indians from gaining anymore of a lead.  In the fourth inning,  AJ Valle and Samuel Mejia both singled getting one run on the scoreboard followed by an RBI from Alec Muirhead to tie it up.  Bottom of the sixth, Nick Skorheim on base makes it home from a double off AJ Valle to win the game, 2-1 Royals.

Thursday, 4.28.15 - Hooks 8, Mudcats 8

Hooks faced the Mudcats for the first time this season.  After the first inning the game was tied 2-2, but by the end of the 2nd inning, the Hooks had a 4 run lead. Tyler McCrory of the Mudcats had some great pitching at the mound in the 4th inning, but with a nice catch by Luke Alger of the Hooks, and a great slide into home by Ryan Kudulis of the Hooks, the Hooks were still holding the lead going into the 5th inning.  The Mudcats rallied back in the 5th inning to tie the game 8-8.  That tie was held for the duration of the game.

 

Thursday, 4.16.15 - Hooks 10, Sea Dogs 9

This game was a nail biter.  The starting pitchers were Nick Sanden for the Hooks, and Matthew Quach for the Sea Dogs.  Matt Haidl of the Hooks hit an in-park home run in the first inning and the game was tied 3-3 going into the 2nd inning. During the 3rd inning, Noah Kanowsky of the Hooks made a great play when he tagged out Gage Goldsmith of the Sea Dogs attempting to steal home.  After the 3rd inning the game was tied 7-7.  The Hooks got on a hot streak in the 4th inning and went up by 3 runs.  During the 5th inning the Sea Dogs were battling their way back.   They had the tying run at 1st, with 2 outs. During the next play, the runner at 1st was tagged out trying to steal 2nd base.

Wednesday, 4.29.15 - Pirates 7, Indians 4

Just when it appeared the Indians had gained the momentum in the fourth inning, Pirates relief pitcher A.J. Hurtado made sure his team's lead would not slip away.

Hurtado struck out eight batters in the final 2-2/3 innings as the Pirates held on for the 7-4 win. The Pirates carried a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth, only to see the Indians rally for three runs. Riley Reece and Jack Clark singled and Daniel Kotkosky (2-for-2) lined an RBI double to make it 6-3. Micah Kennedy added a run-scoring single with two outs, but Hurtado locked down the Indians' hitters the rest of the way. Evan Knipe (single, two runs) scored an insurance run in the fifth for the Pirates. The Pirates struck for three runs in the first. Hurtado walked with the bases loaded and Quentin Custodio drove in Owen Wessel with an opposite-field single. Nick Madole (2-for-3, two RBI) plated Keith Stewart with an RBI groundout in the second. Fleet-footed Lucas Flynn reached base twice and scored two runs for the Pirates. Tyler Bastek, Samuel Cohn and Jimmy Legg chipped in with singles for the Indians. Hurtado went 2-for-2 and Nick Lawrence added an infield single for the Pirates. final two innings to preserve the shutout. 

Saturday, 4.25.15 -  Pirates 9, Royals 1

The Pirates rattled off four straight extra-base hits during a five-run third inning to beat the Royals. Owen Wessel, Evan Knipe and A.J. Hurtado hit consecutive RBI doubles and Gavin Kells roped an opposite-field triple to break the game open. Lucas Flynn (2-for-3, double) and Nick Madole (2-for-3, double, two runs) also had big days for the Pirates. Hurtado did not allow a hit and struck out nine batters in 3-2/3 innings to get the win. The Royals' lone run came in the fourth when Nick Skorheim scored on a wild pitch. Christian Claypool's bunt single in the second resulted in the Pirates first run when Danny Gallardo raced home following an errant throw. Flynn followed with a double to bring in Claypool for a 2-0 lead. Nick Lawrence, Madole, Wessel and Hurtado picked up hits during a two-run fourth.

Thursday, 4.23.15 - Brewers 5, Pirates 0

Right-hander Luca Pantel struck out 11 batters in a dominant 4-1/3 innings as the Brewers shut down the Pirates. The Brewers got the only run they would need in the first when Tristan Kennedy singled and came around to score on a wild pitch. Daniel Purtell provided the key hit in the third with a two-run single to right field, scoring Steven Venatantis (2-for-2) and Roderick Mendenhall for a 3-0 lead. Pantel and Kennedy (five strikeouts) limited the Pirates to one hit, a Keith Stewart double in the third. 

Saturday, 4.18.15 - Pirates 10, White Sox 0

Quentin Custodio went 3-for-3 with three RBI and pitcher A.J. Hurtado struck out 10 batters in 4-1/3 innings to lift the Pirates to a shutout victory over the White Sox. The Pirates grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first on a Custodio single, a bases-loaded walk to Danny Gallardo and a Gavin Kells RBI fielder’s choice. In the third, Nick Madole (2-for-3, three runs) tripled and scored on an Owen Wessel groundout for a 4-0 lead. Custodio drove in Evan Knipe with a long single to make it 5-0. In the sixth, the Pirates tacked on five runs, including RBI singles by Knipe, Hurtado, Custodio and Nick Lawrence. Hurtado and Knipe combined for the shutout, allowing only two hits (both by the White Sox's Matthew Wilson).

Monday, 4.13.15 - Angels 7, Nationals 6

The Angels were led by a flawless day at the dish by Ryan Carles who went 2-2 against the Nationals' pitching. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the fifth inning.Cianca recorded the win for the Angels.He tossed two innings of shutout ball.He struck out one, walked none and surrendered no hits.The Nationals were led by Kaplan's strong pitching recording 6 strikeouts, 2 hits and 2 walks in 3 ? innings.The Nationals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. D'Amico singled, bringing home Kaplan. The Nationals added more runs when D'Amico scored on an RBI single by Gentilella.The Angels quickly matched the Nationals' strong inning with a five-run inning of their own in the fourth.The Angels got on the board with a two-run home run by Micah Blake followed by a key hit by Alden Landis to keep the momentum going. Angels continued pressure in the fourth with QAB's, aggressive running and hard contact to move players around at the right time. National's catcher Dompke ended the inning preserving the 4th inning lead with a strong throw to second to prevent the Angels from advancing. Blake Reutenschild led a key fifth-inning rally with 2 outs that gave the Angels the lead for good. Angels are coached by Marcus Carles, Tim Myers and Pete Cianca and were quoted as saying "These players have a lot of patience, dedication and desire to compete against these strong teams in OVLL and they will not be an easy team to beat when they come together as a team." Saturday, 4.4.15 - Cubs 4, Pirates 2

Nick Shenkman pitched effectively for five innings and scored twice to lead the Cubs past the Pirates. Shenkman helped the Cubs grab a 2-0 lead in the first when he stole third and scored on an overthrow. Parker Walpole (2-for-2) scored from first on the same play. The Cubs opened a 4-0 lead in the fourth, highlighted by a Shenkman double, a Walpole single and an RBI triple by Miles Elliot. Nick Lawrence supplied the Pirates scoring with a two-run double in the fifth. The Pirates received singles from Nick Madole, Evan Knipe, A.J. Saturday, 4.4.15 - Royals 13, Indians 2

Saturday, April 4th Royals faced the Indians for the first time this season and came away with the win.  Royals took the lead in the first inning, scoring two runs and kept the lead the remainder of the game.  Royals starting  pitcher AJ Valle had a great showing on the mound, pitching 4 innings with 8 strikeouts and no walks.  Royals were able to build on their lead in the second with a RBI double from Adam Baggetta and another run in the third from a bit hit and some great base running from Dylan Simonds.  Simonds on base from a double and steals home on a wild pitch.   Indians fight back with a hard hit single from Riley Reece, his second of the day.  Indian Jack Clark also had two solid singles but it wasn’t enough to bring them back.  Royals came to the plate swinging and again increased the lead with three more runs in the fourth driving the score up 8-2.  Royals Jacob George hit a double scoring Jake Alvarez.  George again in the sixth inning lights up the board with an RBI single followed by a two run single by Nick Skorheim.
